Anyone have any experience repairing an LCD tv (either at home or technician)? Cost to repair?

My neighbour has an older model 46" Sony Bravia LCD tv and it just started showing the vertical lines on half the screen as shown below.

A google search indicates that a possible cause could be the T-con circuit board. Not sure if there are shops or technicians who repair/replace these - anyone successfully deal with a similar issue?

Thanks!

I had a problem with an older 46” Panasonic plasma, did the diagnostic on it and apparently it needed a circuit board (there was like 4), priced it out at $200 for the board and just decided to sell it to some dude that buys old TVs, I think I got $40 for it.

problem is for what you can buy a tv for anymore (as long as your not out for the newest best thing)

id expect at least a couple hundred bucks for the board, and between 50 and 100 for the repair. plus your tax.

unless you like to tinker and want to give it a go. biggest problem with a lot of the electronic stuff is unless your an authorized repair place they wont give you any diagnostic info, like Ponyryd said there will be multiple boards and narrowing down the problem one isn't always easy

This is why I never pay for an extended warranty on TV's.....they are so cheap now, you might as well just get another. Sad, but the days of those Tube based TVs that lasted a LONG time (in most cases)...and weighed a ton!, are long over.

I've been fortunate so far.....my TV's have generally lasted more than 5 yrs. I purchased the last Plasma model made by Samsung (replaced a SONY 46" Rear projection LCD that last a long time). It's coming up on 3 or 4 yrs. old now.

Thanks guys - I thought that might be the case. I may offer to tinker with it if I can get my hands on a cheap T-con board (likely culprit) and see if that works...if the unit is going to get thrown out. I'll open it up this weekend and get the circuit board model number if they let me.

Just remember the repair man moto. Hit it with a hammer, If that doesn’t work your problem is probably electrical.

Try vacuuming the back of the set or use some canned air to dislodge any dust that may be in there. We did this with one tv we had and it solved the problem.
Worth a try.

Good chance you may not be able to get new parts from the manufacturer.

Parents had that problem with a 47" Toshiba Regza tv.
Service guy that was supposed to come the next day calls in the morning and says "sorry I can't get parts for that tv anymore, look on e-bay for used parts".

Said it was probably the main board but who knows for sure.
There were some used parts online at the time, but the tv wasn't worth it so in the garbage it went.

Sad to say but like others have stated it’s just not worth repairing. Bring to your local electronics recycling depot and buy a new one.

Has he tried unplugging the tv for about 30-60min, to see if it simply resets itself?
I had an issue with my LG where I was getting lines on the screen. I unplugged it, took the back cover off to see if anything blew. Couldn't find anything, thought to myself it's a goner. Put the cover back on, plugged it back in. No more lines, it's been 2 years now.

We used to just give the old B&W a good smack on the side of the TV.

Thanks - ^^ that's essentially what I was going to do if she will let me open up the tv.

As mentioned above, part availability at a reasonable price (if even available) may be the issue....but if I can find a board under $100 may be worth a try (or just unplug/re-plug the connectors on the board to make sure everything is seated ok - done it with laptops/PCs before so shouldn't be too hard if it comes apart easily enough).

I ran into this with a customers medical device this week, took apart all the connections, spray cleaned everything with contact cleaner( I use Nu Trol brand) and it cleared the issue. Didn't take an after photo, only before.
