Went to Michigan this weekend. First time at a race beyond a few trips to see dirt track sprint races or drags where friends were involved. Weather didn't cooperate too much but it was a fun experience, and most importantly my father in law was thrilled. Also, standing by the wall having them go past makes you realize just how quickly they are moving. Don't get me wrong, I knew they were fast, but seeing/hearing/feeling them blow past makes you realize just how fast.

I was also really impressed at how well it was run and how easy it was to get in and out.

Now would I go again? I wouldn't say no, but I also don't think I would go out of my way unless it was to Bristol or maybe Watkins Glen.

Yeah, pretty cool when the pack goes past you at speed. They don't bunch up as much at MIS as with Daytona or Talladega but that wall of wind and sound they're pushing as they go by is awesome (plus the shower of tire rubber/dust).

What time did the race finish? My PVR missed most of it due to the late rain start.

Just after 6:30. It only went 132 laps when the rain started again. We (along with almost everyone else) left before it was officially called complete. Figured that it was long enough to be official and with how long it would take to dry the track there was no chance they would get racing again.

Matt Kenseth has added 10 races to his 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule for Roush Fenway Racing, the organization announced on Wednesday.
Kenseth will pilot the No. 6 Ford for a four-week stretch that includes Kentucky (July 14), New Hampshire (July 22), Pocono, (July 29) and Watkins Glen (Aug. 5). He will also be behind the wheel for Darlington (Sept. 2), the regular-season finale at Indianapolis (Sept. 9) as well as the playoff races at Dover (Oct. 7), Martinsville (Oct. 28), Phoenix (Nov. 11) and Homestead-Miami (No. 18). The team release notes that additional races for the 2003 champion “are still under consideration.”

SPEEDWAY, Ind. — Dale Earnhardt Jr. has spent this season working in the broadcast booth for the first time in his career, but he will make another “first” in two weeks at Richmond Raceway. Although he has retired from full-time racing, he will make a one-race start in a JR Motorsports Chevrolet in the Sept. 21 Xfinity Series race at the track.
It will be his first NASCAR start since he climbed out of his Hendrick Motorsports No. 88 after the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season finale in Homestead, Florida, last November — and it might just be his last, he hinted.

“I’m looking forward to it,’’ Earnhardt said of his Xfinity Series debut this season. “I didn’t miss racing at the start of the year at all. I didn’t miss driving much. When I got back to the broadcasting and started to really plug into what the races were like and what was going on, you see moments in the races that make you wish you were out there doing that. And so, I started to miss it a little bit.
“I like Richmond as a track. And it’s a pretty straightforward little race track. We have had success there. I’m not really putting any expectations or pressure on myself as far as performance. I just want to go run and have fun.”
And, Earnhardt said, it just may be the last time he enters a major NASCAR race.
“It’s the only time I’m going to race a car this year. And it may be the last time I race a car,’’ he said.
“I really don’t know what our plans are going forward. I don’t really have any initiative to drive a ton of races. So, we’ll just kind of see what kind of opportunities there are down the road with the sponsorships and so forth that help the rest of the company. But, hopefully I get to run all the laps and just enjoy driving the car.
“The only reason you get behind the wheel of a race car is because it’s fun and you enjoy the competition. Hopefully those are things that I get out of it and try not to get real competitive about it. I don’t want to sweat over every lap and how fast we are in practice and all those things, and make it a miserable experience because most race car drivers tend to do that if you’re not careful.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s lone scheduled race of the season — a one-off Xfinity Series effort — was intended to be a flashback, a low-pressure return to NASCAR competition after his retirement from full-time racing last season. It was also intended to be enjoyable, a goal that Earnhardt reiterated in a pace-lap radio communication to his pit crew: “Let’s have some fun, man.”
After 250 laps Friday night at Richmond Raceway, the fun factor was a turning-back of the clock to long-ago days, a rekindling of memories planted nearly two decades earlier to the last time he’d enjoyed racing this much.
“When I was racing Late Models in the ’90s, probably,” Earnhardt said. “I had a lot of fun in the late ’90s running the Xfinity Series, but I didn’t know I was having fun. I didn’t know how good I had it.”

Earnhardt had a sense of how good things could be by exceeding his own expectations in Friday night’s Federated Auto Parts 250, where he led a race-high 96 laps before slipping to a fourth-place finish. The longtime fan favorite soaked in adoring cheers, spent time with his growing family and accepted well-wishes from many of his peers after the event.
It was an overflow of emotions for Earnhardt, who qualified second in a patchwork fifth JR Motorsports entry, then used a veteran’s poise to conserve his equipment and rise to the lead near the race’s midpoint. He picked up his first-ever stage victory and stayed solidly in contention, building a striking sense of anticipation that his one-race return could be a winner.
The apprehension wasn’t just the crowd’s. It was Earnhardt’s, too.
“I tried to come in here and just think, man, I really just want to have fun, I want to race, I want to do everything I’ve got to do,” he said. “Right around three-quarters of the way through that race, I’m like, man, if I don’t win, now I’m going to be disappointed. I done backed myself into a corner with my expectations getting so high. It’s easy to be disappointed that we didn’t win because we should (have).”
Those prospects held firm until Earnhardt’s No. 88 Chevrolet lost the race off pit road in the next-to-last caution period and faded with tire spin on a sprinkling of late restarts. Still, if there was any rust in his first race since last November, it barely showed.

“If you think about it, when a guy steps out of, say a baseball player no matter what level takes months and months off and get back out there, they don’t just start and pick up right where they left off,” Earnhardt said. “The sport is elite, the drivers are elite and this ain’t a hobby. These guys are the best. Some of these guys in this field will be winning Cup races and championships one day. … You just can’t assume you’re going to miss eight months or 10 months and come right in here and win, much less run in the top five. My expectations were just to kind of be in the top 10.”
Though his competitive juices got going once the field went green, Earnhardt was loose in pre-race ceremonies, conversing with his wife, Amy, and doting on his 4-month-old daughter, Isla Rose. Two fans pierced the intimate family moment, yelling out “Slide job!” in a nod to the TV call that resonated in Earnhardt’s debut as a broadcaster for NBC Sports. Earnhardt made eye contact and grinned.
He’ll resume his primary duties from the television booth starting Saturday evening at Richmond. But for one night at least, the 43-year-old driver was rejuvenated, having the same sort of adventure as a kid trying to scratch out a career at dimly lit short tracks with his Late Model crew.
This time, though, he got to spend it with his wife and daughter, coming oh-so-close to creating scrapbook memories in Victory Lane.
“She obviously won’t remember this, but she’ll have the photographs and all that stuff,” Earnhardt said of his infant daughter. “I don’t know what she’ll think about my racing career and how that’ll register with her since she won’t get to experience any of it, but we got to have one race together and Amy wouldn’t miss it. Isla’s here. It was a pretty important moment for me, personally.”

After last week’s close call at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course, Jimmie Johnson was a logical choice to contend for a victory at Dover International Speedway, where he has accumulated 11 of his 83 career victories.
But when the green flag waved at the Monster Mile, Johnson’s No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet wasn’t even on the track.

With what was eventually diagnosed as a lower ball joint failure, Johnson took his car to the garage for repairs and didn’t reappear on the concrete until the Gander Outdoors 400 was 10 laps old. After a subsequent pit road penalty, he finished 36th, 17 laps down.
The mechanical failure was a continuation of the ill fortune the seven-time champion had suffered at Charlotte, where his attempted pass of martin Truex Jr. on the last lap ended in an accident that knocked Johnson out of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs on a tiebreaker.

My brother and I loved it. They make it easy to get around some of the track with golf carts giving free rides. I liked being able to go into the "garage" area for the Pinty's series cars...we were watching an engine replacement in one of the cars! It was my first NASCAR event and my second visit to ctmp....first visit was 45 years ago when it was called Mosport.

I'm guessing that Logano will be remembered as the most unpopular champion in NASCAR history. This stupid CHASE format just goes to show how a guy who wasn't a factor all season ends up winning the big prize. So undeserving. The 3 guys who finished behind him accounted for more than half the race wins all season long. Oh well, I don't think I watched a race all season and I don't see that changing in the future.

LAS VEGAS – It was hardly a surprise to hear Chase Elliott’s name called as the 2018 Most Popular Driver during the NASCAR Champion’s Week banquet in Las Vegas.
Elliott’s fellow drivers joked about it throughout the week, many of them already predicting Elliott to win it long before his name was called. Kyle Busch even clowned with Elliott during his media obligations offstage.
“When all your peers answer the interview as if you’ve already won, it kind of makes it odd,” Elliott said with a smile. “… It’s a great honor to have.”

NASCAR competition officials announced Monday that post-race inspection for all three national series will have a new model for 2019, introducing a system where race-winning teams found in violation of the rule book would be disqualified.
The rules change signals a shift in a long-standing tradition of penalizing an offending race winner with fines, suspensions and/or points deductions, but allowing victories to stand. The new system also accelerates the timetable for thorough post-race technical inspections, which will now be conducted at the track soon after the checkered flag instead of midweek at the NASCAR Research & Development Center in Concord, North Carolina.
“I think for us, we’re really looking at a total culture change,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer. “We’ve been through a deterrence model where we’ve really worked with the race teams at the track and probably been more lenient than we should in terms of the number of times teams can go through inspection and pass, fail and there’s almost incentive to try to get something by NASCAR, so we want to really reverse that trend.
“We’re going to put it on the teams to bring their equipment right. When they come to the track, we’ll be much less lenient as they go through technical inspection with stiffer penalties in terms of qualifying, and then ultimately during the race, obviously we want everyone to be racing straight up.”

The cars of the first-place and second-place finishers, plus at least one randomly selected car, will undergo post-race inspection at the track. Competition officials said they are targeting a time frame of approximately 90 minutes to two hours to complete the inspection and confirm the race winner.
Should one of those cars fail the post-race inspection, the driver and team would receive last-place points and the rest of the finishing order would move up. Disqualified teams also would be stripped of the benefits of playoff points, stage points and automatic postseason berths and playoff advancement.
The shift in rules marks a distinct break from a longstanding, unwritten company policy. Series organizers have avoided taking wins away for decades, adhering to a belief that fans should leave the race track with an assurance that the first finisher was indeed the winner.
Current-day officials acknowledged that break in tradition, saying that a goal of the new procedures was to accelerate the inspection process and avoid the potential pall that midweek penalties can cast over both the previous week’s result and the following week’s race.

This is a good and a bad thing. I always thought that a cheater shouldn't keep the win. It's almost worth cheating to score a win and the headlines. On the other hand we will now have confusion over who actually won the race. The winner at the track may not be the winner 2 hrs later. Then 2 weeks later after the appeals process the winner might revert bak to the guy who won at the track. Even worse what if first and second both fail post race inspection. Then 3rd wins and then during appeals the win is given back to the original 1st or 2nd place driver. No wonder nascar doesn't have any fans in the seats anymore. They have let this stuff become a monster and changing it isn't going to help fan support. It will be amusing to hear that Jimmie Johnson or Logano got booted though..

Of course I won't be affected by this rule change because I will not watch any racing series that has a moron like Logano as the champion.

Darrell Waltrip, who brought his folksy, outsized personality from the driver’s seat to a prodigious second career as a broadcaster, announced Thursday that this season will be his last for FOX Sports.
Waltrip’s final NASCAR race from the broadcast booth is scheduled for June 23 at Sonoma Raceway. The news, later confirmed by the network, was first reported by The (Nashville) Tennessean.

Just watched a video from after the race. Newman is right, Bowyer should be embarrassed. Bowyer said he thought Newman was a lap down and didn't know why he was running four wide on the last lap. It's because he wasn't down a lap was trying to win the flipping race. Then after Newman gets out of his car, without his helmet on, he confronts Bowyer who still has his on. Also, watch the NASCAR official, he steps in an all his attention is on Newman. Bowyer owes that guy a beer for keeping Newman from beating the crap out of him. On top of all this, Bowyer spun himself out when he moved down on Newman.

Ford Service Engineering Operations (Ford SEO), in partnership with Ford Motorcraft, honored Automotive Service Technicians who maintained Senior Master status for 20 years as part of a major initiative to help promote the automotive technician career field by rewarding the hard work of those excelling in the field.

The 20-year Senior Master Technicians were honored by having their names on the sides of the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Mustang driven by Paul Menard. To become a Ford Senior Master Tech, technicians complete 15 classroom courses, 57 online classes and must have five years of service at a Ford or Lincoln dealership. To maintain their Senior Master status, these technicians took required training and two electives per year, for the last 20 years.

It still baffles me that he survived that wreck, when the one that killed him looked comparatively minor.

I know even if he were still alive, he'd be long since retired but I still miss seeing him race. The one thing I wonder is, how many more races would he have won, would he have finally broke through for his 8th championship? I mean before the wreck in '96, he was leading the points and he even finished second to Labonte in 2000. I guess we shall never know.

Watched the F1 race today ( Hamilton 6 time world champion) record crowds for the F1 race in the US.
Switched over to the NASCAR race and couldn’t believe how empty the stands were.

It's all about the diversity for Nascar. They can't be seen as being "racist" for fining their new Drive for Diversity poster child. I think they only did something because of the backlash this time.

Nascar needs to have alot more crap happening to grab headlines because in a couple more years there wont be a nascar. I personally have not watched a race this year (I think). I did watch the last 8 laps of the race today. Mostly because it was only 8 laps to go and I had no idea this was the second last race. I didn't even realize it was on. Just channel flipping. I will not watch homestead either. Maybe I'll check youtube for headlines.

I probably won’t watch the final race of the season, not that I watched many races at all this year. I don’t like any of the final four and for the most part don’t like much about the product NASCAR has been providing the last several years.

I used to make a point of at least trying to watch the two road course races in the regular season, but missed those and the roval race this year. Oh well, I'll just go back to watching races from the 80s and early 90s on YouTube! LOL

I honestly think this season, in terms of actual heads up racing, has been the best in recent years. Take the last Talladega race... it was full on non stop action the whole race. They were 2-4wide the whole race. Was amazing.
Yes yesterday's race was a let down in terms of excitement... only 8cars on the lead lap for the final restart... but I personally think Nascar is going in the right direction in terms of making the racing closer and more enjoyable to watch.
Also a side note, the Texas race was a total let down in terms of support at the track (dont have two race events in the same State on the same day)... but this past race, the fans were PACKED in the stands.

If they are going to grab more attention moving forward... they need to cut down the length of the races. No one wants to watch them do 600miles at the Coca Cola 600... aka a 4-6hr race depending on cautions.
The other thing Nascar HAS to do, is stop fucking with races. The amount of times a BS caution comes out is outrageous. There is ZERO consistency in caution calls.... and it drives me nuts.
Lastly... I think the commercials during the race need to be cut down. There have been multiple times this season where it's like 40 to go in a stage... someone just catches the leader... and they go to commercial... get back from commercial and have to show a replay of it... fail. Other sports don't cut away to a commercial half way through a hockey period or half way through a inning during a baseball game.

Rick, I think NASCAR just told all the other drivers to stay the hell out of the way and let the final 4 battle it out. They were all basically driving around as field fillers. Seemed almost rigged to me that the 4 contenders were basically in the top 5 all race long. Oh well, Busch won and extends his legacy as the top racer of all time.

Watched it till a couple of years ago... 15 years prior to that... went to 1 or 2 races a year. Jr retired, was only interest I had left in the sport. Turn to your Dad... probably has same opinion. So yes... I used to watch till I had no interest left.
