1997 Cobra, 69,000km, mostly stock. Weekend cruiser.
I haven't done the first oil change on it yet.
I think the car has Royal Purple synthetic in it from the previous owner.
What engine oil weight and filter are the cobra guys using?
There is some debate on the net on whether to use 5w20 or 5w30.
No secret I'm a fan of 10w30 full synthetic in the Cobra no matter how you use it. Given the 4v's are getting older and prone to some cold start valve seal related smoke, seeing a marked improvement switching to 10w30 high mileage. It's claim to fame, they've put the old skool seal conditioner additive back in. I'm pretty sure at one time it was standard in all oils, guess it's good marketing how they've brought something old back as something new and charge somewhat of a premium for it.
I only wish someone released the same additive in a full syn oil.

What brand of oil is that in the 10W30 that has the additive in it again Rick?
I know Castrol does for sure.
Be interested to hear if Amsoil offers one as well, on my list to check in the spring, hope our Amsoil dealer will chime in.
Only took a short time to see a difference.

PartSource has Castrol Edge FTT Full synthetic on sale, would this be suitable?

I am not a fan of high mileage oil mostly because once you start it there is no turning back. High mileage oil is not really ever needed if you use a quality oil from the get go, to tell someone that they "need" high mileage oil after a certain mileage is mostly just for advertisement. The special "conditioner" in high mileage oil swells seals and gaskets making them seal better but doesn't fix the problem. If you're not experiencing any leaks right now I wouldn't switch to a high mileage oil.
If you are experiencing smoke at start up a 10W-30 synthetic should eliminate it.
To make a proper recommendation I need to know what you do with your car, any track use, do you store it in the winter?
As far as filters, stick with Motorcraft, Wix, or Purolator. If you want the best Amsoil and Royal Purple filters cannot be beat with their synthetic media.

I have used both 5w30 and 10w30 synthetic with similar results. I used a mopar filter as they are readily available to me.
Think I will try Quaker State high mileage this spring since I had good results with it in my dd
