Discman died years ago but it was amazing! One of my first CD's was from Genesis. Invisible Touch.

Never had one, recall the discman being a real big deal all of a sudden in grade school though.

I guess it went viral.

the guy who originally designed it was hesitant to issue it. he was concerned it would turn isolate people from interacting with each other.

The "guy"? Which guy? Masaru Ibuka (Sony Founder and Chief Advisor), Akio Morita (Sony Founder and Honorary Chairman), or Kozo Ohsone (general manager of the Sony Tape Recorder Business Division)?

"This is the product that will satisfy those young people who want to listen to music all day. They'll take it everywhere with them, and they won't care about record functions. If we put a playback-only headphone stereo like this on the market, it'll be a hit." - Akio Morita, February 1979, Sony Headquarters
Morita said people won't care about the record function, not that they won't care about anything.

Somebody might of said it isolated people from interacting with each other, but can't find anything that it was the "guy" that designed it.
I think you are thinking about Robert Oppenheimer who invented the atomic bomb and was hesitant to use it ....because it would cause people to be dead.
