Fire Extinguisher / Mount

Just thinking/overthinking as I do. I have sooooo much $$$$$ tied up in a car with a modifed fuel system I should probably have one of these things. Who is running what on their rides and how/where are you keeping it stored?

I just got a small one from Canadian tire, mounted it in the trunk on the mount it came with.

I've contemplated one several times but can't bring myself to have one on the interior in case of a big impact and it breaks loose.

^Bolt it down in the trunk, worst case scenario is it banged around in there, no big deal. Mine never moved though, no accidents but a lot of spirited driving in a lowered car.

Love that placement, but TBH don't really want passengers or passersby (convertible) walking by and seeing it. Trunk seems like a good second option.

Peace of mind/fire prevention. Always worried about an injector or fuel line blowing a seal and spraying fuel on the exhaust, or power steering fluid + headers. Had a buddy lose a very nice vehicle to an engine fire that could have been stopped likely if he had an extinguisher on board so always in back of my mind.

Don is right. To be truthful, the ones you guys have wouldn’t put out a trash can full of paper, let alone a gasoline fire. I’m surprised that they still sell them. Even the 5lbs ones don’t do a lot. We carry 20lbs ones on the rigs and I have only 10lbs ones in my house. If you’re worried, get better insurance because it’s very rare that a car is saved from fire unless it’s right next to the station or it’s a small interior fire. Especially if you are in a more rural area where response times are higher.

That element thing looks interesting, but I’d have to see it used on an actual fire.

Many moons ago, a fire safety technician came to my pace of work to give everyone a safety talk and to demonstrate the proper use of a fire extinguisher. After the session was over I asked him about an extinguisher for the car and he pretty much echoed the above statement, He told us a story about travelling on the 401 to go see a client and came across a car fire. Due to his profession, he said he was obligated to stop and offer assistance. He said he emptied five 20lb extinguishers and still couldn't knock the fire down (he used all the units he had in his van).

This would really be the only way to properly protect your investment. Similar to an automatic system in a restaurant kitchen.

I've unfortunately had the need to use an extinguisher on a burning collision I came upon. It was a small fire extinguisher but it kept the flames and heat away from the trapped driver for a few seconds which fortunately was all that was needed until the truck driver came with a larger one and then I was able to reach in through the flames/smoke/heat to unbuckle and pull the driver out through the passenger side of the truck. I have an extinguisher in every vehicle now, not for property saving, but potentially life saving. Those Elements look great, although pricey.

Anything is better than nothing, if you have a big fire there’s not much you can do, but a small unit will be useful to a degree, or to help with the big fire if needed. If you have nothing and end up with a small fire, then what?

Keeping in mind that the fire is always a lot bigger by the time the truck gets there. If you got to it immediately and it was still small you might have a chance with a small onboard extinguisher.

Although the small ones everyone is picturing may put out a very small interior fire, once you open the hood on an engine fire or if it’s an under the dash electrical fire, the odds that you’ll have time to extinguish it is very slim. By the time one of those fires is noticed it’s almost always too late.

You put a serious training into cpr and RIT crews, both of which have limited chances of success. Doesn’t mean it’s not worth the effort.

Those are both potential life saving actions. CPR, when done early and correctly, is often successful and RIT can be in the right situation. A car is just an object, an often a much loved object, but an object nonetheless. You can’t really compare the two. I don’t disagree with attempts to save a car, but don’t put too much money on those tiny extinguishers. At least get a reasonable sized one.

In my S197 had a 1lbs in front of the passenger seat until I put in the 15 - 17 Recaro seats, then moved it to the harness bar in between the seats. Have been doing a little bit of research on S550 mounts. Definitely going to use a 2.5lbs extinguisher in the S550.
