My 91 build will be getting A/C. I have all the pieces. Is there a way to bench test the compressor?
None that I"m aware of (no AC expert here but do a good bit of it).

Nothing specific that’s I’ve heard of, but if you know how the system works you could get a good idea by hand. First give the crank a spin by hand, then plug the holes and feel for a change, one side will be suction, the other discharge.
Give the pulley a good spin too and check for any grittiness or noise, it should be smooth.
Lastly you can energize the coil and check if it pulls in, usually a 9v battery will be enough, or you can use a 12v if you’re brave : )

Even if it passes the above - it could still have a leaking seal(s).
For the cost of it, i'd start with a new compressor if you can swing it.....in around $300 on RockAuto

I may look into rebuilding it. Not a pressing issue since winter is coming and I move slowly, but kinda the way I roll.

my build speed could be classified as a "generational project", sort of like a generational space mission where the launch crew's great grand children are the ones that arrive at the destination.

+1 on the above.
