The Monday night launch and rocket landing – December 21, 2015 – helps further the goal of bringing down the cost of space travel. It was the Falcon 9’s first launch in six months following a launch failure last June, and the first-ever upright landing of a rocket used to deploy satellites to space.

The upgraded 23-story-tall Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 8:29 p.m ET (0029 UTC on December 22). The Falcon 9’s second stage and payload separated from the first stage a little more than two minutes later, at an altitude of about 60 miles (100 km).

While the second stage fired its engine and headed to space, the first stage also relit its engines for the return to Earth.

The engine burn slowed the rocket’s descent from supersonic speed, as the main stage of the Falcon 9 returned to a landing site about six miles (10 km) from the launch pad.

By no means was I trying to underscore the importance of this accomplishment, he did what NASA can do for 1/11 of the price and in relatively short time. Once he irons this out Elon Musk owns Mars.

The Falcon 9 uses liquid propellant (liquid oxygen and kerosene) in it's Merlin engines. It uses all it's fuel during the re-entry and landing maneuver. It likely only had a 100 lbs of fuel in reserve when it crashed.

That’s exactly my point I’m being taxed extra for the sake of the environment I’ve been lectured by people for my big truck and past non fuel efficient cars and these exact same people praise Musk as some god of the eco friendly while the guy puts moremshit in the air than everyone on this forum combined will in their life time.

If I have my boat out and knowingly take it out with an oil leak I can be charged huge. Hell if I get caught refilling from a jerry can on the water I can be fined huge

People are freaking out about pipelines becasie of the risk of an oil leak. People boycot oil companies becasie of oil leaks and this guys crashing rockets full of fuel into the ocean and no one gives a rats ass.

I believe it was in the big round point at the top of the centre rocket. Once in orbit the shield peeled away to expose the car.

What's interesting is that the rocket landing target is in the ocean. If all systems are go, it changes direction at the last minute and lands on solid ground. If something goes wrong (like this time) it continues into the ocean.

im sure the math involved in mind numbing. getting to space is about having just enough fuel to get your weight to space. the more weight the more fuel, the more fuel the more weight, its like a looping paradox.

i can imagine that just a one or two minor inefficacy's on launch and it would seal the deal on posable landing.
