View Full Version : is the carbon tax working?

I was led to believe that the carbon tax would force people to limit usage.
"Rules for thee but not for me"
"Naturally, Trudeau’s high rate of jet travel comes at a substantial price in carbon emissions. Jet fuel is one of the dirtier fossil fuels, emitting 2.5 kg of carbon dioxide for every litre burned (the emissions are heavier than the original fuel because carbon dioxide is composed heavily of oxygen burned in the combustion process).
Trudeau’s July jet travel emitted roughly 85.8 tonnes of greenhouse gases into the earth’s atmosphere.
For context, the household emissions (including gasoline and fuel oil purchases) for an average Canadian is about 4.1 tonnes per year, according to Statistics Canada . Thus, for the month of July, about every 36 hours Trudeau was burning enough jet fuel to equal the entire yearly carbon emissions for an average Canadian"

Canada and the west in general have decommissioned coal fired powerplants well ahead of end of useful life.
China is building coal fired powerplants at an unprecedented level.
Canada sells coal to China
What difference does it make where the coal is burned WRT "climate change".
Does China have more stringent environmental standards than Canada WRT burning coal?
If you wanted to transition to alternative electricity generation are you better to have cheap plentiful energy or expensive unreliable energy?

The question is Do Canadian's benefit from this TAX?

exactly. It's a raging success from the money extraction perspective. My personal carbon consumption has declined out of necessity. I'm not sure I'm representative. I still see lots of endless idling, wasteful A/C practices etc.
I'd say the biggest success is having the inmates guild their own prison through blind repetition of the climate change alarmism.

I work in public transit. If the temperature is over 29C or under -8C the 3 min idling rule gets thrown out the window and the bus stays running, blasting emissions into the air 24/7. Some layovers where I’m just sitting there waiting for my to leave are up to 20 mins.
Carbon Tax is a crock of shit.

That's my opinion also. I would reframe it as a wealth transfer though, reverse Robin Hood style. Highly organized starting at the indoctrination level with the result being a River Kwai type situation where the inmates are proud and protective of their chains.

China and India are the two biggest contributors to Carbon emissions by far and for all intents and purposes, don't give a flying.....you know what.

But of course don’t forget that while the Us is currently two and India third. The us is averaging a 2% reduction per year and India is adding around 4%
Also don’t forget that every source you check will give a different number.
Also don’t forget that while US is overall a rich country and people can afford the “hit”
In some parts of India and other places in the world they still burn dung for heat. People will die in large numbers if forced to reduce carbon emissions. .

It’s nothing but a joke, all the greenies who are for this crap should be forced give up their private jets and yachts, rules for thee, but not for me.
At least it’s not as bad as NJ where they are making a guy have his truck crushed because it was deleted…poor guy out it for sale and really got screwed over.
https://www.thedrive.com/news/diesel-ram-owner-forced-to-scrap-truck-over-deleted-emissions-equipment?fbclid=IwAR0E_P8Wi0gCcsScJ8MbFxlHg9GuZtA Z9clUT1_FSu2ETrGcFmd8_eXQcqM
A diesel truck owner's battle with the state of New Jersey is leading to the scrapyard. Mike Sebold initially received a letter from the state's Department of Environmental Protection after listing his modified 2008 Ram 2500 on Facebook Marketplace. Officials took issue with the pickup's deleted emissions equipment and, in turn, told Sebold his truck must be returned to stock or taken off the road. But after he decided to turn in his plates and keep it for off-road use, Sebold claims they've forced him to make an appointment with the crusher.
The truck will be crushed this Friday.

They should at least stop subsidizing petroleum (which they've been doing for over 100 years) so we can compare the true pricing between options (also, one is early stage versus mature/cash cow in the life-cycle).

past subsidies may have been a mistake. In the here and now the market should decide. I'm not in favor of "reparations" to electrification.
It's all moot because political motivations will decide where and if your tax dollars get spent. Common sense and practicality take a back seat to vote buying

Humans are predisposed to superstition. The successful humans (those that didn't starve) shared this predisposition "gene". It started with sacrifices for rain, crops, fertility and progressed to organized religions. Modern society is largely secular and the superstition predisposition is finding purchase in climate change, or social causes.

Scientists have predicted that Earth is 15 years away from a "mini ice age," The Telegraph reports. Using a new model of the sun's activity, the solar researchers estimate that in the 2030s the movements of two waves of fluids within the star will lead to a 60% reduction in solar activity. The subsequent decline in Northern Hemisphere temperatures would be similar to the freezing conditions seen in Western Europe during the late 17th century, the scientists announced at the 2015 National Astronomy Meeting. During that time, now known as the Little Ice Age, the Thames River in the United Kingdom froze over for several weeks, which it hasn't done since. Scientists still debate what caused the past cooling; possible explanations include a reduction in sunspots or the eruption of four tropical volcanoes that spewed ash and dust into the atmosphere.

An eruption of Italy’s Mt. Etna, Europe’s highest and most active volcano, does not produce “10,000 times” more carbon dioxide (CO2) than “mankind has in our entire time on earth”. you're still buying into the myth that CO2 is bad. Nose back through the this thread and you'll see newspaper accounts from decades and over 100 years ago of high temperatures, low arctic ice or any number of other weather "anomalies" long before man made CO2 was a thing.
During the warm spell in May I was listening to CBC radio going into alarmist mode with "highest temperatures in 76 years". Spot the self debunk, CO2 levels were lower and the temp still was higher.
Redsn helpfully made me "self aware" of this a couple posts up.

So are these fires being s caused by someone deliberately setting a forest on fire, or by accident because someone had a camp fire that got out of control
I’m guessing the lady in Alberta wasn’t just having 19 different campfires. So what was her motivation to set these fires. Is she crazy or political?

Interesting graph but as with most statistics, lacks context. They should note that during the period of China's acceleration the increase was the result of the global move to make China their outsourced factory with the use of corporate tax incentives for offshore production. Most of that increase actually in China belongs to the global community that utilized offshoring corporate tax incentives so that the post-war acceleration in global GDP was driven off of the backs and development of China's manufacturing industry and their change from agrarian economy to industrial (I believe China had an agri crisis around postWW2 that resulted in a strategic shift to more industrial activity and labour was cheap coming out of a history as an agrarian economy). The trend lines should be adjusted using export data to reflect the increase in economic activity within the western countries that used China as their production facility (on the basis that they would have generated the same if they had kept that corresponding production on shore). So essentially that increase in trendline is our doing as the result of us having big modern homes, 3 TVs in our homes, etc, and all the other stuff we wanted for lower prices that we asked them to make for us for the last 50-60 years
ChickenLips

You can call it rationalizing or avoiding an intellectual/logical flaw in the conclusions drawn. I wonder if Tony presented it this way intentionally to increase click bait/response in the absence of free market/consumption context of the effect of the Nixon administration opening the door for China to the WTO (and related tax incentives to offshore production and the related side-effects).
As for thought experiment, we have had our share of manufacturing related issues with acid rain, damaging the great lakes, ongoing algae blooms, polluted air/smog, oil spills, other production disasters (and that's with offshoring a lot of the consumption driven manufacturing so would have been so much worse if done on-shore), so not sure we have a high horse to say it didn't/couldn't happen here. Hasn't China been the largest investor globally in renewable technology/infrastructure for 5+ years (maybe 10+)? If so, the changeover will take some time but will likely leap-frog us in the future.

Love canal —I think the algae was phosphates, I forget what acid rain was. But one could solve a problem locally by moving it to a new location.
^^^and when you compare that to per capita, the US takes a whopping lead with 2X China. And we are even higher.
I didnt even think about that. Our population vs production is quite substantial... especially when taken into account that we outsource most of our production

The higher our output is the higher they can tax us.
Our output is negative if your factor our carbon soak from trees, so they stopped counting the absorption by trees…..
Excuse makers justify it.

BFF is gone. Moderation simply deletes posts that cross that line. I'm cool with it and try to not cross the line to burden moderation. Knowing where the line is, is fuzzy at times.

what i know about climate change is that my propane bill came today. 709 dollars for the actual propane. + hazmat fee, transportation fee, fuel tax of 85.00 and HST of $102. so on $700 in actual fuel, almost $200 in taxes.

None of this surprises me. Most people just see end product not realizing it takes oil and gas to produce it. 🤦*♂️
