So my new Coyote developed the tick yesterday

You know the BBQ igniter sound at random from 1500 to 2500 rpm not under load.

Anyway I'm sure it's not a bearing or piston slap. But in the event I'm wrong and it goes boom I will either LS swap it (even if it's under warranty) or get rid of it and my lifetime Ford love affair is done.

I expect noises from my fox that has noisy roller rockers but if I put my pushrod 5.0 to stock it won't make any noises from the crankcase.

Big shout out to dasilva for helping out trying to discover WTF is going on with the thing. It's amazing that this level of service still exists in 2019 which is rare these days.

did you hear it before or after the oil change? just curiosity on my part - i recently changed my oil - one thing I discovered is 10 U.S. quarts doesn't take it to the full line on the stick (i purchased U.S. oil did the change myself) I did not add anymore oil than 10 quarts - When i purchased my car i added one litre to the oil that was in the engine. The car had 5000K on it when i purchased it - The added litre took me to the add line on the stick - I did not add anymore oil and ran the car to 8500k then changed the oil. during that 3500k the oil level in the car did not drop. With the new oil i have no tick - there is noise i attribute to pulleys and the sound carries to the the back of the engine as the undercarriage appears to be well designed for decent aero. all my noise comes from the front externals of the engine which leads me to believe it's pulleys and belts - no upper engine internal noise.

The noise is too intermittent and stable to be anything serious. Lots of frantic stories online about bearings, rod knock, piston slap and new engines after a bunch of work done at the dealerships. However I doubt this will end as one of those stories... Maybe it's a hint for me to just boost the stupid car and see what happens LOL Wife won't agree to that and I only got 2 more seasons to go with it, after that it's either a Tesla S or a Porsche Panamara.

Just an idea, did you replace with OEM oil filter, the same filter that was used when wasn't making noises...I don't know why but some vehicles only like certain oil filters, otherwise they make noises...just an idea.

From all the hoopla I've read the tick comes after the first oil change - I don't have any knock but I've seen videos with the knock noise. I believe the knock could be from a combination of things but likely cheap fuel, cheap oil, and extended oil changes and maybe a ton of abusive driving. I chose an oil based on its ingredients and high heat a sheer value - the manual recommends a blend I didnt like that idea. If the tick is coming after the first oil change it makes me wonder what the factor put in. I'm thinking it has something equivalent to a break in oil out of the factory or a mor pure synthetic with higher moly and zinc levels. I would have to guess a cheaper oil may cause noise from the cams that may give off a tick noise - just my guess. So far for me no tick will continue to use quality oil and 94/to avoid any preignition and knock.

I did give the filter a lot of consideration. For know I'm going with High quality quaker state filter but may move to something different for the next oil chnage...

I'm thinking of sending a sample into a lab, but I'm unsure if mine still has the original oil in it as the odometer had 5k and that may not be an original reading with computers and all their wonders....just saying...lol

5w20 is for increasing MPG right? Less parasitic drag on the internals.

Anyway, yes to Ford filter. I may do my next oil change so I can take the time to cut open the oil filter and look for signs of issues which I highly doubt. I also ordered some CeraTec which a lot of people claim stops the noise.

I wonder if these engines require additional work to prime the system. Don't they have some sort of oil sprayer nozzles or something to cool down the pistons? I wonder if that stupid tick sound is just air getting trapped or something stupid? It's so random that it doesn't seem to coincide with anything but it is coming from the long-block I'm sure. And I've been around Dodges and Chevys enough to know what rod knock sounds like LMAO.

I think my 2011 had the same issue albeit less prominent. Plus I'm very sensitive to noises, to me a car at this price-point shouldn't sound worse than a 30 year old Hyundai. Kind of turning me off to Fords to be dead honest. I'm just hoping that if there is a serious issue, it really breaks while still under warranty. I don't have time to deal with dealership warranties that will keep the car for a week or so, change the timing chain or other unrelated issue only to have a 16 year old drive the piss out of the car and wreck something else like the 6 speed, only to have the same problem if not worse and eventually another 2 or 3 weeks to dump a new shortblock in. <- anyway that's just me thinking worst case and I'm not that worried about it happening, just feel facetious this morning.

With so many engines developing a "tick", has there not been any engines fail due to the tick?
Simple failure mode analysis would be to run it until it breaks.

Typical Ford Engineering solution will be to develop a white noise generator to cancel out the tick.
Don't fix it, add something to counter it.

I don't think there are many catastrophic failures for sure and those who claim there are they've suffered most likely an unrelated issue. There's a point where there'd be a fix and some sort of recall if tick == failure. Thankfully the Borlas help to reduce the tick noises a little LOL Not a ford fix but still a good one.

I'd recommend getting an oil sample off to blackstone labs in Chicago......cheap way to find out if there is indeed excessive metal wear going on in your motor.

LOL... looks like Ford publicized that this is a "normal" noise. My guess it has something to do with tolerances and break-in juice in the oil from factory.

Not to be confused with the 2018 issue, what my turd has has been known since the start of the Coyote, trucks get the tick too.

I run 10w30 full synthetic oil from Canadian tire in mine with a Ford filter. Also, have a JLT passenger side oil catch can.

Steve just try using the heavier weight oil as a fix, it may work.

Don’t believe I have any issues yet and I plan to “enjoy” my 5.0 very much on May 13th at TMP. So the only tick I am worried about is coming from the stopwatch as I need to get better lap times. LOL

My old 2017 had “the tick”. Had it into Ford twice. They said it was no problem. Sorta glad I traded it in for a new one, and I hope it stays tick free. But then I haven’t had the first oil change yet. Keeping my fingers crossed.
