This uber-popular 8% ABV Double IPA has become the stuff of legends. Regarded by some as hands-down the best beer made in America, it is a familiar name on any “best of” ranking list.

My dad is a WW2 Vet, and we are just wrapping up a 2 week WW1/WW2 site tour in The UK, France, Belgium and Amsterdam.
Best beer yet is the Passchendaele, the Heineken Affligium is 6.7%, and of course Heineken have been on the tour.

NOTL for the weekend attending their Sip & Sizzle event (wine & food) - great weather to enjoy the vineyards. The Spring event tends to have more summer wines while the November event has more reds.

I really like the Great Lakes offerings as well. I've also had some of the Side Launch ones too. Actually have one in the fridge at home.
The second one is a limited release from the brewery in my town. It's a 1.9L growler. Had some while I was there on Wednesday so decided it would be my Canada Day beer!

Stopped at FoodTrucknFriday by my office on the way home to grab dinner while the wife chilled a bottle of Niagara wine to pair with the dish of choice: Al Pastors Chicken Box from Alijandro's Kitchen (truck). Marinated slow roasted chicken in a box with rice, mint, Pico de Galo, baked chickpeas, and mixed beans. Drizzled with lemon garlic sauce. Pairing was perfect.

Are you heading there on a wine related vacation or is the area a stop-over while you're there? There are so many wineries out there it's hard to pick and my stops, while enjoyable, doesn't capture all the top ones. Also depends on whether you're there for the wine only or combo of wine/setting.
Most of the Napa wineries have tasting fees between US$25 to US$150 (some are wine tasting only or combo wine tasting/tour) and many of the "smaller" wineries require reservations ahead of time (even for a tasting). Stag's Leap in Napa had a US$45 tasting fee for an estate flight of wines including from $200 to $300 bottles. Luna had a nice patio for tasting/enjoying a glass as well. Sterling is worth a visit also with good wines. Other notables included Joseph Phelps, Duckhorn, Irony, and Black Stallion wineries. Castello di Amorosa was a cool spot with a re-created Italian castle and great views although the wine is just ok. The Napa wineries seemed to have a 2 bottle purchase for them to waive the tasting fee.
We actually preferred the Sonoma and Paso Robles wineries since they are smaller, more intimate, many are family-owned, and less feeling of a "production environment" for tastings. Tastings were either free or in the $10 to $25 range and the ones we went to only had a 1 bottle purchase to have the tasting fee waived. Ridge winery was a nice spot and they took their time, so did Alexander Valley which offered a free tour with barrel tasting in their large wine cave. Woodenhead in Sonoma has a nice spot overlooking the Russian River Valley area although their wines were not as nice as Ridge or Alexander. Next time we will focus more time in Sonoma and Paso Robles and skip Napa (Napa wines are generally "bigger" and require longer cellaring for maturing anyway).
We only intended to bring back 2 bottles each (in our suitcases using 4 inch mailing tubes) but you can see we did not stick to that and had to purchase a Wine Check bag to bring our purchases back on the plane (as checked luggage).
Make sure you book your wine tasting reservations at the Napa wineries in advance (where reservations are required) since we did not and could not get last minute reservations at some wineries.

No, we lucked out with a generous customs officer who let us through. Thought we'd be in for a big bill with a 7-bottle overage but we got waived through. We ended up buying one of these at Mohsin Vineyards to bring everything back safely.

Sorry man - skipped out of work early to do a CBI pickup run across the border and had to get back to the GTA early so popped in there quickly to see what they had in stock to go. Next time - we're booking our NOTL and Twenty Valley wine/food weekend soon (not sure it'll be patio weather then though :-(

Higher Learning through beer:
This weekend stopped in at the Parson's Brewery and picked up a couple of "Westy's", and tried a new beer "Marysburgh Vortex", American Double IPA (8.5%). While I was "sampling" the beer they gave me the story of the "Vortex".
http://postmediaottawacitizen2.files.wordpress.com/2015/01/map-showing-the-marysburgh-vortex-marysburgh-vortex-column.jpg
The Marysburgh Vortex is an area of eastern Lake Ontario with a history of shipwrecks during the age of sail and steam that has encouraged legends, superstitions and comparisons to the Bermuda Triangle. The name describes an area whose three corners are Wolfe Island (Ontario), Mexico Bay near Oswego, NY, and Point Petre in Prince Edward County. Although many legends suggest mysterious circumstances for the sinkings, historical writers have attributed the area's record of shipping disasters to conventional maritime hazards such as bad weather, shifting cargoes, fires, submerged reefs exposed during periods of low water levels, and compass errors due to natural geomagnetic anomalies.
Point Petre is where they launched the Avro Arrow models from and tested the Iroquois engines.

Picked up a couple of new brews from Rouge River:
Rise of the Planet of the APAs (6.0% ABV) 36 IBU (American Pale Ale)

Just had a pre-diner Holy Trinity. Tasty!

They just have the one brew right now (available in a few LCBO locations) but are planning to add others later. I was speaking with the owner at Caledon Day last weekend where they had a tent about their farm, growing their own hops, and also asked him if he'd be interested in trying a blood orange ale (had it in a brewhouse outside Yosemite National Park last summer and it was good - haven't seen it elsewhere yet).

That looks interesting, what other whisky’s do you like as a competitor. I’m not a single malt snob but most of mine are single.
- give this a try you may like it ,mind you it’s not intended to the “ whisky purist”
Usually single is the holy grail of whisky.
I like Chivas 18 yr too
- Direct competitor ? Single? Hmmm hard to say - this blended is different but I like that it seemed smoother, well rounded, balanced?- yes some blended taste like crap.
I would say in my limited drinking Glenfiddich.

even J Black .

After watching a Christopher Hitchens vid where he said there only needs to be one scotch, Johnny Walker Black, I went out and grabbed a bottle. So far it’s the only statement of his I disagree with.
Not. JW fan.
I have tried a few blends I like. Monkey Shoulder comes to mind. I also have a couple of Japanese blends that i like from Nikka.
I may just wait for a whiskey tasting somewhere before committing to a bottle.
If you could attend one of those that would be great idea especially if looking for one of the more expensive bottles.
I agree with you on JW Black not really a fan. I’ve bought Black label but I have a buddy that comes over and he doesn’t discriminate lol.
Monkey Shoulder I think is same ( Grant and Son's ) make Glenfiddich

I love all beers and will try anything but some of these breweries take things a lil too far. I like hops but goddamn.. my buddy gave me a local ontario brew a couple of weeks ago and I wish I remembered the name but it was gross.

Yes, Vermont. They only distribute within 25 miles of the brewery and usually sell out the same day they deliver. We were staying in Lake Placid so I drove over (took the ferry) to Burlington, Vermont on the day of the delivery and picked some up fresh. Fantastic beers both of them.

Just back from a 7 day vacation and the local supermarket was selling 12 San Miguel for 6.99 euros. Not bad for the beach. Didn't find any craft brewers, lots of British beer, but suspect this is due to the number of UK tourists.

Both the gose beers are lemony, and obviously the raspberry one taste like raspberry. Pretty mild at 3.5%. A bit too fruity for my liking, but my wife loved them. The raspberry one tastes like a cooler. The Haze Brigade is a nicely hopped IPA, more my style.

Where did you get that?
And did you take that pic?
Tops in Lewiston NY.
Yes I did take that pic. It’s my back yard. The tree looked great in behind it.

Thrust is back in season, so stopped by the GLB Brewery and pick up a case.

Although Octopus Wants To Fight is now available at the LCBO, decided to pick up a case while at the brewery.
Beer Fridge is well stocked now! :hammered:

Do you know if Thrust is at the LCBO? GLB is a pain in the ass to go to from Niagara

They do not. It's about one of the only GLB brews that they don't carry.
GLB is a PITA to get to from here too, but I was at Sherway Gardens yesterday on business so I popped by.
They had lots in the store, but they sell out of Thrust quickly.

Last time in Mexico we got a couple of bottles of Revolucion.
