Was funny, they were talking about this on the radio this evening, and the radio hosts had no idea how to check for "proper torque". They were talking about how the tire "monitors" should check for that :facepalm:

When torquing your wheels, first nut or even two should be taken well beyond snug but not to full torque. What happens if you don't, odd time you'll actually jam the wheel / rotor (if it's slip on style) a hair sideways giving you a false full torque reading. A short distance down the road, wheel centers and your left with loose wheel nuts.

Many dealers are covering their azzez now and putting that sticker on 100km come back for a retorq. 50% of the customers dont seems to bother coming back

The driver must have known something wasn't right. They had their hazard lights on before the wheel let go. Bolts came loose followed by front end vibration then...

depends on what is being tightened. refer to your owners manual. make sure your torque wrench is reading lb-ft and not lb-in. made that mistake before and kept waiting for the click. the only click i heard was the bolt snapping. LOL.
now i only use n-m. much harder to screw up.

My suggestion, 90-95lb max, recheck after a few days with wheels cold.

I put winter rims on my father in laws SUV for him. The nuts on the wheels were so tight I had the peek the compressor out at 130psI to get the impact to crack them loose. It's was crazy. Told him to give the chev dealer shit cuz they had cracked the chrome casing on all the nuts. Cars only 2 years old.

Chordless impact gun with 800 ft lbs torque. Crank the nuts on and rattle for a good 30 seconds each lug.

That won't cut it on an f150. The spec is 150ft/lbs. Must be a little Porsche in f150's

In August a guy on Kennedy Rd in Brampton lost a wheel from his Toyota van, it rolled 300 feet and found the front of my 1990 Nissan 300 ZX.

Can you imagine if someone was walking along and got hit by this run away wheel!

Some years back, younger sister was hit by wheels off the rear of a transport trk. The full size 70's Pontiac Parisienne she was driving, front end and roof unrecognizable it was so badly mangled plus car shoved some distance off the road.

I've come across so many loose wheels now that when I road test and hear the noise I already know what it is. There's no mistaking something is wrong and people just keep driving .
Most cars use 12mm/1/2 nuts I tighten to 100 ft lbs
Trucks 14mm / 9/16 140 ft lbs

I like to torque my wheel nuts to about 105lbs to seat the wheels then back each one off and retorque to 90ft/lbs as per Manu/spec

I remember that, could happen to anyone.

Well, it happened: a few weeks ago, took the stang out to wing night for her maiden voyage of the year. On the way home, heard something wasn’t quite right in the front end. Sounded like a loose wheel. I thought maybe after many track days the front hubs had finally pooched. Put the car away on the lift and didn’t get around to checking it until today. Sure enough, it was the front left wheel coming off. Simple fix, but could have been WAY WORSE! Fortunately, doesn’t look like it was loose enough to damage the wheel or the studs.

Check your lug nuts!

Seen four wheel offs in the last two weeks on highway 10 - the one this morning (Civic) also damaged his left front fender. All the recent wheel offs I've seen where left front on front wheel drive. The left side is most likely to come off because the wheel spins counter clockwise in forward as does the wheel nut. To make 100 pounds by hand is easy to trust a torque wrench Meh! Take the car for a very short spin around the block and recheck them. Especially left front on front wheel drive and the left rear on rear wheel drive. In the old days Mopars had left hand thread on the left side, maybe that needs to happen again.
