Kitchen cabinets refinishing? Any ideas or suggestions?

Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience with painting kitchen cabinets? I am looking to get my kitchen redone in a lacquer like glossy finish. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Instead of painting my guy just changed the doors and door handles.
He painted everything else. Its not perfect but it works as it is a rental property.

We did ours ourselves.

There are specifics cleaners and products meant for cabinets. So you don’t have to completely strip everything down.

We got it from Benjamin Moore.

Are you looking to DIY or outsource? In either case are the doors currently real wood or a laminated finish?

Outsourced ideally but if there is a way to get it nice and glossy by DIY then I am for it.

Did it myself 2 years ago and it still looks like new. Prepped by dulling up the finish (oak cabinets) using 180 grit sand paper and Scotch-Brite pads. 2 coats of Bulls Eye 123 primer, followed up with 2 coats of Sherwin Williams ProClassic Cabinet/Trim Paint.

I could be wrong with this, but I have only ever heard of paint options for refinishing cabinets, not a lacquer finish as you have mentioned. Unless you are speaking of high gloss paint but as far as I am aware, lacquer would not be able to go over an existing finish so everything would need to be stripped to bare wood.

We did ours with paint.

Degrease, 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of white. Key is to use proper cabinet paint.

I actually want a high gloss finish. I actually said "lacquer like" but there are shops that do it from what they told me.

I refinished this with automotive single stage urethane —that's actually Ford white lol and atlas yellow. Maybe you can fin a body shop to do it...?

I believe white high gloss or grey high gloss. Not 100% sure ATM.

I just got a quote from one guy.

"Approx $2700+HST (Italian/German lacquer paint)

The price includes all materials. We are using professional Italian/German lacquer paint. 2 days work on-site with taping, preparation, and spraying, then 4-7 days work with doors in a shop.

Extra if needed:
1. Make a new hole for handle/knobs for $10/per handle/knob;
2. Fill hole $8/per door;
3. Soft hinges $15 +HST (Blum) per hinge;
4. Two-tone Kitchen $300+HST"

That sounds okay. Was gonna say careful with darker colours. In high gloss they will show everything
