Just got back from driving a GMC Canyon.
Worst, truck, ever! Feels like it's about to collapse into a pile of scrap.
A new one or last gen?
Same question here. Drove a new one recently, while it's not the rock solid truck my fullsize Sierra is, came away pleasantly impressed how it drove n felt. Have been told there is a huge difference between standard and premium shock package (as you would expect). Truck like mine without the Rancho option feels spongy / sloppy compared to my own with em.

Back yard pic!
Older gen.
Even still though. It's a complete piece of shit. Michaela and her mom each got their "trucks" at the same time. Both have similar mileage. The GM has gone through multiple sets of brakes. Tranny rebuilt. Tranny replaced. The HVAC system is shot and only works on high speed. The passenger window doesn't work. The passenger door almost fell off. The seats feel like they're full of baseballs. It's gone through three starters and batteries. Wheel bearings and ball joints replaced twice. Electrical gremlins galore. Driving it down the road is just terrifying. Shakes rattles and skips all over the place. It feels like it's gonna fall apart. And the CEL is on for god knows what.
Now Michaela's Toyota isn't free and clear either. It's had One brake job done by Rick. One battery (changed by me) and the ball joints/control arms replaced also by Rick.
Michaela begged her mom to get a Tacoma but she didn't listen.
After my experience with my Focus and Mustangs I can honestly say my next vehicle will most likely be an import. I just don't trust domestic manufacturers at the moment. Might get a Tacoma or Tundra. Giving their PROVEN durability.
Older gen, while most don't see the level of problems you've described, they are a mediocre design / somewhat cheapie built truck.
My dad has had his 07 canyon for 7 years now.. not one problem with it to date,160k kms. For what it is.. it's a great little truck. It works 5 days a week too.
Couldn't be happier with my ram.
