On Sunday im drive my stang to my mother's that lives alone an hour away, as do i and legal as we both live alone. Using up winter fuel and gave bunch stuff to legitimately have to do for her like drop off grocery, retorque tires, install window air conditioning etc...still nervous as hell getting pulled over...like $750 ticket if the wish...but im legal...

To me, your 100% ok driving to your Mom's but in interest of not being hassled daily driver might be prudent.

I'm torn on this on one hand i want all the city people that have been driving back and forth threw all this to either just stay the fuck in the city or go to their cottage quarantine for the two weeks and then stay there, driving back and forth is idiotic.

on the other hand I've looked at the statistics and EVERY place in the world world that locked down but didn't close boarders and has failed at distributing vaccines is seeing a huge third wave. all the places that did not lock down had more spread of the original virus and are getting hit less hard by the variances even if they don't have a strong vaccine roll out. the stats don't lie, that's the governments job.

Doesn't matter what you think or what I think. If we don't come together and do the same thing, as one, we will never ever kick it, no matter what we do.
We can't have half the population doing 1 thing, and the other's going... "no thanks, i'mma keep doing my own thing."

I clearly haven’t looked at as many statistics as you have, but I haven’t caught so much as a cold, let alone a flu over the last year and a half (that’s a first). So, at least in my case, washing hands, masks, and staying the F* away from people has worked.

unfortunately you cant take one persons experience and call it a success.

you have to consider all factors. even if it saved lives from Covid but caused bankruptcy's and increase in deaths from other means then its not a success.

the problem now is the variances are more deadly to a younger population, a populations that had extremely low risk to the original virus. the lockdowns are a direct cause for people dyeing now that if they would have been sick last year but would not be dead.

there are already experts warning about what your saying. it may seem like a good thing that you have not had so much as a cold this year, but every year colds and flu's adapt and change you immune system constantly upgrades and changes so adapt to them. if you remove that steady adaption your now at risk of catching something that has changed so much your body doesn't recognize it. be prepared to be sicker in the near future than you ever have before.

this is the well know science that our "experts" are ignoring.

Pretty much all the police forces across the province are making this statement - see this Twitter thread. I don't think the intention of the new measures were for random stops as the reasons to be out are pretty broad in the Act - maybe in the wee hours of the night when nothing is open but then that will look like a RIDE stop. Looks like some follow-up changes are pending to clarify/pullback (possible) these powers on paper and lessen the restrictions on outdoor activity.

Idiots like these are part of the problem - not many masks in this crowd. They had another in Clifton Hill near the Falls today and same thing....bunch of anti-maskers and likely anti-vac'ers too. I hope licence suspensions go along with the tickets (if not paid on time).

Announcement tonight. Newbie can go out again......

Ontario reversed course on sweeping new police powers Saturday, just one day after Premier Doug Ford announced the measures that triggered a swift and furious backlash.

Officers will no longer have the right to stop any pedestrian or driver to ask why they’re out or request their home address, Solicitor General Sylvia Jones said in a written statement on Saturday evening.

Instead, she said, police will only be able to stop people who they have reason to believe are participating in an “organized public event or social gathering.”

As the number of people infected with COVID-19 in hospital reached record levels, Ford tweeted that another of the measures would also be reversed.

“Ontario’s enhanced restrictions were always intended to stop large gatherings where spread can happen,” Ford said. “Our regulations will be amended to allow playgrounds, but gatherings outside will still be enforced.”

Civil libertarians and pundits attacked new anti-pandemic restrictions announced Friday by Ford as misguided, saying the added police powers aimed at enforcing stay-at-home orders were overkill.

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association welcomed Saturday’s reversal.

“The new order rationalizes and narrows the unconstitutional Friday standard. The new standard is also tied to a public health objective, and avoids arbitrary detention,” said Michael Bryant, executive director of the CCLA.

Ahead of the reversal, large and small police forces across the province said they had no intention of exercising their newfound powers.

Andrew Fletcher, chief of the South Simcoe Police Service, said officers would only act on complaints. Police forces from Thunder Bay to Ottawa to Toronto and Woodstock expressed similar positions.

So for some reason my new Sony tv wouldn’t play titles from Prime Video using the native tv app, I can choose a title but it wouldn’t play them. I could watch Amazon using my Xbox but not the tv. The tv is wired using Ethernet cable. However, if unplugged the Ethernet cable and used wifi, Prime Video plays titles. So I went into my router and added the wifi and wired Mac addresses to the list and gave them specific IP addresses and turned on dual WAN. Works fine now with a wired connection. So frustrating.

What kind of noise you getting from them? So far, sets we've installed have been dead nutz quiet on drilled n slotted or plain rotors, on Mustang or daily driver.

Really...huh. I thought it was the drilled/slotted rotors(from new) causing a rumbling sound on braking. Not loud but, noticeable. I have the fronts off now and will take a closer look for anything unusual.

My eldest daughter dropped a bit of a bomb on us a few weeks ago. She's decided she wants to travel to South Korea and teach English for a year or two. She started looking at options and signed back an offer to start at a school in Gwangju in August once she has her teaching visa.

I know this will be a great life adventure for her but I can't help but feeling a bit hollow inside since she accepted the offer and this started to get real.

Being a parent is a balance between holding on and letting go I guess.

Oh boy Rogers.

Rogers Communications Inc. is offering customers a credit after a massive nationwide wireless outage left millions without voice calls, texting and data service for several hours on Monday.
The company says a credit equivalent to Monday's wireless service fee will be applied to a future bill.
Rogers says the credit will be done automatically and no action is required by customers.

I've worked it out that including purchase price, modifications, maintenance, insurance and gas the car cost has cost about $3800 a year to have as a hobby. Which is fairly reasonable all things considered, I guess.

Also, the spreadsheet is a locked Google doc and if anyone asks I paid $8,000 for the car and haven't spent more that $5,000 total on it...

Nope. It's all back together now, job takes 3x longer when I do it because it always becomes "I'll clean this while its out, I should paint this bracket, may as well order new hardware" etc.

All thats left is a MEGA detail. Front end of the car felt like sand paper and has a bunch of swirls from all the winter projects going on. Clay and full polish/sealant coming this weekend hopefully and then its almost ready for the season.

Fuck.

Ontario plans to increase penalties for speeding, stunt driving and other traffic violations, saying it has seen a spike in the offences since the pandemic hit.
The government introduced legislation Monday that would, among other things, increase vehicle impoundment times and lengthen licence suspensions.
Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney said the Moving Ontarians More Safely Act sends a clear message to drivers.

<iframe name="fsk_frame_splitbox" id="fsk_frame_splitbox" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: initial; border-style: none; outline: 0px; font-size: 28.8px; line-height: 1.6; vertical-align: baseline; width: 603px; height: 0px;"></iframe>

“Driving is a privilege and those that threaten the safety of others have no place on our roads,” she said.
The legislation would see roadside vehicle impoundment increase from seven days to 14 days, and roadside driver's licence suspensions extend from seven days to 30 days.
It also introduces escalating post-conviction licence suspensions, up to a lifetime ban for a fourth infraction.
It would also lower the threshold for laying street racing charges for those travelling 40 km/h or more above the posted limit on roads where the speed limit is less than 80 km/h.
The government said stunt driving offences have been on the rise since 2015, with a large spike seen last year.
Mulroney said fewer motorists on the roads during the COVID-19 pandemic encouraged more people to drive at excessive speeds.
“Unfortunately, many drivers took these open roads as an invitation to put their foot down on the gas pedal,” she said.
Police laid 796 stunt driving charges in Toronto between March 1, 2020 and Dec. 31 2020, an increase of 222 per cent over the same period in 2019, she said.
Roadside driver's licence suspensions for street racing increased an additional 52 per cent between March and August 2020 compared to the same period in 2019, Mulroney said. Nearly five per cent of drivers suspended during that period had one or more previous suspensions in the last five years, she added.
In another example reported Monday, police in Perth County said they had charged a man from Seaforth, Ont., after he was allegedly clocked at driving above 170 kilometres an hour in an 80 zone in West Perth.

Hey guys. I need a professional opinion here. How and where do you usually check a service history of a vehicle before making a deal (online, official dealer?). I had my car for almost 10 years now and i think its a time for a change. I found few decent options and would like to do a VIN check now. Can someone recommend a reliable source? (Australia)
Update: found one - https://www.quickrevs.com.au/revs-check-nsw. Someone on this forum recommended it and i am very grateful for this, works well, easy to check and not expensive at all. Thanks to the guys who spend their time sharing so much useful information and ideas!

Well last year I swapped my '07 to bigger '11 GT brakes with everything new on every corner and the supposedly better Bullitt brake pads. I can say I have been underwhelmed at best. I decided to switch those Bullitt pads out for a set of EBC red stuff. Wow. What a difference. Only about 50km on them so far. so not even bedded in yet. The initial bite is amazing. I'll never switch back. If anyone is looking for a set of Bullitt Ford FR/RR pads I have a set with only about 1000 km on them.

You could also look into getting a set of G Lock brake pads.
Frank in BC will be able to tell you the combination of pads to run that best fits your needs.
However, the price on these pads are almost double to what a set of EBC's will be. (at least for my car it was about double)

Thanks!! I’ll check it out- looking at street but capable for couple of track days - if we get a chance this year.

Just checked - nothing coming up for my year unless 2011, 2012 is the same for my year.
Besides nothing seems to come up unless I switch pads for track then street

IMO, much like tires, not easy finding a dual-purpose brake pad. What’s good for the street, may not be great for the track, and vice versa.

OEM Ford pads on the street, and G-Lock pads at the track have worked well for me.

Is it enough to offset the loss in income tax revenue?

Sales tax only accounts for about 10% of tax revenue.
While income tax accounts for about 50%.

And while they may enjoy a bit more sales tax, I’m sure they don’t welcome the associated inflation.

Gabe

I agree with Don, the government has been hemorrhaging money for the last 14 months, a 13% share on whatever % increase in some markets is hardly enough to pay attention to when talking about the government debt/ spending and tax revenue. Income tax is the obvious major money maker, but even if we keep the topic on consumer spending and the associated tax revenue how much less fuel has been used in the last 14 months, less money spent at restaurants, on clothing, activities etc.

It’s not missing the point, it’s understanding economics. The government has limited tools in controlling inflation (i.e lowering prices). It’s main tool is controlling the interest rates. And with interest rates already about as low as they can go, the government has little room to play with.

What would you have the government do to lower prices?

If it's a global supply chain issue with both lumber and the chemicals used, I'm not sure what the government can do in a free market/capitalism based economy? All commodities are on their way up - BofA today projected copper prices are expected to double so inflation will come in may waves based on supply/demand mis-match and uptick in consumer spending (pent-up demand) when things start to open up again.

Simple mismatch of demand and supply right now which will take some time to correct - the folks that really need the materials for their own supply chains (not retail, where demand is also up) are bidding up the prices by trying to lock in their cost through commodities futures.

Red-hot lumber prices ease pressure on Trudeau to reach softwood deal with U.S.

You know these are strange times in the Canadian forest industry when lumber futures are hotter than bitcoin.

In the two decades until 2020, Canadian forest companies shed capacity and jobs faster than a champion lumberjack could saw through a sturdy Western white pine. Once the country’s dominant resource industry, the forest products sector shrank dramatically as newsprint consumption crumbled and the 2008 U.S. housing crash took a chainsaw to lumber prices.

Lumber is suddenly on fire, however, with U.S. housing starts hitting pre-crash 2006 levels and as consumers spend savings accumulated during the COVID-19 pandemic on home renovations instead of travel. Lumber futures for May delivery soared to a record of more than US$1,600 per thousand board feet on Tuesday on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange – about four times the average price fetched prior to the pandemic.

Most Canadian producers that supply the Western spruce, pine and fir (SPF) grades preferred for framing new houses slashed sawmill capacity in the decade before the pandemic and cannot increase production fast enough to satisfy surging demand. Soaring lumber costs have added upward of US$30,000 to the price of a new home in recent months, leading the U.S. National Association of Home Builders to call on President Joe Biden to scrap countervailing and anti-dumping duties on Canadian lumber imposed by the former Trump administration in 2017.

In the current bull market, the duties hurt U.S. consumers far more than lumber companies. Large Canadian-based producers such as Canfor Corp. CFP-T +1.85%increase
and Resolute Forest Products Inc. RFP-T -2.42%decrease
have not had it this good in more than two decades and are practically drowning in cash. Their share prices have skyrocketed in the past year and investors are piling into lumber stocks in hopes of riding what many see as a rising wave as supply bottlenecks drive wood prices even higher.

Vancouver-based Canfor reported first-quarter net income of $428-million, a nearly $500-million turnaround from a $70-million net loss in the same period in 2020. Montreal-based Resolute earned $87-million in the first quarter, up from a $1-million loss a year earlier, as juicy lumber profits helped offset a continuing decline in the company’s newsprint business.

If anything, the lumber boom has reduced the political pressure on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to push for a new softwood lumber deal with the Biden administration. With lumber prices more than tripling in the past year, duties averaging around 9 per cent are practically a rounding error. Canfor’s duty was reduced to 4.62 per cent from 20.52 per cent last December by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Resolute faces a stiffer 20.25-per-cent duty.

Former Canadian trade official Eric Miller believes a new softwood deal is currently a lower priority for the Trudeau government than negotiating with the Biden administration to prevent a shutdown of Enbridge’s Line 5 natural gas pipeline by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer or to exempt Canadian companies from the Buy America provisions of the new President’s multitrillion-dollar stimulus and infrastructure programs.

Translation.

it helps Trudeau because they don't have to bother negotiating. It helps biden because he blames the increase on EVil Trump tariffs. It helps the rich relators, and contractors because they make more money of the increase in their percentage based markups. it helps the rich multinational companies who are making bank of the increases, it doesn't bother the rich or lucky "work" from home people who can afford the extra cost for the new deck. but is screws the low income or average person who has bee saving for a project, or wants to buy their fist home and cant afford to absorbed the extra cost.

it just bothers me how some people are quick to hate on the evil small business person for just trying to scrounge a living. some of who have been fined during this pandemic because the government is "cracking down on price gouging" but so many are quick to justify the rich mega companies getting richer.

Is that the takeaway on a decade long (or more) structural supply/demand issue that's underpinning bidding wars now? It's likely any government in place now would focus less on this since they have limited ability to change it in the next 12+ months (takes longer to build new processing infrastructure) versus focusing on other more pressing issues like the threat this week for the Enbridge line to be shut down in the US which would interrupt the flow of oil to markets in the south or getting a tax/duty exemption for Canadian products in cross-border trade which can have immediate effect. The demand/supply issue is capitalism/free markets at work and it will resolve itself over time - that's what happens in capitalism. Do we not like that now?

The way I see it. It’s not a supply and demand issue.

Lumber has been classified as essential and was never shut down.
Lumber mills are mostly automated and don’t run large staff factory’s like they used too. There for were not largely impacted by covid staff restrictions

Yes there will be some slow down and some increase in demand. But not anywhere near what is causing the rise at 4 times the rate a year ago.

There is political factor and benefit gain as well as people making stupid amounts of money taking advantage of pandemic conditions.

That is not capitalism. That’s cronyism.

If people don’t believe this then fine. But why has other building supplies not seen the same 400% increase while dealing with the same supply and demand issues.

Your right the lumber issue has been a long standing POLITICAL issue. That just backs up why the current increase is about politics and money and not justified via supply and demand.

Demand has been going down since the crash in 2008 and capacity has been shrinking at an absolute rate so it's not just automation that's reduced employment but maintained output capacity. And yes, softwood lumber has always been a political issue due to the employment and resource components but aggregate sector output is lower due to structural demand trends over the past 12-13 years. Here is an example from pre-pandemic that highlights where supply/demand was and was going back in 2019.

Two more Canadian lumber mills shut down, hundreds more laid off
By Robert Dalheim September 16, 2019 | 12:19 pm CDT

CANADA - Ontario-based Kenora Forest Products (KFP) and British Columbia's Teal-Jones will both shut down production because of weakened lumber markets.

KFP's two-week shutdown will begin September 23. Staggered layoffs have already begun and more than 115 workers will be affected. Kenora Miner & News reports the curtailment is a result of weakened lumber markets both domestically and internationally, as well the U.S.-imposed softwood lumber duties. More than 95 percent of the company's lumber is destined for the U.S.

Once again citing weak markets, Teal-Jones will shut down its harvesting operations on the coast of British Columbia. CBC News reports that a "substantial" number of employees will be out of work.

British Columbia - Canada's largest lumber-producing province - exported just over 514 million board feet of lumber to the U.S. in October 2018, down from 645 million board feet from the same time 2017. It has also seen more than 20 mill closures and curtailments. Many Canadian lumber leaders have taken a hit - including West Fraser, Canfor, Interfor, and Conifex - and have either shut down plants or restricted production, with West Fraser and Canfor curtailing production more than once.

All cited challenging lumber markets, high log costs, log supply constraints, falling lumber prices, and U.S. import tariffs as factors.

Softwood lumber import tariffs of around 21 percent were levied onto Canada last year. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) told MarketWatch that those tariffs are restructuring the entire lumber global supply chain - incentivizing U.S. buyers to import from overseas rather than ship lumber across the Canadian border.

When I search and read articles regarding the softwood “shortages” they mostly refer to logistical and transportation issues. And not a physical shortage of wood.

The lumber industry isn’t the only industry struggling with transportation.

I have freezers that have been in back order since last fall when then come in I don’t charge the customer 4 times what they are worth.

Why is the lumber industry the only one bending consumers over!

Nature of supply chain is different than for gypsum, etc., for example, which can be stockpiled more efficiently from the mines and production can be ramped up more easily than with E2E timber/lumber...plus the new build demand. I can see steel being an issue as well given the relative fixed capacity with the plants (although they may not have been operating close to capacity pre-pandemic so may have had a buffer). Outside of construction other sectors are being affected by macro supply/demand misalignment as well (eg. semi-conductors; consumers pay more via the end product).

Stascan report up to about 2007 which shows the industry was already in trouble due to falling prices and demand (Canada and US) except for a short uptick in the US before the big crash, and we know the decade that followed saw the construction industry south of the border fall off a cliff which means the companies had to get underperforming assets off their balance sheets.

Our steel-based car parts might be pricey into 2022....might be time to short steel.

After bottoming out around $460 last year, US benchmark hot-rolled coil steel prices are now sitting at around $1,500 a ton, a record high that is nearly triple the 20-year average.
Steel stocks are on fire. US Steel (X), which crashed to a record low last March amid bankruptcy fears, has skyrocketed 200% in just 12 months. Nucor (NUE) has spiked 76% this year alone.
While "scarcity and panic" are lifting steel prices and stocks today, Tanners predicted a painful reversal as supply catches up with what she described as unimpressive demand.
"We expect this will correct — and often when it corrects, it over-corrects," said Tanners, a two-decade veteran of the metals industry who authored a report last week headlined "Steel stocks in a bubble."

I was waiting for some rims to go on sale but the price keeps going up. And folks here have talked about shortages of rotors and paying more for rotors too.

I know my brakes are grinding, I’m waiting for the correction in price!!

Wasn’t the rims already manufactured?? What gives?? :)
Why the increase in price??( because they can?) lol

Scarcity - there's nothing coming behind it to refill the shelves (or a lot less) so sales are going to go down so you have to hike your margin on what you have left to make up the difference. Kind of like our real estate market - highest bidder gets the product. Which of those words describe this....

WTF!!!

The number of parties and events still being held in Toronto amid the lockdown is "concerningly high," leading hundreds of people being hit with a $750 ticket this week alone, police say.
According to police, more than 296 charges (http://torontopolice.on.ca/newsreleases/49829) were laid between April 30 and May 6 after police busted gatherings at places like condos, short-term rentals, closed bars and restaurants.
Sixteen criminal charges were also laid during that period, police said.

<iframe name="fsk_frame_splitbox" id="fsk_frame_splitbox" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" allow="autoplay" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: initial; border-style: none; outline: 0px; font-size: 28.8px; line-height: 1.6; vertical-align: baseline; width: 603px; height: 0px;"></iframe>

In one case, police said they attended a noisy party, in the Bloor Street West and Dundas Street area, and found 14 people inside a house. Officers charged everyone in attendance under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act and Reopening Ontario Act and dispersed them.

Check all your intake and charge tube connections. If shot a plug out you'd have heard a noise, and you would be able to pop the hood and feel a coil is totally loose. Unless you did a 3 to 2 mis-shift I doubt a new motor is needed.

I’ve had the charger tube pop before and that was the first thing I checked. But the rough ride is totally different. When the tub pops off the engine doesn’t get air so it struggles. This doesn’t do that, I have a major lose of power but the car drives. I didn’t bother looking at the plugs and stuff because I don’t know what I’m looking.

You ever been in the garage consuming some cold snacks while starring at your car, and wonder "what's in that cabinet again?" . Then open the cabinet and forget you had a metric fuck ton of spare parts you are holding on to for??????????

So I’ve been going back and forth on which pads to buy. I settled on the EBC red stuff. I called around and I was getting prices for like 190$ just the front pads.

I said let me check on Amazon. I scored brother front and rear pads shipped to my door for 215$ all in. I hate Amazon but I couldn’t say no.

Yup, sometimes Amazon prices are better. Got my front and rear rotors from Amazon as I kept getting Amazon gift cards for my birthday and Christmas. If I had bought the rotors from Rockauto I would have paid too much for shipping as rotors are heavy. So got them from Amazon with prime free shipping and they actually shipped out of Wisconsin.

I got my EBC Red stuff pads from Amazon as well. No one could even touch their price. However when I ordered new Koni STR-T struts and shocks I got them cheaper from Tdot performance. Sadly they only had the struts so I had to get shocks from Amazon. Tdot was here in 1 day. Amazon took 5 days. Both Free shipping
