Want to put the battery in the trunk. I want to put it between the wheels above the axle. Doing so means I cant enclose it with a battery box due to accessibility issues.
What are the pros and cons of not enclosing it within the trunk area ?

Not an answer, but an opinion
I had a hatch mounted optima.
The wiring run weighed a ton and box was an inconvenience. I'm going to go with a compact lithium under the hood. Light and close to the starter.
Lithium batteries are more finicky than lead acid so charging and temperature are things to consider. There's no free lunch.
I think enclosing in a vented box is a legality, if not safety issue for hydrogen leakage, explosion risk.

a battery box purpose is to vent battery fumes outside the car through a hose - some cars have batteries mounted in the floor of the cabin behind the passenger seat these are AGM batteries and emit fewer fumes - expensive but may be the best choice
To me better option would be a high end much lighter battery.

Are the benefits worth it on a mostly street driven car? (Yes, I know I'm making an assumption that it is mostly street driven)
I use a lightweight battery (Odyssey PC680) in my foxbody under the hood, works well
