View Full Version : Issue with my supercharger belt

So my original belt was destroyed a few weeks ago, found the belt all shredded and wrapped around the s/c pulley, or what was left of it anyways. Finally found a replacement. Go for a rip today and open the good and half the belt has been shredded off again. Not sure what would cause that. My crank is a 7 inch and the s/c pulley is a stock 3.5 inch from vortech.

Most likely culprit,
poor belt alignment (have you just made changes to the set up?)
belt making contact with a bolt, bracket etc.
belt too loose
belt too tight
loose or seizing bearing in any of the units it passes over
incorrect routing

had that happen on my s/c 86,and it was the idler pulley was worn out.changed pulley and no more belt shredding.
Could also be the tensioner arm pivot is worn. If so, as it cycles from looser to tighter, can actually make the pulley attached to it move the belt in and out of alignment.

What car/engine is in question here?

The first belt took only two days to kill the second belt only one day. It's cutting the belt on the inside, the edge of the belt facing the motor.

When I installed my v3 sci 2yrs ago I was running my serpentine belt like you are over tensioner.I found that I could not put enough tension on supercharger belt.i since changed it.This could be your issue charger belt too loose.

Had this happen with the same kit on a customer car. Exact same thing was happening to his belts.
Ended up being an alignment issue. (Did not do the original blower install).
Had to shim the head unit back to get the proper alignment.
Run into the same thing a couple or three times. Bolt it on as per instructions, belt is out of alignment. Long straight edge off the crank pulley, square the rest of em to it. Can be a tedious task but well worth the results.
Assume you've already quad checked all washers n spacers are in the correct locations?

So run everything off of the crank, in terms of squaring it up and it should solve my issue? Tension I find is ok. Just boggled at how the belt is shearing off on the one side. I guess it's riding the high side of the crank pulling and slicing the belt into thin strips.

Yes but I'm running the belt under the s/c tensioner.

Yes, best to be sure all are as close as possible both in and out plus angle.

It looks like your running a 6 rib belt towards the front of 8 rib pulleys....is that correct? Is your tensioner pulley flat or a slight crown to it? If its crowned and your on the outer edge maybe it's putting a slight twist in it. Maybe it needs to be shimmed out to get the belt in the center or go 8 rib.

The V3sci kits are 6 rib.
The belt shown has actually shed 2 of it's original 6 ribs...

Now that I look at it again...it looks like a 6 rib. Did it cut on the rad side and jump over a few grooves? Must be an alignment problem like suggested by others.

Yea that pic there is of the belt actually been stripped apart. It's a stock 6 rib pulley

Tough to tell by the pics, but it looks like either the idler is in, or the blower pulley is out. I'd toss a washer or two behind the idler pulley, then take the damaged belt and re-install it flipped so the good side is facing out, run the car and see what happens. A few spirited runs should ell you if its gonna come off, letting it idle won't really put a load on it.

That's a good idea not sure how the blower pulley would come out though? I can see the idler being loose.

You can do something for that it you will need more money than the car is worth, better to buy a modded car.

The blower pulley is pressed on.

Yea I figured that much. Well lets hope it's the tensioner. I just don't get it . The s/c is brand new not even 200km on it. How could it be failing now. It should be good to go out the box.

Just checked the tensioner and I can wiggle it ever so little. Could not be more than 2 or 3 mm but it does wiggle a litttle

Its allowed to wiggle a bit, it looks like its not lined up though, did you read my previous post?
Who did the install?
Suggest again, back up and get a straight edge on the crank and measure outwards. Based on the pic, does not look even close. If so, double check your spacers etc, if correct, shim as required.

Definite alignment issues. Vortech's are not bolt on and they just work type of kits. They always need shimming. My JT was way out of wack from new.

Funny you mention that speedtospare because the same shop said that no shimmING is needed and if so somthING else is wrong. Never had to shim one in the history of them installing blowers
Did you get a straight edge long enough to reach from the face of the crank pulley to the blower? Once you have that, easy to find the culprit, biggest challenge in getting everything in line.

Do what Rick says. Even if its out a few mm it can cause problems.

Yeah, and that's why there's a Fox in the laneway that used to religiously throw belts and was installed at a Premiere Vortech dealer...
Rare to see a kit installed outta the box that is anywhere close let alone perfect.

The two Kenne Bell's I had the pleasure of doing way back when were spot on. :)
Sorry, should have said Vortech or similar kit.

Sorry, should have said Vortech or similar kit.
I also kinda cheated with that one as the Kenne is driven via the same belt as crank + accessories...
Not uncommon to see a factory mounted (5.0 pushrod) PS or AC pump a mile outta line or just plain twisted.
