View Full Version : Classic Mustang OEM or Restomod?

I'm looking at classics again (I know, I know) and seeking opinions.

Given a 60's mustang, which would you buy and which one would you pay more for, a nicely restored low mileage ride or a well built restomod with engine, trans, diff, steering, brakes, ignition and some suspension, all updated

Assume both cars are high production models, so not overly rare and are very clean.

I prefer restomods that are tastefully done where the spirit of the car isn't broken but driveability and safety are upgraded.

I wouldn't mind a tiny 65 coupe with a somewhat quiet Coyote and 6 speed in it lol

at the very least: modern fuel injection, brakes, and shocks.

ZR had one in the shop (member here?) that comes to mind. Perfect balance of classic look and modern engineering.

I'm always about change and better with old school design and styling - restomod for me a 65 Mustang resto would give me a little boner

Resto Mod, best of both worlds ! I've been trying my best to be a purist with my 66 , not worth it, hard to find parts that are either used or still pieces of shit from the day they were made, etc , puttin a new Edlebroock on my 66 this week , hoping it end some of my grief with that autolite 4100 ! in the end if u wanna drive it , mod it, modern technology just make it run so much nicer !!

I'll add to that list: air conditioning, seat belts, steering, and cooling system. Old stuff looks better, modern tech works better.

Restomod, as long as it's been done properly. IIRC, one that Rick worked on looked pretty but was essentially undriveable as it sat because of terrible suspension and steering geometry. A lot of the "direct fit" aftermarket suspension parts are not nearly so, and then backyard engineering ensues to make them work for better or worse.

^ With new combo of the right parts, drives like a wet dream vs previous show car only stuff. Doing similar set up in another one now.
Drive a good number of both, would not own a stock one, sure cool to look at but driving, well memory is better than the car.

That's what is nice about a stock SVO ... it actually has decent brakes and suspension compared to just about any other Fox! LOL

I would one day (maybe) like to graft a 67/68 Fastback body on to a 2011 & up chassis. Having a 67 Fastback already all I can say is that the cool factor is there but I sure wish it had all the amenities of a new car.

Seems like the restomods win hands down. Not surprising since turning and stopping is kind of important.

I think you nailed it “modern traffic” gotta be nimble to dodge weave and brake unnecessarily , so that your with the flow .

Driving an original sucks, why put yourself through that? Restored or nothing, and yes, much better to buy one than build one, that stuff is very costly......just please don’t get something with a weird engine, like an ecoboost.

Restomod for me. Wish I’d kept my 65 fastback, I would have done it as a restomod.

cheaper yes, but you also inherit what ever hack job may or may not have been done.
