Everything is going fine except when I measured the rotational force on the pinion nut, I get 2-3 ft.lbs. Seems really loose. The Ford manual does not say which ft. lb is correct. From the forums articles I read, seems that 15-25 ft.lbs should be the numbers I should get. I also counted the exposed threads.
When I re-install, should I torque it to get 2-3 ft. lbs or tighten to get 15-25 ft.lbs?

Rotational torque is measured in inch pounds not foot pounds , you will need a dial type torque wrench, 25-30 inch pounds is acceptable, easiest way to do it is mark the pinion nut before removal then tighten to the same spot
Have done hundreds this way without issue

Oops...I meant in.lbs, sorry. So do I torque it to 25-30 in.lbs?

Just keep in mind 1 degree tighter on nut rotation the inch pound torque reading goes way up fast when near set point.

When I built my diff I used this torque wrench, as I recall it was for bike spokes or something.

^^^That's the type I used. I finally just decided to tighten as initially measured at 2-3 in.lbs.

I always set my 8.8” at 18in:lb rotational drag. I have never had any issues

For me, depends on new or used bearings.

I should have clarified, this is always with new bearings and gear sets.

We snug up to 25 maybe a hair more on new
On used stay in the 15ish range.

Good news...Bad news!
Good...job done
Bad...putting tools away, noticed that my in.lbs. torque wrench was a ft.lb one...wtf!
Good...I re-tighten the pinion nut as measured in the initial torque
Bad...I feel old!
