View Full Version : Chicken Little here again - Thunderstorm/Tornado watch for S.Ontario

Or is it the boy who cried wolf? Regardless, I think if you're in Southern/Central Ontario you should be weather aware. There isn't much standing in the way of storms today, but it could still fall apart and become just a rainy mess. That said, if and I mean IF things hold together we could be looking at large hail and tornadoes. Even Environtment Canada has issued a rare Moderate Risk.

We need a little excitement. As much as we laugh when the entire state of Georgia closes down because they get an inch of snow, I bet the folks in Tornado Alley just laugh at us when we start to panic with these moderate warnings.

Yeah but we suffer through crap winters and 2 weeks of summer to not have to bother with Hurricanes and Tornadoes. :(
Better to be prepared if it does pan out.

Not really a warning. It's just Environment Canada's (the Natioal Weather Service does it too) way of saying that it's a possibility. Think of it a precursor to a watch, which may come later on in the day with warnings like to follow if need be.
That said any warnings should be taken seriously today.

Tornado watch in effect for Caledon.
Watches
9:50 AM EDT Wednesday 10 June 2015
Tornado watch in effect for:
•Caledon
•Halton Hills - Milton
Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes.
Scattered thunderstorms will affect portions of the above regions late this morning and this afternoon. It is possible that a few of these storms could produce an isolated tornado.
Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.
In the event of a tornado, or if a tornado warning is issued for your area, it is recommended you take the following actions: Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.
Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required. Please monitor local media or Weatheradio. To report severe weather, send an email to storm.ontario@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports to #ONStorm.

Just to note: The above were those new special alerts that came across the radio. This is the new thing they do now and I'll tell ya, it gets your attention. I was in the Tim's drive thru when they started coming across the radio, interrupting 680News.
The second one I posted said the tornado was moving towards Sunderland and "this tornado is very dangerous".
If no actual tornado touched down, I gotta say, this is kinda fkd. They made it sound like all hell was breaking loose.

Was at the chiropractors office where they have the radio on as background music. They have it turned down so low that you could just barely hear the signal, but then not the actual warning. LOL, receptionist asked me: "Did you hear that? It's been doing that since noon."

Same thoughts here. Although I will look at the weather radar and if I see nothing but thick nasty clouds coming my way, I'll take it more seriously. There are tell tell signs of nasty weather coming at you though like cumulonimbus (sp?), mammatas clouds, wind direction (or shift) and some trees will turn their leaves upside down during strong winds. That's when it will really hit the fan. Worst weather I've been in was the ice storm in Quebec and before that a small tornado or something strong cut through my small town, I was pretty young though and thought it was cool to see a roof cut off one house and land in another's pool.
Downright creepy sounding.

I think there are two issues that EC should address. Both have the same simple solution too.
Most people assume when there are severe storms are forecast it'll come through as one big messy line of storms (which it usually does) whereas yesterday there were a couple discreet cells with one dominate cyclic super cell that I was chasing with a couple other guys. That said the way EC could address the warning issue at least in cases like yesterday, would be to use what's called a "polygon warning"*. A "polygon warning" is basically a targeted warning for areas that are likely in the path of the storm, instead of using the shotgun method of blasting out warnings for areas that MIGHT be in the path. As for putting most of Southern and Central Ontario under a tornado watch, given the setup for yesterday, I believe EC made the right call.

Too bad it didn't drop a tornado. There's always next time, but it was cool to chase with Mark Robinson and Jaclyn Whittal from the Weather Network until we all got separated because of traffic. I ended up sticking with the two chasers I started out with, and we got a much better view of the storm.

Little over cautious on the warnings Maybe. But I think it's good they are making an attempt.
I know it's different in the big cities. But there is an issue with the way they do stuff here in rual towns. I had this conversation last year with a couple local guys. In small towns our fire departments are all volunteer. All members of the departments have pagers but when ever there is a fire call they also sound the "fire alarm". The same alarm that's used for tornado warnings and any other pending disaster. The problem this has created. Is the town wide alarm is sounded once a week on practice night and anytime the fire department has a call. Didn't matter if it's an accident, fire or a false alarm at one of the mills of old folks homes. So everybody in the community has grown accustom to the alarm. It goes off and everyone ignores it. If a tornado was headed straight for my town and they sounded the alarm. No one would pay any attention.
