I tried researching this and came up with various answers. I'm assuming someone has run into this issue. I'm mounting billet Specialities using the washer, nut/shank style lug nut.

I have 1/4" of thread empty in the end of the 1/2" nut. The entire shank is threaded. Is this okay or common?

Will this pass a tech inspection ? I haven't seen any posts about guys bolting these on and needing to install longer studs. So what's the answer?
Thanks

Should be fine, there is lots of stud in the nut when you look at how long the nuts are. Im not sure about tech though. I race at Shannonville... there is no tech lol.

7-8 full turns of the nuts seems to be the accepted answer for proper thread engagement to be able to torque the nuts properly.

^^ thanks. Once again I'm looking at a steep learning curve. I've got it figured out now. Bigger job then I thought but what isn't with this car. Thanks for the advice guys.

Obviously, the lugs you have are designed for longer studs, so you are set if you ever want to upgrade to some ARP 3" studs.

most of the time I see guys running drag style wheels they always have extended studs, now I know why, looks a bit funny with normal rims but I wouldnt risk the safety

Nhra says the threads need to engage the hex part of the lug nut the width of the stud. So it needs to engage in 1/2 inch. If it does your good if not you need longer studs. I just went thru this with my car.

Just a rule of thumb for threads and open style nuts is the thread should be 4 or5 threads past the nut for proper holding of said bolt shear. Will it wwork the way you have it....it very well should, but if you plan on running it frequently the 3" studs would be the correct way to run this set up.

I'm going to switch to longer studs ASAP.
Mysterious black number elevens have started showing up near corn fields.

Agreed, should get longer studs. When i went through tech, he stuck his pen inside and sorta measured how much was needed to come out to make it flush or sorta sortta the edge of the rim....Ya don t wanna not pass tech, ruin day..Sometimes even depends were ya goi,,, Sparta not as strict as TMP , Grand bend is prob most strict...Better to be as safe as possible, not just ok..

On a S197 ARP stud versus an OEM stud. The head of the McGard lug nut for Racestars is not engaged by the OEM threads. When I raced in the 70's the NHRA ruling was 3" studs in all modified classes. Personally I would not risk using the OEM studs.

^^ thanks for the pic. It illustrates the issue well. Thread of stud is into the nut a little but not going to risk it. Putting new longer studs in this week.
