I feel perfectly safe walking around in downtown TO. All 3 are probably gang related in retaliation for something else. Terrible if someone innocent gets caught in the crossfire though.

..............and another one.

Toronto police are searching for suspects after two men were shot while hanging out in their backyard in Rexdale on Sunday night.
According to Supt. Ron Taverner, at around 11 p.m., two men were in their backyard at a building near Martin Grove Road and Finch Avenue when two unknown suspects approached them and opened fire.
Both men sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to a trauma centre with serious injuries.

Police said Monday that the victims are expected to survive.
“These were just two young men that were in their backyard… as far as we are aware, there was nothing nefarious with what they were doing,” Taverner told CP24 Monday morning.
“Certainly, in this case, it would appear these two victims have no criminal record or anything like that but we are not sure in a lot of cases what other affiliations people have.”
Police say new security cameras were recently installed at the Toronto Community Housing building where the shooting took place and investigators are hoping to glean some evidence from the video footage.
Last night’s shooting was the most recent in a string of violent incidents involving guns in the city this past weekend.
On Friday, two men were fatally wounded in separate shootings just hours apart and on Saturday, four men were injured after gunfire erupted at a building in Toronto’s Eglinton West neighbourhood where a baby shower was taking place.
Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders told reporters Sunday that the violence this weekend was a “blip."
Speaking to media at Queen's Park Monday before his meeting with the premier, Saunders said he does not believe there is evidence to suggest that any of the shootings are linked.
"I don’t believe there are connections at this point that I’m aware of but the officers are investigating and there is some traction with a couple of the cases and we hope to solve them," he said.
Saunders assured Torontonians that the city is a safe place to live.
"The numbers speak very loudly that this is one of the safest urban cities in North America," he added.
Statistics provided to CP24 by Toronto Police Service spokesperson Mark Pugash show that while the number of shooting homicides this year has not yet surpassed the number of shooting homicides in 2014 (26 versus 27), the number of shooting occurrences were significantly higher. Toronto saw 242 shooting incidents this year compared to 170 last year.

Another one today.

A man is dead after a shooting in the city’s northwest end.
Toronto police say the incident happened on Larchmere Avenue, in the area of Islington and Steeles avenues, just before 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Toronto paramedics say an adult male was found at the scene without vital signs and was pronounced dead a short time later.
No arrests have been made, but police are searching for a black car they say was spotted leaving the area in a northbound direction.

More violence.

One person is dead following a stabbing in downtown Toronto, police have confirmed.
It happened on McGill Street, in the Yonge and Gerrard streets area, shortly before 9:30 p.m.
According to police, the victim was talking with someone outside a residence on the street when they were approached by a third person who stabbed the victim.

TORONTO – Toronto city councillor Giorgio Mammoliti believes a turf war is behind the recent rash of violent shootings in the city and suggests it is time to call in the army for help.
“We have a well established federal reserve, an army perhaps, that can come in and help the police in these circumstances,” Mammoliti told reporters Tuesday evening at the scene of a fatal shooting in west-end Toronto.
“They have the tools. They have more tools than the police department has to be able to track people down and treat them as the terrorists that they are.”
The councillor’s comments come after a man was shot to death around 5 p.m. Tuesday evening in the city’s Rexdale neighbourhood.
No arrests have been made, but police are searching for a black car they say was spotted leaving the area northbound.
Although police have not indicated the crime is gang related, Mammoliti believes it is linked to a turf war that has taken over the city.
“A few weeks ago there was sporadic shots being heard in this area. After discussion with our 31 Division, we did get briefed that things could be bad and that they were anticipating that these kinds of events would take place,” Mammoliti told reporters.
“We have our own terrorists. They are homegrown terrorists and they’re here and they’re called drug dealers. And they’re on our streets.”

Since Friday, there have been at least six shootings in the city, including a fatal drive–by in the downtown core on Friday afternoon.
Three people were also hospitalized after a shooting near a baby shower on Eglinton Avenue West on Saturday night.
Police Chief Mark Saunders remarked last weekend the violence is an outlier in an otherwise safe city.
“Toronto is one of the, if not the safest city in North America, so it’s a blip. We have these blips. We have these weekends,” Saunders said on Sunday.
VIDEO: Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders reacts to recent crime wave
http://i0.wp.com/media.globalnews.ca/videostatic/129/75/SUN_SAUNDERS_131215.jpg?w=670&quality=70&strip=allStill, Mammoliti believes the violence is part of a larger problem the city and federal officials need to address.
“Not sure if people remember this but a number of years ago there was roundup, so to speak, of drug dealers. They were put in jail,” he said.
“They are out now and it’s a turf war going on in the City of Toronto.”
Mammoliti maintains the police department is doing all it can to stem the violence but more resources are needed.
“Let’s figure out what the federal government has in the way of tools to be able to help us,” he said.
“It may or may not be the army, I don’t know. But certainly, our particular police force is doing what they can under the circumstances.”

A whole bunch easier to dismiss the violence when it's criminal on criminal, in this case, victim could not be more removed from that part of society, what a waste. R.I.P.

The victim of a fatal stabbing in the city’s downtown core last night has been identified as a 39-year-old cancer researcher and adjunct professor at Ryerson University.
The stabbing happened outside a home on McGill Street, near Yonge and Gerrard streets, shortly before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night.
Police said the victim, identified Wednesday as Mark Ernsting, was speaking with someone on the street when he was approached by a third person and stabbed.

Police tape marks the scene as police investigate a fatal stabbing on McGill Street near Yonge and Gerrard streets Wednesday December 16, 2015.

He was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition, where he later died.
On its Twitter page Wednesday, the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research confirmed that Ernsting was an employee.
“We are deeply saddened at the passing of Mark Ernsting - a talented researcher and terrific person. Our thoughts are with his loved ones,” the organization said.
According to a video posted on the OICR website, Ernsting was a senior biomedical engineer in the institute’s drug discovery program and was working on nano technology to better deliver tumor-targeting drugs.
In addition to that Ernsting also worked as a adjunct professor with the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science at Ryerson University.
"Those who knew and worked with Mark said he was a wonderful colleague and an excellent researcher. At Ryerson, he worked with graduate students in our electrical and computer engineering department and collaborated on research with faculty member," Interim President Mohamed Lachemi said in a statement. "We are deeply saddened by this senseless, tragic event."
A post shared to Facebook by a friend described Ernsting as “funny, kind, and brilliant” and said he left behind a partner who was ‘the love of his life.’
“This is so incredibly pointless. What a waste. What a loss,” friend Randy Smith wrote.
Toronto police said Wednesday that a suspect in the murder was arrested at the scene of an unrelated incident near Summerhill Avenue and Yonge Street, about an hour after the stabbing.
Calvin Michael Nimoh, 21, has been charged with second-degree murder.
So far, police have not described a possible motive in the killing.
On Wednesday afternoon, Mayor John Tory showed up at the crime scene to leave flowers near the site where Ernsting was attacked.
Anyone with information about the case is being asked to get in touch with investigators.

The "blip" continues.

One man is dead and several people are injured after at least three separate shootings across Toronto early Sunday.

Toronto police said several people were gathered at a beauty parlour in a plaza near McCowan and Ellesmere Rds. when shots were fired around 4:21 a.m.

Paramedics found a man with gunshot wounds to the chest at the scene. He did not have vital signs and was rushed to a trauma centre in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Toronto police homicide squad has taken over the investigation and has not released any details on suspects.

Earlier in the night, police and paramedics received multiple calls about shots fired at a house party on Niagara St. west of Bathurst St. The calls, which started coming in around 2:30 a.m., reported gunshots both inside and outside the property.

Two people were taken to hospital in serious condition — a man whose head was grazed by a bullet, and a woman who was shot in the leg. Several nearby cars and taxis were riddled with bullet holes and drivers and pedestrians were narrowly missed by the gunfire, police said.

A third victim, a male in his 20s, was later found near Bathurst and Dupont Sts. around 6:48 a.m. and was rushed to a trauma centre in serious condition with a single gunshot wound to his back.

Nine people have been arrested in relation to the shooting and police are still processing the half-block scene.

Emergency crews were also called to a home in the O’Conner Dr. and Victoria Park Ave. area at 3:23 a.m. after a man was shot multiple times outside a residence. The victim, who paramedics said was 25 years old, was rushed to a trauma centre in serious condition. Police later said the man’s injuries are not life-threatening, and investigators are searching for two suspects.

Meanwhile in Mississauga, Peel police are investigating a shooting and double stabbing that both happened Saturday night.

Police were called to Darcel Ave., in the Finch Ave. W. and Hwy. 427 area, at 9:47 p.m. after reports of gunshots. Officers found “evidence of a shooting,” but the victim, an 18-year-old man, wasn’t located until he turned up in a Toronto-area hospital just after midnight. His injuries are non-life-threatening.

Then, at 10:50 p.m., police responded to a call about a fight on Nightshade Ln., southeast of Ninth Line and Derry Rd. W. Two men in their 20s who were known to each other had a dispute that resulted in them stabbing each other, police said. Their injuries are non-life-threatening.

I was in and out of bars in Montreal before the huge raid on the Hell's and Mr. Mom Boucher. They spent a lot of bullets on rivals, still felt safe going to the bars/clubs they owned at the time. Until some kid got shot in the cross-fire. I think they started to blow up vehicles too. Toronto has still nothing on Montreal back in the day. lol

The biggest change is that the city caved in to the bad guys and told police they can no longer stop and card people. Bad guys are now able to carry guns on them and in their vehicles as they know
they can't get stopped UNLESS they do something wrong. If a gun is in reach and that easily accessible they are going to get used. Period! The politicians were so busy trying to appear "Politically Correct"
and show how "progressive" we are here in T.O. they couldn't hear all the warnings from the professionals who advised against it. Seems the rights of the bad guys trump the right to live in a safe city!

Canadians view Toronto as one of the most dangerous cities in the country despite a crime rate that actually places it among the safest, a new poll has found.
Mainstreet Research asked 4,231 Canadians for their opinion on whether 15 major cities are safe or unsafe.
The poll revealed that 47 per cent of respondents view Toronto as unsafe compared to 46 per cent who view it as safe and seven per cent who weren’t sure. Only Winnipeg had a less favourable rating (56 per cent viewed it as unsafe). Montreal was the other city in the bottom three (44 per cent viewed it as unsafe).
Meanwhile, Ottawa topped the list with 72 per cent of respondents viewing the capital city as safe and just 16 per cent perceiving it as unsafe. Charlottetown (65 per cent viewed it as safe) and Moncton (64 per cent viewed it as safe) rounded out the top three.
The results contrast with Statistics Canada’s Crime Severity Index, which takes into account the total number of crimes in a given city as well as the severity.
Toronto actually had the second best score on that index, behind only Quebec City.
“Perceptions compared to Statistics Canada's Crime Severity Index yields some interesting comparisons. Toronto for example, ranks 14th out of 15 in terms of perceived safety, but ranks second behind just Quebec City and narrowly ahead of Ottawa which topped the rank of safest cities as perceived by Canadians,” Mainstreet Research President Quito Maggi said in a press release. “Winnipeg, which is ranked at the bottom by Canadians has a crime severity index lower than Vancouver, Edmonton, Regina and Saskatoon. The results paint an interesting portrait of how we see each other.”
Though age and gender did not appear to be a significant factor in how respondents viewed Canadian cities, there were some regional differences.
Notably, more Quebec residents thought Toronto was unsafe (59 per cent) than Canadians on the whole. Ontario residents had a more favourable view of the city with 55 per cent saying it was safe.
The poll has a margin of error of 1.52 per cent and is considered accurate 19 out of 20 times.
