View Full Version : Excessive Cabin Noise...

At first I thought it was the SLPs. I'm not sure if I became more sensitive to the sounds my car makes but recent long trips and cruises on the highway have made me think otherwise. The SLP LM1s are loud as hell but they were the tip of the iceberg.

I noticed the sound that was causing me headaches were not caused by the SLPs but by something far more sinister... I have no clue if its the transmission or if it is the rear end, but I really cant take it anymore.

Here's the link:

Sorry for the soundcloud link. It was the easiest way to do it. I made it downloadable as well. Maybe I'm hearing things but that sound is driving me nuts! Any thoughts?

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm still hoping its the rear and not the transmission. But it does sound like its coming from the rear...and its VERY...VERY ANNOYING

Sounds like differential noise, if it was trans you would hear it in the center and it would be all the time, not just under load. Keep in mind if you're changing gear ratios you'll likely need a tuner to adjust the speedo.

That's good to know... Luckily I have a SCT tuner handy so it wont be a big issue.

Was the rear end when we drove it a week or so ago.

I just never remembered it being so loud...It may have gotten progressively worse over the year or so that I've had it...could be me. Either way I might need your magical skills ... :glee:

About the same as I've remembered it from the get go. Always louder in the fall n winter with the windows up. Normal for it to get louder as the diff fluid warms up during a longer hwy run.

Rick built my rear. 4.10 gears, quality parts, dead silent, still.

I might be in the same boat ...3:55 to 3:73 is it worth it ?

^Change would be minimal, 4.10s would be better unless it sees a lot of highway use.

That was my old ride I traded for the Cobra...not sure if Trever pulled them out before you bought it from him but I had Steeda install 4:10's along with the LPW diff cover.

Just looked up the old invoice and here is what was installed:

FR Ring and Pinion Installation Kit
Richmond 4:10 Gearset
LPW Diff Cover
Autometer Gauge DPSS
Steeda Subframe Connectors

Trever told me he put the stock ones back in when we were finalizing the deal. So you must be Andrew. It's a shame you never painted the subframes [emoji14]

Right! It's Jeff. I got confused. Ya it was never painted so it's got rust red as the base coat [emoji14]

She's still good. Needed lots of work over the near 2 years I've had her. She's coming along.

Awesome glad she's holding together...the only issue I remember I had when I owned it was 1 injector had to be replaced besides that she was mint.

Cool.

So far I replaced the oil pan, spark plugs (one was fouled and broke apart Inside - Rick used his magic powers to take it out), new front breaks because the others were siezed, dual friction centreforce clutch, remachined flywheel, oem clutch cable, quadrant, firewall adjuster, caster camber plates.. Now I'm looking into a rear rebuild with 373s and an aluminum drive shaft.

I am having a very similar rear end noise.....very noticeable under light load on my 96 GT. Rear end is completely stock but only has 105k. Is there a common part that fails?

ZR

Seeing lots in with low miles (even half of yours Norm) and smoked bearings. Suspect preload was set too far on the snug side from day one.

Typically the carrier bearings? I was hoping not to have the entire thing taken apart, but that looks like it wont be the case. Might as well do gears when I have it fixed.

ZR

Split pretty much even on carrier, pinion or all.

Wonderful...lol.....Is it approximately standard gear installation price + parts?

ZR
11-10-2015, 01:38 PM
Is it cheaper just to install bearings, yes but only if current gear set up is correct.

I have to do something soon, it's really noisey.
