your personal life is defined by what you'll tolerate. Knowing your boundaries and enforcing them cuts through the shit.
Unfortunately not how it works in the real world when you have other people counting on you and are trapped by situations out of your control. You get to scramble and claw to save what you can as you watch everything you have worked for slowly get peeled away one thing at a time.
Sounds like your describing inflation, not personal relationships. If that's the case, I feel your pain.
There's a term called "frame". Either you're operating within someone else's frame, or your own frame. Operating within your own frame is "put your own mask on first, then help your neighbor". Seems subtle. I was guilty of setting myself on fire to keep others warm for too long. In recent years I've switched to operating in my own frame. Life is better, even if external forces are eroding my empire.
While it sucks, sometimes you need to purge peeps from your life.

Learning to say no is a skill and great way to weed out true friends from opportunists.
At a base level all relationships are transactional, the transaction could be as simple as an emotional bond (friendship). Learning to say no might shift an opportunist to friend. A child will forever ask for a cookie without doing their chores, but still worth keeping in your life.
A great book to learn this valuable skill is "When I Say No I Feel Guilty" by Manuel Smith. Learning to defend from manipulation (learning to diplomatically say no) is a key life skill. Learning to assist people in communicating with you is a key life skill.
I started saying no years ago. The result ended up being. I have no friends left. Every friend I had always wanted something but was never there when I needed something. When I stared saying no. I became the asshole who never wanted to help.
Current situation is different. Saying no and walking away is not an option.
can’t recommend WISNIFG strongly enough.
Recently I was asked to paint a vintage motorcycle A Triumph. And because its a motorcycle and not as big as a car the consensus is to do it dirt cheap as I usually do for friends. I wanted to say no, but its a friend. When the conversation led to how much? This time I simple asked for a favour in return. Haven't heard from him since. That was in December.
you got two answers for the price of one
Just finished waterblowing (it wasn’t really snow) two and a half driveways. Then off to the lab for some blood work. The lab opened at 8:00, I got here at 8:10 and there were 13 people ahead of me.
Not bad for walk-in.
Clinic I go to, all but melt down at you if arriving without an appointment. Arrive later in the day and your turned around.
Patiently waiting for speed therapy to post their 2024 CTMP track day schedule.
^ + 1 on above.
Sean Strickland interviews are gold
CEBA deadline is here. Repayment starts. And Trudeau’s answer if you can’t repay is to go to the loan sharks that he has given power back to.
Watch the small businesses continue to fall.

For people curious. Our personal experience.
Been 6 months waiting on an answer from the banks. The ones that did get back said no.
The “other non bank lenders” that Trudeau is pushing said yes. But wanted a one year payback at 18% interest. With fees ect. It was like $2000 per week they wanted and if you signed and defaulted they owned everything. The contract they wanted signed gave them rights to everything business and personal now owned and future owned and even listed chattels, books, ect ect.
They don’t want small businesses anymore.
I worked with Sports Illustrated years ago, even back then they made corporate drone decisions but they really rode that horse to collapse.
Officially a land lord of sorts.
Rented out half my shop today. Take that mortgage payment.
In college I had a great apartment close to school, low rent but 2 bedroom. My original roomate was a Christmas grad, flunked out after too much partying on student grants. I put up an ad for a new roomate and got quite an assortment. One was a girl who ws 7 month pregnant. "It won't be a problem".
In the end none of the circus were good bets. I was leaning on the bar in the student lounge having a beer and going through the mental checklist of moving out, head held low. Beside me was a guy also moping. We struck up a convo. He had been living in his car for a couple of weeks looking for a place. We were roomates for the next 2 years, the guy was hilarious and paid on time.
Saga involved in buying a shifter ball.
Ordered a weighted shifter ball for my silver car, finally arrived after being lost in Canada Post hell only to open the box and find it's the wrong one (totally different shape / model). Call em, no problem will ship new one as warranty replacement with no value and further agree to cover shipping cost to return. I'm good, thanks for looking after things so quickly and with no hassle. Second one arrived with no shipping delay but paperwork not filled out properly and cost me taxes. Ok lil annoyed but hey is what it is, at least it's finally here. Open the box to find, sent the same one they sent the first time. For fuck sakes guys, model is clearly printed on the outside of the box.
Waiting to hear back. :(

Assume all lawyers are puppets and you'll be right more often than wrong.
Expand that further to "expect all people to act in their own best interests"
Meaning puppets to money or other incentives rather than altruism or benevolence.
If humans didn't act in this manner we'd be extinct, a feature not a bug and also the basis for a predictive framework.
