When we broke the news in January 2018 that the long-lost Bullitt Mustang (https://www.hagerty.com/articles-videos/articles/2018/01/14/mustang-bullitt-found-real-mcqueen) was safe and sound in Tennessee, the story rocked the automotive world. It also ignited speculation about how much the iconic car might be worth if it ever hit the market.
In five months, we’ll know the answer.
The 1968 Ford Mustang driven by Steve McQueen in Bullitt is headed to Mecum’s 2020 Kissimmee auction in January. Company president and founder Dana Mecum made the announcement on August 14 to kick off Monterey Car Week. Mecum says he expects the Mustang to surpass the American muscle car record of $3.5M paid for a 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda convertible (https://www.mecum.com/news/2014/06/17/mecum-raises-the-bar-in-seattle-35-million-for-1971-hemi-cuda-convertible/2377/) at Mecum’s 2014 Seattle auction. The highest auction price for a Mustang to date is $2.2M for a 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake (https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0119-359599/1967-shelby-gt500-super-snake/) at Mecum Kissimmee earlier this year.
Estimating the value of an iconic car like the Bullitt Mustang can be difficult since it’s impossible to know just how much someone is willing to pay for a car that is so ingrained in American pop culture and has never been at auction before—particularly one that was driven by “The King of Cool” in arguably the greatest car chase in movie history. Certainly that number will be in the millions.

What's the "buy it now" price? You know, it needs some body work, paint, new tires. I'l give you $12 grand for it right now. Cash Money!!

Some minor surface rust... can be cleaned right up with WD40. Will be interesting to see what it sells for.

The back story of that car is over-hyped a bit. Many people knew where it was, but the owner had no interest in selling and wouldn't even let people look at the car. He passed away a few years back, and his son has decided the timing was right to re-introduce it to the world and then offer it up for sale.

I read the story last year or the year before, if I remember correctly he said the car was in pieces and they assembled it with new fasteners but tried very hard to keep everything as original as possible. The car is a mess though, has been used and abused, and the owner (or was it his wife?) drove it for a number of years. It still has some welded-on brackets for the camera mounts and stuff, it’s not a really nice car. Great piece of history though, no doubt about that, would be worth even more if he still had the note Steve wrote to him when he wanted to buy the car back.

I wouldn't be surprised if at least a portion of the auction proceeds get donated to the charities that are supported by the McQueen family.

Honestly, over the years I have just become so sick of this type of over hyped crap. IMO that thing is a POS. I am sure it will fetch big money but as a car (which is all it is to me) its as rough as a stucco bathtub.
For the record I hate “patina” as it’s really just rust and the Americans have somehow convinced people that “patina” is cool...rant off.

I have plenty of “patina “on my winter beater, every time I go over a bumpy road some of it falls off ( shrug) by winter’s end I won’t have a tailgate and wheel well

History of the car or not I wouldn’t want it. For the money that it fetches I would rather buy something new and nice.

Never understood the survivor car thing either. I'll take a restoration/resto mod every day.
The new bullitt is 100% about the unique green colour and package for price.......zero to do with Steve McQueen but that's JMO.
Box stock, an early Mustang is about the cool factor of the car itself cause they really don't drive all that well unless modded.

I really don't get the appeal of movie cars. They are usually hacked up, beat up and are often not a real version of the model they are supposed to be.
I guess if you're really rich and need to one up your other rich friends, then have at her.
Hopefully some of the money will find its way to charity.
Meant so much to him, a shame McQueen was not able to buy it.

have to agree these cars from that era took a lot of skill and balls to drive fast and make work - not like todays push button cars - it's a different experience altogether. Recently had a bone stock mopar from '73 and loved driving it as my daily. Not taking away anything from the modern car it's just a different driving experience. As much as I love the resto mods I do appreciate the classics in the true form. This story is kind of fitting because I recently found out my '73 Satelite now belongs to guy who has a fleet of movie cars and my '73 has now been transformed into a taxi and used in film...I will see if |I can get some pics of it!
Consider myself fortunate I get to drive so many different cars year in and year out.

I was able to see this car last year at Sema and as much as I love this year/ model I have to admit it it’s rough as hell. In high school I helped my friend build a 67 that he still owes and paid $100.00 initially for, I wouldn’t bid on it as I would rather have a nice shiner vehicle as well. Can’t say I hate the Patina look as some rat rods and old cars look pretty cool.....but it’s not for everyone.
I have asked my friend for years to let me borrow his 67 - he said “anytime come and get it” ..the problem is he now lives in Georgia and had it fully restored a few years back.....

LOL, yeah I know I don't usually rant like this but just tired of American gouging of the car community in its biggest form. It really ruins the hobby for most of us car guys. Perfect example is what all the Eleanor clones did to 67 fastback values. Now they are so inflated, most who always wanted one can never afford to buy or restore one.
Personally, if I wanted a Bullitt then I would buy a new one. Way more car, comfortable and it goes like hell too! Don't get me wrong, I love a 67 fastback (especially NON-Eleanor GT500s) but I always prefer them in restomod form with as much classic appearance preserved on the outside so it still looks like a 67.
Kinda like this: https://www.classic-recreations.com/shelby-classic-g-t-500cr-specs/

That said, I would actually much rather have an LSX split bumper 70 Camaro with Detroit Speed suspension all round...still my favorite muscle car of all time (and I am a late model Mustang guy!)

Well it looks like American automotive greed wins again... $3.4 million was the number that “won” this dilapidated fastback.

Just another bunch of rich dudes taking the muscle car hobby further out of reach for the average Joe. I guess I really need to hope that someday someone “stars” my car in a movie too. LOL

I think you guys that are saying that this jacks the price on cars are wrong.
The fact that this particular GT390 just sold for 4.3m has no bearing on the Mustang market.
It is a rare piece of automotive history. No the new owner will probably not restore the car and probably won’t drive the car but that’s not what this car is about. If some one buys Rocky’s boxer shorts to hang on a wall in there gym do you think they should wear them. Of course not and you don’t beat off to the Mona Lisa either.
Everything has its place. This car is a car culture icon that should be preserved. I’m sure the new owner has another car or two that they can drive.

Now on another movie car
There is a YouTube guy named Tavarish, he bought the Fast and the furious Lamborghini Murci for what was arguably dirt cheap.
Well below market value for a Lamborghini Murci. He has restored the car and now has a great car for “cheap”.
Do you think that car will ever hold significants like the GT390 from Bullitt?

No - it was driven by Tyrese Gibson - enough said.

No, wasn't a hero car like the Eclipse, Supra, Charger, et all. Car only appeared for a few moments on screen and one action scene. If Freddy went to sell it I'd think it would actually bring less than other comparable LP640 6spd because the money on those seems to be low mile/clean stock examples. His being modded, being shown and hacked by the movie and rebuilt on YouTube probably hinders more than helps value. Good thing he intends to keep it.
