"IONITY, a European EV charging network owned by BMW, Daimler, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, and VW Group (with Audi and Porsche) has announced that prices will be going up over 500% starting January 31 as they transition to a pay-per-kWh system.
Previously, IONITY charged a flat, fixed rate of €8 for a DCFC charging session. This was a good deal if you showed up with an empty battery and filled most of the way. If you arrived with, say, 10% battery remaining, and added 60 kWh during your charging session, then you’d get away with paying about €0.13 per kWh. For context, in France, electricity costs about €0.19 per kWh at home, and €0.24 per kWh at Tesla Superchargers. In Germany, you pay €0.30 per kWh at home, and €0.33 at Tesla Superchargers in Germany.

Starting next month, however, IONITY will be charging users a whopping €0.79 per kWh. (PDF press release). The Audi e-Tron battery is 95 kWh, so if you “filled it up” with 80 kWh, that’s €63.20 to travel probably about 160 miles, give or take. Terribly expensive."

electric cars are toys for the rich

Can't really disagree with you. Currently EV ownership cost is outside the grasp of most consumers.

Affordability of entry, charging network infrastructure, range, and serviceability are the biggest barriers to the electrification of passenger transport. All this talk of the ban of ICE vehicles in the not to distant future is media pandering unless nations and corporations actually work to create more affordable electric cars with range that accounts for rural communities and real commutes and nation wide charging networks.

how do you charge a zero emission car with emission free electricity?
Solar and Wind?
But realistically I see your point.

Also one must wonder the true carbon footprint from producing the batteries, as well as from producing highly inefficient solar and wind farms.

Coincidentally I just watched this video yesterday. Interesting thoughts for sure and yes , ICE is going to stay around a while before anything else happens.

I'm still using as a beer fridge the fridge I bought used back when I started college...35 years ago. Still keeps beer cold after 35 years...and so quiet in my rec room

Spend some time on YouTube watching some Tony Heller videos. Carbon isn't the enemy.

Reducing pollution in all forms is a worthwhile endeavor but focusing on carbon footprint removes treasure from more economical measures that can make a bigger difference. Bjorn Lomborg has compelling arguments on where effort and funds should be directed.

What's the net benefit of total energy, effort, cost of recycling an older car, fridge, air conditioner that still functions but not as efficiently as a new offering?

Subtract that from the energy, effort, pollution to produce a "zero emission" car or high efficiency appliance that has a smaller "pollution" footprint. I suspect my efforts have a greater net benefit to the planet.

Sounds like a rationalization for consumerism to me.

I'll keep my 25 year old + car running efficiently, use my 40 year old fridge, and not replace my functioning 40 year old high efficiency gas furnace.

Lol, I have a 1955 GE fridge in my basement given to me by my brother in law in 1988, as he was given an nice harvest gold fridge. We laugh now as I think he has had 3 or 4 modern replacements since then. I don't think it has consumed much more Hydro than my 5 year old kitchen aid side by side, that seems to have a fan or compressor running everytime I am around it.

Cars aren't the root cause. It's like cutting back on water if you're fat and trying to drop some weight.

If you want a true impact, cut the following:

- Cruise ships
- Shipping container ships
- Flights
- Red meat
- Commute (encourage telecommute when possible)

I've seen several mentions of ICE (internal combustion engine), dose that infer there is also and ECE (external combustion engine)? If so, I want to see pictures of that. ;)
yes. it does
