I've been hearing a light grinding metal on metal noise from the mid part of the car. And it would get louder when I engaged the clutch.

So this weekend while picking up stuff from CanuckCleaner. I asked him if he knew what was wrong. He mentioned that it is probably the Clutch bearing and It could go any time.

And with my luck on the way home the sound changes to a high pitch squealing. The clutch pedal shakes when touched. Worst is 1st and 2nd gear. 3rd and 4th had no sound. To make my life interesting I hit every single red light! the whole time just praying to get her home.

Here's video in the garage of the sound.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGWL9xn5-OM

I start the car with the clutch engaged. Then off the clutch and back on

Is it my clutch bearing? How much to fix? Geoff say I might as well replace the clutch too. What clutch should I get? What would that cost?

Thanks in advance for you help

Throw out bearing? If you hear the noise with the clutch out and goes away when you push the pedal its probably a TOB.

If so its a $40 part, install is easy but the transmission has to come out. Could also be a pilot bearing I suppose, same deal, part isnt expensive but you get to bench press a transmission.

Have you changed the clutch on the car before? If not, now is the time.

Sorry I guess I wrote that wrong. It happens when I push the pedal down and goes away when I release

Pretty much the idea is if the transmission has to come out then I want a new clutch. But should I go for something better..if so what? I'm not really mechanically inclined.

Uhh, thats the opposite of what I've seen TOB do, so maybe pilot or something more nefarious is at play.

What are your plans for the car, any aspirations to go FI or Nitrous in the future? Planning on a lot of tracking?

If not then a stock oe replacement is probably fine and the most cost effective. We put an Exedy stock replacement in a friends car, was around $280 for the kit plus another $40 to resurface flywheel and it has done swimmingly so far.

If you want more holding power then stock then look towards a Centreforce unit, I have DF in mine and its got great feel and holding up to boost well so far.

I want to track it 3-4 times a year (Road course). I wouldn't mind trying the 1/4 mile, but I don't see much point...because slow.
In time I'd like to get a supercharger or at least I dream of getting one.

I'd guess you're in for $700-$1000 depending which clutch you choose. If FI is likely then don't cheap out on the clutch or you'll be doing it again in no time.

My opinion you're into a clutch kit brother. That noise along with the chatter in the clutch I felt screams new clutch. Along with that I'd buy a clutch cable, quadrant and adjuster. I read in here that the maximum kit is very good.

Just cost me $1100 for new DF Centerforce clutch, Flywheel and TOB, Labour anywhere from $400-500

Depending on what you already have I would drop a couple extra on New Clutch cable, Pilot Bearing, Firewall Adjuster and quadrant.

well although i don't disagree with the above mentioned clutches etc.....I run a King Cobra clutch in my car and it has stood up to a few hundred high rpm launches on slicks and nitrous as well as its daily tasks.

I think I paid less then $200 USD for a whole kit....

The throw out bearing and pilot bearing have not given me any grief to this point.

Edit: This kit may not fit your car if you have an 11" clutch.....

^11" is a cobra clutch I'm pretty sure. I've run king cobras before and plain old aftermarket replacements, never had a problem but have heard the newer KC clutches are much worse quality than they were. If it was me I'd go for a Centerforce if you track it and plan to boost it. Expensive though, the costs I've seen in here are about right.
In the vid it sounds like a throw out bearing to me, sounds like not much of the bearing is left though, lol.

before speculating and buying parts I would go see rick and find out what it really is

86- to early 01/T-45's mustangs had the 10.5" clutch, late 01/3650 switched to an 11" clutch

I'm also of the opinion, spend the money once and be happy. Can never go wrong with a Centerforce Dual Friction, matching release bearing and have your stock flywheel machined. Add in a quadrant, firewall adjuster and a OE quality cable, fun for years to come.

-Centerforce dual friction clutch kit
-Centerforce release bearing
-Steeda quadrant
-Steeda firewall adjuster
-Maximum Motorsports clutch cable

Thanks guys, I have no intensions of cheaping out. Go big or go home! lol. Mostly its my lack of knowledge. Looking at the Centerforce DF seems the way I want to go.

That list Rick, what would that set me back? I have to save my pennies. I get a nice bonus in Nov. So this season is done! After this month the car is no longer insured.

Its sad I'm going to miss Track day and the Algonquin cruise. :crying:

Couldn't be happier with my centerforce df.. but I still haven't changed my clutch cable, adjuster and quadrant so maybe I could be.

It is pricey but well worth it.

Ya I think I will go that route. Just need cash. Some moron decided this was a good summer to get engaged. The same Moron's a/c died.

The stang is just not on the top of the list.

Centerforce Dual Friction DF021057

I'll probably wait until the spring to get the work done. Since I have already stored her away. Thanks for the help. I'll keep you posted if anything changes

Excellent choice you will not regret.
If you don't already have one, suggest quadrant + firewall adjuster.
Be sure to store inside where it won't see moisture n cause rust.

So week or so ago I had to change the tires on the DD. In order to do this I had to take the Stang out of the garage. I rolled her down the driveway, but I had to drive it back up. That meant putting the battery back in an starting her up with the messed up release bearing. I also needed to fully prep her for winter and the tank was pretty much empty. So after doing the tires on the DD I made many trips to the gas station with jerry cans and also picked up some seafoam.

Anyhoo, Started the Stang and had to bear with the loud squeal as I ride the clutch up the driveway slowly in reverse. For the seafoam to mix you have to let the car run for a bit. Normally the release bearing would stop making the sound when the car is not in a gear and the clutch pedal is released, but about 30 sec to a min later in idle, it starting making a rattling noise and the clutch petal was vibrating. I instantly shut her off and I pray that I didn't add to the damage!
