It's almost absurd to buy parts now, even used parts are rising lol
So I went from a nice interior plan with new carpet, new leather seat upholstery, etc... To used black parts and 98GT seats. May even paint my console as it's the last black part I need to save a few pennies. So my plans changed...
It's like a 40% tax + HST....
I eat lots of fruit
and the price of fruit right now is making my eyes bug out.....$11.49 for 5 fucking honey crisp apples
I normally didn't look or care about the price of fruit
I'm looking now

$11.50 for 5 apples? Where do you shop?
$11.50 for 5 apples? Where do you shop?
it was at Metro last weekend
had 3 other bags (pears and other apples) that seemed a bit high....like $6.50 for 5 instead of $4.50 for 5.....then she rang up these Honey Crisp apples at $11.49 and I was floored
our low $$ is kicking the shit out of the price of fruits and veg
when an apple costs as much as a beer...we got problems

Agree! Plus our government is going to introduce a carbon tax, further increasing the cost of off-season fruits/vegs. We're going to be kicked back into the days of preserving food / eating fresh in season only and an orange for a christmas present*.
*It was a thing back in the day, fruits were so expensive that getting an orange in the winter was a real treat.

I hope things turn around before next August. I have a week planned for holiday in Ohio, but adding 50% to meals and hotels is not too cool with me for my cheap trip to see some friends. Maybe I can convince them to come up here!!
Returning to Woodward this coming season was in the cards, no way I can justify + 50%, just isn't going to happen nor will attending any Nascar / NHRA races.

My trip will be to Akron for the Saleen Nationals. Really strong friendships and the shit-ton of fun to be had will still take me there, but man it's going to cost a lot more than it should. You should join if you're looking for a fun car trip that isn't too far away (closer than Woodward anyway).
Our Condo fee's this year will cost $2100 more than 2 years ago.

Just had a chat with my lunch guy - the prices of veg has increased three-fold for him, if not more.
Wait 'til the menu prices have a chance to catch up with reality - eating out will soon be a luxury.
And let's not forget the price of gas - it ought to be closer to .75, yet we feel happy that it's less than a buck.

Timmy, we were in Alaska in August. 5 gala apples were $16. U.S.
My wife went through this in the 90's when the $ was like 65 cents. She didn't want to go south because of the $$$. I asked her if she wanted to be warm for a couple of weeks or shovel and shiver? We went south lol. There are plenty of ways to save on vacation. Gas is still far cheaper. Eat breakfast/a couple dinner's in your condo...
Mexico in 3 weeks. Peso vs. CAD is stable
Lake Lure, NC in June. Love it there. Nothing will keep me away.
River Cruise in August. Prices where in CAD and a better value then U.S. pricing.
I'm 54 soon. Just hanging out waiting for the big one. I'm tired of this hell hole city. And I want to die $1 in debt. CAD won't hold be back...

No real impact on US purchases since I have some US income so that gets used to fund non-Canadian spending....natural hedge.
Have noticed it with food but a few years ago I started buying the fresh stuff on a local/seasonal basis or at least minimizing travel distance for things that cannot be sourced locally/in-season, although this was mostly for freshness and quality (eg. I'll only buy oranges/grapefruit from US not South Africa or Israel - yes, those are the choices).
Anything from western or southern US has double impact of exchange rate and higher prices due to reduced crop yield from drought or floods.

If you have a lot of US dollar investments that were made at par you are up 40% on the exchange alone and the US market has appreciated over the past 5 years so that's on top of the 40% return. Depending on the size of the investment, the extra cost of food and other stuff if you don't consume a lot isn't a big issue. All depends on lifestyle and where you put your money to work. Four years ago the mantra was to move your capital to the US market - anyone who did that is likely smiling now (more recently it's been to move some capital to the Euro market after the US bull run).

Oh well, bread and water for the next 5 yrs; unless I'm on a date; lol
As far as the weak dollar goes - we are low man for the next while, likely more than a couple of years. Poor provincial spending and leadership policies in Alberta and Ontario aren't going to help; likely neither will our male model in Ottawa. The glut of oil and low prices aren't the politicians fault, but they should be in the know before the general public is in terms of planning and implementing solutions/strategies. Don't need to be an economist to understand that. Lots of reality surrounding us.
Saw an interesting diatribe by Kevin O'Leary calling out Alberta premier. I don't like the dude, but he does make sense with what he's saying.

Aren't you better off putting some money into a TFSA, trying to grow it there, then taking if out to pay the extra taxes at year end? If you have the same growth in the RRSP then you'll pay tax in the gain at your marginal tax rate when taking it out to pay your tax bill. Only benefit I see is if your deduction can allow you to drop down into the next lower tax bracket (or if you do the RRSP route, take the refund and invest it inside a TFSA, then use the principal/gains (if any) to pay your incremental tax bill). Plan at this time of the year for tax time in 2017 and you'll keep more money in your pocket at the end (and less to Justin and Kathleen unless you want to help them pay down their bills like Kathleen is asking us to do).

can't tell if that's sarcasm
but.... I'm not buying any fruit with bruises, nicks, pecks or gashes....and they're put on the conveyor belt at the end so they don't get other bags put on top of them in the cart
you hand me an apple with a bruise on it...I ain't eating it
I'm sure it was sarcasm. If you had said you polish and zaino your apples and keep them in a bowl made from solid machined billet I'd believe it.

I used to be like that... Went from "yuck, apple with a bruise" to "meh I'll cut out the bruised part" to "fuck it... eat it". We juice our fruits/vegs when they don't look so good though, makes great juice.

Just more stuff in them and mutations to grow and look consistent. Ever look at the organic ones? They certainly don't look like the bright, shiny, perfectly shaped ones from the "regular" section.

We drive out to a place in Wicklow, ON ,Knights Apples, it's a whole sale place where they do grading and storage & buy bushels of apples , C grade, as my dog eats them, nothing wrong with them , they are just not perfect for the grocery store , 99 % of them are irregular skins etc, just not perfectly round, depending on the apple type , 1/2 bushel of Courtland are $10 -12 , full bushel of Mac's are $22 , even the "A" perfect ones are $35 for a full bushel, & they keep perfect in my garage ! & the quality is much better than grocery store one that have been shipped from god only know where and banged around ! it just a nice cruise about an hour outside of Ajax !
Back in November we were talking to a B&B owner in the Niagara region and they were complaining about all the good fruit that gets rejected and ends up going to the dump/landfill by the truckload (even though they're perfectly fine) - with their help we're trying to get something going where it can get re-directed to groups in Caledon that can use it as part of their services/community effort to feed people who need help, etc., or donate it to local groups that can use it in fundraising efforts. Wifey has sourced a couple commercial fridges/freezers and kitchens in Caledon (NFP based) to use for this.

yea.. but too bad i pay tax here in canada..
doesnt just work that way..
basically if you are paid 100k USD yes you make 140k canadian..
but when its tax time gov't makes up some exchange rate.. and looks to see if you paid enough.. usually you have to dump rrsp to balance out.
You shouldn't be paying any more Canadian tax now that the exchange rate is big. Even though you pay in Canada on the higher amount, don't forget you get the foreign tax credit to offset it; based on US $ also converted to Canadian (including the FICA and Medicare contributions on your W2). Also any contributions to a 401K are now deductible on your Canadian return (new in the last 3 or 4 years).
In times when exchange is high, most of my clients only have to fork out the Health Tax. Usually the high amount of $750. I assume you have an accountant helping you out with your cross border stuff. If not, you might want to have one check the your returns out; they are quite complex.

These apples I speak of are neither nicked or bruised etc, some the stem is not centered, or they are not perfectly round, etc, their C grade apples are nicer than some of the ones I see in the store, they also sell A grade if so interested, but to me just not worth the extra dough, & too us it worth the drive, we are always out cruising out that way anyways so why not stop in to a place that has the freshest apples you can find , from the tree to you !
FYI ~Apples that fall on the ground are not allowed to be used for anything except left to rot, not even allow to be used as feed for animals , that's the LAW, we go to allot of orchards in the summer and there are ton and tons of apples that drop or get knocked off by birds wind etc.

^^^i used to work for an orchard. Those are called 'grounders', and they most definitely get used. They end up in the juice plant.

I do have someone but you still have to put in your RRSP to offset it with higher exchange.
the foreign tax does help... but USA taxes less than canada with the exchange.. either way usually i have only paid the $750.. but this year is the first year that the USD has been significantly higher...
good thing is i have 2 write offs for dependants.

Yeah, I really like the dependent write off in the US, it really helps.
I also like how you can usually get a US refund and state refund that when converted can usually offset any Canadian tax payable. The RRSP works also.

Well i figure RRSP is for myself and can hopefully only grow.. its better than paying WYNNE with a tax payment.
