Well, my builder in all his great wisdom didn't put vapour barrier on the ceiling or walls, (walls that attach interior walls are spray foamed) the bedroom above the garage does get cooler than the other rooms (cold zone below it) although the floor and all duct work to that room is spray foamed it is still cooler in the winter.

So im gutting it. fully insulating, hopefully get somewhere near r50 in the ceiling, install my garage heater that has been sitting waiting.

new tool boxes, work benches, over head storage....

We are expecting our second child in april so im getting all my projects out of the way now.

St. Jude Medical Inc on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against short-selling firm Muddy Waters and cyber security company MedSec Holdings Ltd, saying they intentionally disseminated false information about its heart devices to manipulate its stock.

St. Jude’s shares fell sharply on Aug. 25 after Muddy Waters, run by Carson Block, said it had taken a short position in company’s stock after uncovering security flaws in its devices.

Block said last week his firm’s position was motivated by research from MedSec, which asserted that St. Jude’s heart devices were vulnerable to cyber attacks and were a risk to patients. MedSec has acknowledged that it would share in gains from Muddy Water’s short investment.


Short-sellers borrow shares and sell them in expectation the price will fall. When it does, the short-sellers buy back the shares, return them to the lender, pay borrowing fees and pocket the difference.

St. Jude said it had filed the lawsuit to protect the reputation of its implantable pacemakers and defibrillators, which are used to regulate heart rhythm or treat cardiac arrest. It is seeking damages and for the defendants to give up any profits they made off their investment.

The lawsuit said Muddy Waters had created a short-selling scheme meant to secure a quick and illegal financial windfall. It was not immediately clear how big the short-seller’s position was or how much it may have made when St. Jude’s stock fell.

A Muddy Waters spokesman responded to the lawsuit in an emailed statement that “It is not unusual for a company like this to try to silence its critics and we are always prepared to vigorously defend our right to criticize a company that puts its profits before its patients.”

Muddy Waters alleged last month it and MedSec found security flaws in St. Jude’s Merlin@home device for monitoring implanted heart devices. They said the flaws potentially could enable hackers to easily take control of the devices and either speed them up or drain their power.

In its lawsuit, St. Jude said the accusations were defamatory and that its devices have numerous features that protect against cyberattacks. It accused the short-sellers of false advertising, conspiracy and manipulation of the stock market.

University of Michigan researchers last week said their own experiments had undermined allegations of security flaws in St. Jude’s implantable devices.

St. Jude agreed in April to sell itself to Abbott Laboratories for $25-billion.

MedSec did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

St. Jude’s shares rose 0.8 per cent in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

The stock has fallen about 4 per cent since Muddy Waters disclosed its position.

The case is St. Jude Medical vs. Muddy Waters, MedSec Holdings et al, in the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota, No. 16-cv-03002.

The opposite day I'm likely going to the peterson's automotive museum or the science center to see the space shuttle. (Wanted to go back to Vegas but last minute hotels for sat are nuts)

Told him I could not install the stove. He yelled at me for an hour threatened to cancel the entire order. Ect ect.

I've done NHRA weekends several times - if you love nitro and top fuel runs then Saturday - you'll see more runs down the track but they're not necessarily heads up race rounds like Sunday with points and cash on the line. Less busy on Saturday.

Get there early and head to the pits where they will be test firing up some of the cars before the rounds (and between). You'll see four TF rounds tomorrow in addition to everything else. You've seen this before so you know you'll need ear plugs and a cloth/handkerchief to cover your nose and mouth and wipe your eyes, and water to help the burning in your throat after - enjoy!

I used to only go on Sundays but then added qualifying also when I saw how many TF runs they get in before Sunday (a lot of cars get sent home).

Toronto police have arrested a driver on suspicion of impaired driving after he allegedly crash his car into the front of a triplex early Monday on the edge of North York.

Police said they received a call about the crash on Marlee Avenue, south of Lawrence Avenue West, at about 1:30 a.m.

They found that a Ford Mustang was travelling westbound on Wenderly Drive, which ended at Marlee Avenue where the driver left the roadway.

The car mounted a curb, struck a temporary waterline and came to rest on the front lawn.

Weather's been incredible, that said I'm tired... Been here two and a half weeks, total of 6.5 since June, I've been there and done that and found I was spending a lot more time in the hotel after work this time, different people in the course and haven't been hanging out like last time. (daylight savings times means it's dark at 5:30)
Had some fun though, Vegas the first weekend, peterson's and NHRA finals last weekend. I actually have the rest of the week of work and considered going back to Vegas but I'm shot. Maybe go back in December when I take a week off.

Shazam Keeps Ears Open When Microphone Is 'Off'

The music application Shazam has a nifty feature that identifies songs just by listening to a few seconds of it. The downside is that it's also always listening to you, according to new research.

To identify songs, Shazam turns on a Mac's microphone. But Patrick Wardle, director of research for the security company Synack, says that even when users toggle a selection to turn the microphone off, Shazam is still recording in the background.

It doesn't appears that Shazam actually processes the sounds it hears when the microphone is ostensibly turned off. But Wardle contends it would be trivial for someone to write malicious software to collect that sound.

"'OFF' should mean off, and due to their actions, we could get creative and easily design a piece of malware that steals this recoding without having to initiate a recording itself," Wardle writes.

Wardle notified Shazam before he went public. He writes that he is somewhat conflicted about whether the behavior is a big deal. But the finding illustrates that apps don't always do what they say they do, which can irk more technical users.

Close Oversight

Shazam's interaction with the microphone would have gone unnoticed if not for a tool that Wardle wrote. In his free time, Wardle writes macOS security tools that he makes available for free on his Objective-See website.

He recently released one called OverSight, which alerts users when a new process tries to access a Mac's webcam. It's evident when a webcam on a Mac is in use, as a green light comes on (see Defending Against Mac Webcam Hijacks).

But Wardle found there's no additional alert if some other application, such as malware, tries to access a webcam at the same time. That behavior helps attackers, as they would also only be recording what would likely be something of interest. OverSight shows an alert if that situation occurs, and users can either allow or block the access.

Since the tool's release, Wardle says it has been downloaded more than 50,000 times. One user discovered that when Shazam's microphone selection is toggled to off, it actually is still on as detected by OverSight.

On a long flight to Argentina, Wardle dug into Shazam's code and determined the finding was accurate, although the application does not appear to be exporting the audio.

"Again, though it appears that Shazam is always recording even when the user has toggled it 'OFF' I saw no indication that this recorded data is ever processed (nor saved, exfiltrated, etc)," Wardle writes. "However, I still don't like an app that appears to be constantly pulling audio off my computer's internal mic. As such, I'm uninstalling Shazam as quickly as possible!"

Shazam Responds

Wardle posted Shazam's low-key response to his notification, saying that it would "address this issue in a future update." It attributed the behavior to a shared software development kit it uses across macOS and iOS, Apple's mobile operating system.

"The iOS and Mac apps use a shared SDK, hence the continued recording you are seeing on Mac," Shazam writes. "We use this continued recording on iOS for performance, allowing us to deliver faster song matches to users."

Shazam couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

I did the same thing yesterday and with my luck had fuel pissing out of the carb bowl. For some reason the gasket wasn't sitting properly. Drained the gas and fixed the issue. All is good now!

A few years ago we upgraded our Queen to a King. Our old mattress was super comfortable, so we went into Sleepcountry just wanting to get the same mattress except in king size. The salesman told us that mattress had been discontinued, and went on to show us the newer/better mattress. It felt like we melted into it it was so comfortable. He then wanted to show us several other models but we said: "No! we are taking this one!". Didn't matter the cost. It is the best sleep ever. We look forward to coming home after vacation just for the bed.

1) sitting in my living room Thursday aft with CP24 on the tube.... and I hear a chopper in the air that seems like it's hovering right over my house.....while CP24 simultaneously goes to the chopper-in-the-air report of some dude who was raking his leaves and ended up neck-deep in a freakin sinkhole.....yup...that was about a 4 minute walk from my place

2) sitting in my living room yesterday aft with CP24 on the tube.....and they're reporting a strange incident where there was some sort of Counterfeit Goods Conference happening at the North York Novotel and one of the participants said "hey look" one of the stores right next door in the North York Centre was selling counterfeit hand-bags....so the cops raided the store and seized the goods......yup..that's at the end of my street...I've walked through the North York Centre past that store every weekday for the past 19 years

3) seems some neurosurgeon killed his wife who's also a doctor.....her walk-in clinic was down the street from their house across from Earl Bales Park in North York a few kms from my place....I've been to that clinic 2 or 3 times over the past 5ish years....and for all I can remember I mighta been looked after by the lady who just got killed

when the build next door is finished I'm gonna ask both the owner/developer as well as the current city-councillor-left-wing-wanker who I send my invoice too....cause I wanna get paid for all my time constantly sweeping up all their shit

I can attest to that. I was in this anti-inflammatory for my arthritis and it made be so dizzy that I couldn't stand up. Take the meds so I can work, but can't stand up to go to work...[emoji848].

Stuff I'm on now works great though, with minimal side effects. Has to be injected once a week which kinda bites.

service engine comes on my ford focus on my way home from work last night, figured it was just an o2 sensor and not wanting to try and change it on the coldest say of the year, took it to a local shop. I checked prices for sensor online before taking it in. Scan says front o2 sensor was bad and was given a quote of $303.50 for sensor and $60 for labor, my check online for same part was $93.25, needless to say but I am now going order the part to change it myself.

Dropped the Subie off to get the winters put on. Fueled up Helga. Went to Canadian tire for salt and washer fluid. Fortinos for some groceries, then Lococo's for more groceries, then Metro for more groceries, then the LCBO cause that's part of the trip, the the post office to pick up my parcel, now home and wait to go pick up the Subie..

Boy that was a good bit of travelling... But I enjoyed driving Helga today.. Too bad it got dirty :( lol She started out clean.. Might have to run it back through the wash again!!! :)
