I've been looking for a used car for my daughter. She wants a sporty hatch back.

She really likes the Veloster 2012-2013 and as she is her father's daughter, she loving the turbo version but would settle for a non-turbo for the right price and car. The NA cars are a bit of a slouch but she drives stick so at least it'll give the illusion of speed. The turbos are 200hp in a little car but still don't have much torque. They do come with great content for the money.

Our extended family has had good luck with Hyundai products. Mostly Elantras and Sonotas.
Are the Velosters any good?

The other contender is a Mazda 3 Sport hatchback in the 2011- 2013 range. Other than rust issues on earlier models I've never heard anything bad about a Mazda 3.

Thoughts?

probably cant go wrong with either. if its been cared for.

same as you said. only thing I've really heard about the Veloster is under powered but I think I would take that over the Mazda they were HORABLE for rust, unless undercoated.

I know its not in the list but if the budget allows a 2015+ mini is a sweet car. absolutely loving ours. and some we looked at still had factory warranty. but I imagine its a bit more than the other two are for price wise.

Thanks, we looked at a 2012 Mini. She wasn't loving it as much as I expected and I'm not sure that generation was super reliable.

I thought it was cool.

Was going to say that. Every Mazda 3 I have seen has rusted out fenders.

Mini Cooper (2014) has been good for us, but I’m still not sure I would recommend a used one. Although we have only had one mechanical issue (under warranty), any repairs are going to be killer. Fun little go-cart tho.

As others have said rust was a concern of mine with Mazda3, fast forward to 2019 our 2010 Mazda 3 hasn’t rusted at all ( did do the rust check thing) and has been Uber reliable, apart from brake pads, tires, oil changes nothing major. I believe it’s still on the same spark plugs- this summer I’ll replace them.
I will say the 2.0 L we have is thirsty for my taste but sky active wasn’t yet available.

I think I would go for the Mazda 3

is the sport edition the only one that comes in stick? Is that the one that's called the Mazda Speed3? I've heard they are pretty quick!!

After my search recently I went with a used low km 2017 Mazda 3 sedan for my wife.
It’s a blacked out edition with the 2L, auto with a nice leather interior and great stereo/nav.
She likes it a lot.

I picked it over the Elantra, Civic, Corolla I compared it to.

Interested in a 2013 Elantra GLS 6spd with only 26K on it? :) Going back and forth if I should sell.

IDK, there 6 or 7 Elantras in our extended family. I think she'd like to be different.

If you were going brand new I would say the Mazda 3 because they have good incentives, better financing options. But generally, the Veloster seems like the CRX of 2019 so in that sense you have to be willing to take a risk, Hyundai has come a very long way and they are reliable and cheap to own.

Back in 1985 buying a CRX as compared to a Z24 which everyone was buying at the time seemed like a risk, but the CRX was amazing in every sense.

Some years Mazda 3 also have a very bad oil consumption problem, I also helped a family on the QEW last summer when they overheated theirs in traffic.

Consider a Volkswagen GTI too.

We had a new 2012 Mazda 3 Skyactiv and LOVED it. 0 issues in our 4 years of ownership. Also, the 2nd gens don't rust at all like the first gen with the bad quarters.
Mazda all the way IMO.

They also seem to have a better grip on the endless engine issues.

My daughter had a Veloster.... she loved it....I hated it. I'd go for the Mazda.

I had an 09 Mazda6. Best used car I’ve ever bought. Drove it right into the ground with over 300k on it. Super reliable, I didn’t have any of the rust issues and parts were relatively cheap when I did need to fix it.

I vote Mazda 3 or the GTI. Can’t go wrong with VW.

Bought this little guy for my daughter today.

2012 Skyactive 6 sp manual, fully loaded except leather. The mileage is a bit higher than I'd like at 147K but it drives beautifully and is pretty clean for what it is. Price was right and my daughter really liked it.

If the car was cared for in the first 147K, it will live a long life. Congrats!
