Dale Earnhardt Jr. (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/dale-earnhardt-jr.html)said problems with balance and nausea prevented him from driving in Sunday's New Hampshire 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, and he is encouraged by concussion test results that match his baseline test.

ZR

This situation has left Dale Jr. fans and his team worried, seeing that simply by Junior missing the race in New Hampshire he dropped from No. 16 to No. 18 in the polls. Now Dale Jr. is finally telling us the reasons why he had to visit the neurologist.

“I’ve struggled with my balance over the last four or five days. I definitely wouldn’t be able to drive a race car this weekend (in New Hampshire) … I made the decision that I had to make. I’m going to continue to work with my doctors to understand more about the injury and how to treat it. They can give me a lot exercises that will retrain my brain to handle what I need to handle.”
Even though it’s a tough thing for Dale, he is completely confident in the doctor’s advice and orders. His health comes first. That is something we can’t help but respect.

“It’s just going to take a lot of patience. I put my health and quality of life as a top priority, and I’ll always do that. So, I’m going to take this slow and strictly follow the advice of my doctors and try to learn as much as I can to be smarter and be wiser.”
While this has been unfolding, Dale Jr.’s fans, friends and family have supported him completely. That’s something that’s really special about having such a large fanbase. Dale Jr. is the most loved driver in NASCAR after all!
While speaking out, he mentioned just how grateful and honored he was to get so much support from so many people.

“I really appreciate all the support that I’ve got. It’s really unnecessary but really does make me feel good, I have to be honest. To hear everybody wishing me well, really, really does my heart good. This kind of thing can beat you down and get you sad, but I’ve got a lot of good people around, lot of people supporting me, so I hope we can get back to the track soon.”
Junior then informed us all that his brain feels sharp and ready to obtain whatever needs to be obtained, which gives everyone hope that he could recover before Indy.

“My mind feels real sharp. I took the ImPACT test, which measures thought process and the speed of your thought process, memory and retaining memory, and my results matched my baseline, which made me feel confident that my brain was pretty sharp.”
If he feels confident, so do we. There are reports that say we will hear the final verdict about Dale Jr.’s fate this upcoming weekend on either Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. Until then we will all be praying for good results from Dale Jr.’s latest tests!!!

NASCAR levied penalties to the race-winning Joe Gibbs Racing No. 20 Toyota team Wednesday after last weekend's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

As a result of infractions found in a post-race pass through the laser inspection station (LIS), the No. 20 team was docked 15 championship points in the team owner standings and driver Matt Kenseth (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/matt-kenseth.html)absorbed a 15-point deduction in the Sprint Cup drivers' standings. The points penalty moved Kenseth, a two-time winner this year, from eighth to ninth place in the standings.

The P3-grade penalty also carries a $25,000 fine for No. 20 crew chief Jason Ratcliff.

The No. 20 Toyota driven to victory by Kenseth in the New Hampshire 301 was found out of compliance during Sunday's post-race trip through the LIS platform. The car was sent to the NASCAR Research & Development Center in Concord, North Carolina, for further evaluation this week.

Points penalties are a joke, makes zero difference to Kenseth or Gibbs. $25,000 is no incentive to not cheat either. Nascar is a joke. I'm a Kenseth fan too.

No determination has been made concerning Earnhardt's return to competition.

At Indianapolis Motor Speedway, team owner Rick Hendrick said an appearance at the team's headquarters in Concord, North Carolina, earlier this week by his driver was a good sign.

"Wednesday he came by the shop, and we got to visit," Hendrick said. "He looks good; he is encouraged. … We're really excited. He is in great spirits."

Hendrick, whose HMS organization fields entries for drivers Jimmie Johnson (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/jimmie-johnson.html), Chase Elliott (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/chase-elliott.html)and Kasey Kahne (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/kasey-kahne.html)in addition to Earnhardt Jr., said Earnhardt is eager to get back in the car, but is also following doctors' orders.

"He wants to race," Hendrick said, "but he also knows the regime they have him on will get him right for a long time. He's following doctors' orders but I can tell he is getting antsy. But he is going to do what they say."

Jeff seems to be getting comfy in the 88 for todays race, hope he remembers it's the 88 not the 24 pit stall. :)

Jeff Gordon (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/jeff-gordon.html)was all smiles walking on Indianapolis Motor Speedway's pit road following qualifying for Sunday's Brickyard 400. The crowd cheered its approval of his 21st-place qualifying effort. Mostly they were happy for the opportunity to see the four-time NASCAR champion at work again.

Gordon advanced to the second round of qualifying driving Dale Earnhardt Jr. (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/dale-earnhardt-jr.html)'s No. 88 Axalta Chevrolet. And the five-time Indy winner will start his final race here from the 11th row filling in for Earnhardt, who is recovering from concussion-like symptoms.

"I felt really comfortable right there," said Gordon, 44, who was asked by team owner Rick Hendrick to come out of retirement and take the wheel for Earnhardt at Indy and at Pocono Raceway next week.

"I feel like today I am much calmer than I was yesterday," Gordon said. "Usually my heart's beating more for qualifying than for practice, but that wasn't the case today.

"So today, I feel more relaxed and comfortable in the car and I hope to feel the same way tomorrow. Tomorrow's challenge is going to be being around traffic and trying to get the balance of the car right and do that when you're by yourself as well as around other cars."

Gordon hasn't driven a Sprint Cup Series car since retiring at the end of the 2015 season and only had a pair of practice sessions Friday to prepare for qualifying and the race.

The team used his old seat and steering wheel in the car and Gordon only arrived from a family vacation in France mid-week.

"For the most part, all the work is done," Gordon said. "We did our practice yesterday, we did our de-brief with drivers and crew chiefs last night and we qualified today.

"Every time we're on track we're gathering information and learning. We'll continue to talk about it, but that's about all we can do moving forward. Those guys will be working hard on pit strategy for the race. But for the most part, the work is done for me other than thinking of some things I could tell Greg.

"The work all begins when the green flag drops."

While this will be the first time in Gordon's celebrated career he won't be steering the No. 24 Chevrolet for Hendrick, there was an unmistakable sense of excitement about the weekend's opportunity.

In what was originally his final Indy start -- last year -- Gordon scored his worst-ever finish of 42nd. In a sense, this time filling in for his good friend and former teammate Earnhardt also affords him the chance to improve that career note, too.

"My expectations are very realistic," Gordon said. "I'm approaching this the same way I've approached any race I've ever been in. I drive the car into the corner and the car gives me feedback and if it feels good, I drive it harder. If it doesn't feel good I find a way to manage it until we can make adjustments.

"My goal is to make the car go as fast as it can go. Each time on track I feel like I'm getting better. This is a steep learning curve, to be off the track this long and then just jump in here. But luckily, I have a great race car and a great race team that's going to help me get through it."

They did say on Nascar radio that in every Brickyard 400 the stands look empty. You have to remember that the stands at Indy hold 235,000 people with an extra 165,000 that can be put on the infield seats so a crowd of even 60,000 will seem sparse at best. I agree that nascar popularity is declining rapidly. The races are far too long. The prices are far too high. The F1 race this morning was much better than the Nascar race. I actually watched the whole race today. It was god awful boring. I needed recovery time after a full day at the water park yesterday. lol

The figure given in this article is a lot less. More like 50k, if that's true, maybe Nascar should take then hint. The racing is at Indy terrible, and it has been for a very long time. Of course Nascar thinks more rules changes are going to fix the problem, which is their answer for everything. Why not just acknowledge the fact that the cars aren't suited for the track, and drop the damn race?

NASCAR would like to see better attendance, racing at IMS: NASCAR's Steve O'Donnell said Monday on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio that series officials would like to "see more fans in the stands" at Indianapolis Motor Speedway but stated that "we've got to put on the racing people want to see." Kyle Busch dominated Sunday's Brickyard 400, leading 149 of 170 laps. That came a day after he won the Xfinity race there, leading all 20 laps in his heat and 62 of the 63 laps in the main event. While attendance figures are not announced, The Indianapolis Star reported that Sunday's crowd "might not have topped 50,000" at a track that has more than 250,000 permanent seats. On the crowd, O'Donnell said: "Certainly we would like to see more fans in the stands. It's been a struggle over the last couple of years for sure. We put a little bit on that ourselves when we had the tire issue (in 2008 where tire issues prevented any green flag stretch longer than 13 laps).
"It's a challenging race track for us from a racing perspective. That's no secret. So, we've got to balance the ability to race at that speedway but also put on a good race and balance that with the attendance. That's an ongoing thing. We're in discussions with Doug Boles (track president) and Mark Miles (CEO of Hulman & Company), and I know from their perspective as well, they certainly want to see folks in the stands, as do we. It's an important market for us, but by the same token we've got to put on the racing that people want to see. It's a balance, but we've got to make sure when we go there it's the best of all worlds and this year was a challenge, and we want to see that turn and reverse."
O'Donnell said that more can be done with the racing at Indianapolis: "Maybe the cars were a little bit closer together from a 1-40 standpoint, but obviously the ability to pass was a challenge, especially at the front. We'll go back and look at what levers we can pull. We're still evaluating 2017 (rules package), continuing on the lower (aero) trend and working with Goodyear on the tire. It's just a real challenge in terms of the groove in the corners at Indy. It's something we've got to continue to look at and see if we can, if at all, open up the ability to draft more and increase those passing zones.

A date has not been announced for Earnhardt's return, but Junior, who says he has been doing physical and mental exercises for two-and-a-half hours each day, promised an update next Monday following his doctor's visit.

"I'm going for another evaluation here soon to see what kind of gains we've made, get in front of my doctors, let them get a good look at me and let them tell me where they think I'm at," Earnhardt said.

"And that will help us make the decision on what we're going to do for Watkins Glen."

Talk about bad timing, was in the top 10 n poised for a really decent finish when he realized the belts had come loose.

Gordon was subbing for a sidelined Dale Earnhardt Jr. in this race, his second consecutive week filling in.
On a Lap 110 restart, Gordon was running inside the top ten, but suddenly dropped to the inside and rapidly fell back before Turn 1.
He initially told the team he would have to pit, but managed to buckle his belts on his own, radioing "We're good, I got it" and continuing on.
“Yeah, it’s the first time I’ve ever had that happen with this type of mechanism where you just plug it in and it latches. I’ve had it happen under the old system with the old buckle. I was actually at Sonoma one time leading the race and we went right off the next corner when it happened. I was able to get that one latched.
The issue first popped up on pit road, but returned on the restart and the veteran driver made a veteran decision to pull out.
"I thought I had it latched because it happened actually on pit road one time. And I got it latched and lost some time. And then we were in a pretty good position on the restart and went to take off and as soon as I went into second and third, just that little bit of a side movement just pulled it out. It would go in and sort of latch, but when you wiggled it from left to right, it would pop right out. So, I don’t know if there is something lodged in there, or what happened or why it took so long for that to play out.
"But I knew I couldn’t go down into Turn 1 on these crazy restarts without a right-side seat belt. So, I came in under that stop. We worked on it and now it’s good. I have no clue. It’s unfortunate. The No. 88 Nationwide Chevrolet is pretty good. We just need track position. We finally got it and I’ve been having some decent restarts and things were going good. I hate that that happened.”

Perfect example is Dale Sr, and Ken Schrader. They both had similar accidents, Schrader is still here and Dale Sr is gone.

Or a better example. Dale Sr's horrific wreck at Talladega in '96, that he walked away from. Even though he was injured, he still walked away and even set the track record at Watkins Glen.

Jeff Gordon will be behind the wheel of the No. 88 Chevrolet for the next two races as Dale Earnhardt Jr. continues to recover from concussion-like symptoms, Hendrick Motorsports announced Tuesday.

Earnhardt Jr. underwent further evaluation Tuesday at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Sports Medicine Concussion Program, according to the team.

"We have a break in the schedule after Watkins Glen, so the extra week of recovery time will certainly be a benefit," team owner Rick Hendrick said in a press release. "Dale will be back when he's ready, and we're looking forward to that happening, but the priority continues to be his health and well-being. We'll keep our focus on that and let the doctors guide us."

RELATED: Read more about Junior's recovery here (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/articles/2016/8/1/dale-earnhardt-jr-concussion-update-jeff-gordon.html)

Gordon will drive the No. 88 Chevrolet when the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series comes to Watkins Glen International for the Cheez-It 355 at The Glen this weekend (Sunday, 2:30 p.m. ET, USA, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). Watkins Glen will be his 800th career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start.

Following an off week, Gordon will then pilot the No. 88 at Bristol in the annual night race.

Watkins Glen and Bristol are the fourth and fifth races, respectively, that Earnhardt Jr. will miss due to concussion-like symptoms. Junior opened up about his recovery, the process, protocol and much more on this week's edition of "The Dale Jr. Download."

Last weekend at Pocono Raceway, Gordon indicated he looked at his stint in the No. 88 "as a very temporary thing" but is willing to remain in the role "as long as they need me."

The four-time series champion later added: "I wouldn't be here in Pocono if I wasn't committed to be there for Hendrick Motorsports and this team in any way that they need me. I think there is a balance between trying to make this transition. First of all, you want Dale to have the comfort of knowing that somebody is there for him. He doesn't have to worry about that aspect of it through this process.

"… Then there is the side of who is the best person to be in the car to get the most points. And then there is the sponsorship side of it as well. So far, from what Rick (Hendrick, team owner) is telling me, that seems to be me. That is why I was at Indy and that is why I'm here."

Gordon has driven the No. 88 the past two races at Pocono (27th) and Indianapolis (13th). Alex Bowman drove the car at New Hampshire to a 26th-place finish.

NASCAR may soon require drivers to curtail their celebratory burnouts to avoid excess damage to the winning vehicles before the post-race inspection process.

Steve O'Donnell, Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer for the sanctioning body, told SiriusXM NASCAR on Tuesday that officials were examining incidents such as Denny Hamlin (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/denny-hamlin.html)'s post-race winning celebration following Sunday's victory in the Cheez-It 355 (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/race-center/sprint-cup-series/cheezit-355.html) at Watkins Glen International (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/nascar-tracks/watkins-glen-international.html).

Hamlin's lengthy post-race burnout along the frontstretch and subsequent spins left him unable to drive his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/articles/team-profiles/joe-gibbs-racing-team-profile.html) Toyota into Victory Lane.

"It's something that's been out there that we are trying to avoid yet balance the celebration," O'Donnell said. "I think (we will see something) in the very near future, and this isn't putting it all on the 11 car, this is something we've talked about, it's a trend we don't like to see."

Xfinity race from Mid Ohio.
Man oh man, talk about a guy that can drive in the rain like no one else in the field yesterday. Nice how Nascar did the BS caution at the end to bunch them back up when he was a clear runaway. Gotta to give major props when you see a guy school the rest of them so hard with pure skill, great race to watch.

Not even a caution with four laps remaining in Saturday's Mid-Ohio Challenge (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/race-center/xfinity-series/race-center-2016/mid-ohio-challenge.html) could detour road course expert Justin Marks (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/justin-marks.html) from scoring his first career NASCAR XFINITY (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/xfinity-series.html) Series victory at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/nascar-tracks/mid-ohio-sports-car-course.html).

Marks, driver of the No. 42 Katerra Chevrolet Camaro, withstood a rain-soaked challenge from Sam Hornish Jr (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/sam-hornish-jr.html) on the final restart, but Marks showcased his road racing skills when it counted most and stretched his lead to 3.7 seconds when the checkered flag flew.

I only caught the last 15 laps or so, but it was funny when they showed the times and he was about 3 seconds a lap quicker than the 2nd and 3rd place drivers ... dude has skills!

Andy Lally, another road course guy, had a great top 10 finish considering that his wiper system quit on him!

cheers

Tony Eury Jr back in the crew chief saddle.

Veteran crew chief Tony Eury Jr. will serve as crew chief for Todd Szegedy in the No. 15 14-50 Connection car in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race Wednesday atBristol Motor Speedway (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/nascar-tracks/bristol-motor-speedway.html), Rob Fuller Motorsports announced Monday afternoon.

"After getting to know Todd, I am excited to be his crew chief in Bristol," Eury said in a team release. "I think we have a legitimate shot to win, and we're going to have some fun with it as well. I've paid attention to how the track is from past modified races, and I think working on super late models every week can be applied to working on the modified car as well. We are going in with a game plan, but I might bring a few ideas to the table that we can try and see what happens!"

Not looking good for JR.

Earnhardt, Jr. to miss remainder of the season: Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the #88 Chevrolet SS for Hendrick Motorsports, has not been medically cleared to compete for the remainder of the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season as he continues to recover from a concussion. Earnhardt has missed the last six Sprint Cup races while undergoing treatment. He has been regularly evaluated at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Sports Medicine Concussion Program under the direction of Dr. Micky Collins and with Charlotte neurosurgeon Dr. Jerry Petty.
"I wish I could return to the #88 team this season," Earnhardt said. "To say I'm disappointed doesn't begin to describe how I feel, but I know this is the right thing for my long-term health and career. I'm 100 percent focused on my recovery, and I will continue to follow everything the doctors tell me. They're seeing good progress in my test results, and I'm feeling that progress physically. I plan to be healthy and ready to compete at Daytona in February. I'm working toward that.
"The support from both inside and outside the race team has been overwhelming. Everyone has been so encouraging and positive, from my teammates and sponsors to my family, friends and fans. It's motivating and humbling at the same time."
Jeff Gordon and Alex Bowman will drive for the #88 team in the season's 12 remaining races. In Earnhardt's absence, four-time Cup Series champion Gordon, 45, filled in at Indianapolis, Pocono, Watkins Glen and Bristol. Bowman, 23, drove at New Hampshire and Michigan.
"I know how hard Dale has worked and how frustrating this is for him," said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. "He wants to be back, and we want him back, but we want it to be for the long haul. We've had incredible support from everyone involved with the team, including all of our sponsors. They've put Dale's health first every step of the way."
"Jeff and Alex will give us a great opportunity over the rest of the season. Jeff is one of the best of all time and knows our system. He brings things to the table that no one else can. Alex is a young driver with a lot of talent, and he will give us a fresh perspective. We know they're not only capable of running up front and giving us a chance to win, but they'll help us get better."

So when Kenseth intentionally wrecked Logano he drew a two race suspension, let's see if Nascar has the balls to kick Tony to the curb he clearly belongs.

AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Pushed to his limit after three races worth of slights, Matt Kenseth (http://www.espn.com/rpm/driver?seriesId=2&driverId=143) firmly believed he had no choice but to retaliate against Joey Logano (http://www.espn.com/rpm/driver?seriesId=2&driverId=4319).
His deliberate wrecking of Logano drew a two-race suspension from NASCAR, and Kenseth said Friday he would have handled the payback differently had he known he would draw such an unprecedented penalty.
But in a telephone interview with The Associated Press, Kenseth said he would do it again.
"I really stand by my actions," he said. "I feel like there's a breaking point. It wasn't just about being mad; it was about getting this fixed. It was time to make it stop."

No chance. I think they said it's okay for the second place guy to wreck the leader intentionally but it's not okay for a laps down driver to intentionally wreck the leader. So it must be okay for a back marker to wreck a further back marker intentionally. Really makes you look back at Stewart's actions when he killed Kevin Ward in a sprint car race.

You intentionally wreck a fellow competitor, meh no big deal. But if the car is out a thou or two in the post race laser inspection, P3 penalty, thousands in fines, and loss of driver and owner points. NASCAR has lost their way.
