View Full Version : Let's talk tires for my GT 500

ahh, gotcha

yeah, I have the same tires on mine (Cup 2's), very sticky, not so good in the cold though and they pick up every fucking rock and pebble on the ground LOL, I'm keeping them for track only and will be putting on a set of 4S for the street. Unfortunately they don't make it in a 315 for the rear which is stock size but I'm going just go with the 325, a lot of people doing that with no issues and the tread wear on the 4S is like triple the cup 2 so that will be good at least LOL

Dave I run a Nitto INVO 325 on the rear of mine without any issues at all. Contemplating going wider next time for the street (345) but need to check fitment to ensure they wont poke. A 305/30 front with 325/30 rear on your car would be amazing.

Nitto Invo tires have been around forever now. Tire technology progresses so quickly that better choices are available in the same price range.

What size wheels are you running Fab? Do you have a pic of current setup? Mine already poke out a bit on 11.5" rear on the stock setup, I kinda like that look though so as long as no rubbing I'm cool with it. From what I've read the Nitto runs a little narrower than the Michelin on same size street tires (I know for sure the 555's do cause we measured Matt's 315 vs. my 315 and it was about .5" difference across

A new version of the 555s came out a few years ago, NT555 G2 ... they have decent reviews and test results. The original 555 was getting very long in the tooth as well. I suspect that the Invo is likely due to be updated or replaced at some point, they've been out probably 10 years which is an eternity in the performance tire world.

Are G2 all season or strictly summer or avail in both. Want summer tire. Know where I can get deal?

G2 just means Gen 2 version of that tire and no the triple 5's are NOT all season... And no deals on tires... always expensive!! LOL :D

We can get Nitto through Parkway, but sort of the wrong side of the GTA for you!

I think that DaSilva was selling the brand as well, you could check in with them.

I have F1's on both Mach's they have been amazing tires... one of the highest rated for wet weather as well, but I don't think they come in your size

one of my favourite tread patterns though

Almost all of the Goodyear performance tires are named Eagle F1 with another notation after that, they have about 10 different tires with the designation. The OEM GT-500 tires on your year were the Eagle F1 Supercar I think which are fast wearing but have decent grip ... an older tire that has been surpassed.

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Eagle+F1+Supercar

Dave your F1 GS-D3 were a top rated tire back in the day, especially in the wet as you mentioned. I had a set on my T-Bird SC for a while. They are only made in limited sizes now, and again time marches on and gives us better choices.

True...

and yeah I just went back to check, only two sizes available now (on tire rack anyways)... both for 17 which is fine for new edge cars but not so much for newer models now...

Mav, just get yourself a set of 4S's and be done with it... dual compound, top notch street tire, great on the track as well if you go and decent in cooler temps I'm sure they make them in a size for your beast... they are not cheapest tire by any means but you do get what you pay for according to reviews I've read and people that have used them on street and track... Your a Shelby guy... you can afford it!!!

Hey Dave, I think these are the best pictures I have right now. Rims are SVE SP2 19x10 front and 19x11 rear with a +50 off set to fit flush. Next tire I go with will likely be the wider fitting Michelin PS4S so maybe I will stick with 325 wide.

Hey Mav, I have had both the 555g2 and the INVOs on my GT and I actually prefer the INVO. I found the G2 didn’t hook well unless it was pretty warm outside. Can’t comment on wet as I usually don’t drive it on rainy days.

That said, the PS4S seems to be the tire of choice right now (but more money). Although I have never tried them the new Firestone Indy 500 tires seem to be getting good reviews as well on Mustangs and they are really affordable options.

I believe newbie put those on his black 2014 GT so perhaps he can chime in on his thoughts.

fast Ed
01-23-2020, 10:45 AM
The Indy 500 are great tires for the $$. Have them on my SVO (admittedly a low-powered car compared to modern stuff), and also had them on an Ecoboost demo I had a few summers ago. Pretty good size range they have in that model too. They do tend to be a bit noisier than premium performance tires though, especially on older road surfaces.

^^

I moved the tire discussion from the other thread thanks to a THREAD SABATEUR :stickpoke:- sorry if it feels disjointed.

Fantastic tire on the lower price point segment ,impressed with wet/dry, can’t complain from a dig or roll, ( remember though this is slo turd speed) not douche category and pushed them harder last time at TMP I was very happy.
I think I’m going on my 3rd or 4th season - and slo turd is used pretty much as a family hauler/ daily during driving season.
Not as quiet as preimium - but I’ve driven to New York/ Washington and didn’t hear them over the exhaust.
Nice when warm/ hot - it’s a stone , pebble thrower as well.
I think I’ll probably go for a 2nd set when the time comes; it gets the job done.
All in with install for $948-1000 , cheaper still if firestone running a promotion.

Another premium tire that is almost as good as the Michelin P 4 S is the Continental Extreme Contact Sport:

https://www.continentaltire.ca/car/tires/extremecontact-sport

In many of the larger sizes that would be suitable for S197s and S550s, they can be $50-100 per tire less than the Michelins. I may go with these on my 17 GT, but without a supercharger.

I have 315/35/20 nitto NT05R and I can usually get solid traction in 2nd gear with making 711hp. They are a drag radial. I have got caught in the rain with them and they weren’t horrible as long as you drive appropriately for rain.

I think the 350R might be the only OEM application for 315/30R19, hence the lack of replacement choices. The 325/30R19 is used by Porsche at least, and I think a few others.

More options in a 345/30/19 as well. I believe that Chevy put that size on late model Z06 and Dodge used this size for the Viper. However, Heinz is the only one I can think of running that size tire and I cannot advise if they will poke on an S550. Definitely won’t fit an S197 without serious modifications.

Viper also had a 12" rim though which helps. For the Vette do you mean the brand new c8? I don't think last gen had wires that tide...

Was just going to say for that tire size to work properly it should be on a 12-13" wide wheel, not jammed on an 11 or 11.5".

I would have to agree. 12” wide rim should be the minimum for that size in a 19” 30 series tire. I believe that my 325 rears are the maximum width that should be installed on a 11” rim.

How about a 295 front and 305 rear, that’s what I have on my R spec wheels.
Tires are a bit stretched but I like it and it works on this car.
The R wheel already sticks out of the fenders about 1/2” so depending on the tire manufacturer going to a 325 may be a bit much.
Here are some pics, or you can come by and check it out , it may change your mind.
This is on the oem GT350 super sport tires

NO, you Lunatic!! you don't mix compounds!

least it's no advisable for the track (maybe street is okay if you're not driving like a Lunatic... but I get the feeling that's not you!) LOL jk

but regardless, your rears will wear out much quicker than the fronts as the 'R's' are a much softer compound... better for traction sure, but for lessor period of time, we don't need you whining about tires every two months Sir!

If you are primarily concerned with acceleration grip then yes go with something like the 555R on the back. They mix fine with regular 555 up front as long as you're not pushing really hard through corners. Although the 555R is a softer compound, it also has sidewalls designed for maximizing straight line traction as opposed to other "all-around" performance tires being made for cornering stability.

Are you going to use the OEM PP1 wheels? Aren't they staggered?

They're too heavy and yes they are staggered sizes which is not as useful for a tracked car when you want to be able to rotate front to rear to maximize tire wear. Also have a set of black Fastco FC04 19x9.5" on order. Would prefer 10 or 10.5", but these are only 21 lbs. each and I get a great price on them as a selling dealer when it's for my own ride.

Those are nice wheels. Disappointing that they don’t offer more sizes

So true, can’t believe Ford still puts those rims on those cars. Heavy as cement, and hard to clean as well. Always thought the pp1 package should have came with 285/35/19 on all 4 corners as standard.

Current PP1 tire setup is still undersized IMO and doesn’t capitalize on a rather competent factory performance setup. I can only assume they based tire selection to maximize fuel economy on these V8 cars.

The FC04 is a nice looking wheel, reminds me of the PP2 wheels which mine are replicas of. Would be nice if they offered them in a 19x10 setup.

+ gotta keep performance below other offerings costing a bunch more.
