Fried another alternator this week, that will be 3 now. It seems like every couple years my alternator goes. Was on my way home smelt electrical smoke then noticed smoke from under dash, pulled over and alternator was smoking and seized. Also snapped the belt. Anybody else have this problem. Vortech supercharged. Was driving normal when it happened, 404 north bound at rush hour.
O'drive crank pulley or stock?
Has battery gone flat / car boosted?
Battery front or trunk?

Stock crank pulley, Battery good, boosted, battery in trunk.
When installing new alt, make sure mounting boss to the engine is spotlessly clean. First time even I've seen it be an issue was on Ross's car last summer. Off n on alt not charging, alt overheating, all gone after sanding mounting surface clean (my alt rebuilder gave me the tip).
Boosted, with alt's reaching such high amps, they simply can't cope with a totally dead battery.
Battery in trunk, special attention to engine to chassis ground, body ground plus ground at the batt itself.

My problem was over drive rpm alternator, custom pulley Hopefully fixes it...
When I installed a 130 amp 3g alternator in my 89 years ago I installed an extra 4ga ground wire from the engine to chassis as the factory grounds in this car looked wimpy.
No alt issues and it's been in a long time.

I had to go the other way with my 86.
With under drive pullies the alt was not being driven fast enough.

Thanks for all the input. I will go over all connections and clean up all grounds.

I had problem overspinning Alt.... Put a bigger pulley on and all good. My alt guy in Brantford said he s modified them before... Took apart NEW Alt and beefed up the armatures . They didn t like high RPM, he did that also .... been great ever since....

Thanks Whitehot I will definitely swap out the pulley.
If the alternator pulley is too big,you may not get a full charge at idle which sucks.
