WTF

and they plan on taking it without your consent

https://globalnews.ca/news/4599953/exclusive-stats-canada-requesting-banking-information-of-500000-canadians-without-their-knowledge/

this is so wrong on so many levels

contact your bank and your Federal MP and tell it to them straight

That is just wrong on all levels. My guess is that we have already consented to this in the T&C's of our banking agreements but the government should hear from us that obtaining PII financial data by a non-tax agency is wrong.

I'm so sick and tired of feeling like we are under attack from within.

Oh I'm outraged. But how many times can I say that we need to take this "government" the fuck down before it's too late.

Well said, I feel like we are being tracked at every turn now whether you know it or not. Always under the eye of someone, it’s really scary when you think of it.

we are being attacked from within. Trudeau is an open borders globalist, which means he's operating with global best intentions, not what benefits Canadians. Note; globalist best intentions as per his/Soros opinion.

He needs more money to give away, this rectal exam and the carbon tax are two of the more blatant examples of mining the taxpayers.

I think it's time for me to speak to an immigration lawyer about moving south.

Exactly, and if you're carrying a cell phone, you're already likely giving up a ton of information about yourself through many of the apps and location finding features. The technologies we've come to love and depend on come at a cost to our privacy.

Wow, talk about government over reach, scary what is written into a government departments mandate. They basically can grab data from any company etc. As it is in the legal fine print.

consider how Siri, Alexa, and the other similar devices/functions listen for "activation words". This means they are listening 100% of the time. So you've got it turned off, so what. Think of your wife/kids/dog simply ignoring you but they still hear you.

Now think about how sophisticated the voice to text software is.

Throw in keyword searching.

All the tech is in place, all that's missing is interest in doing it and processing power.

I can guarantee that in high security installations there are no smart phones permitted.

Some of them store the recordings as well.

Is it really that scary when we give it away freely even when they tell us in advance they will/are doing this? We're a bit slutty with our privacy/data when it comes to private companies.

It's worse there - Patriot Act is way more invasive.

Assuming that Trudeau gets voted out next year, and that either PC, or PPC come to power. How can they clean up the mess? Deport all illegals? That won’t play well come election campaign time.

At this point I don't see much difference between Trudeau and Scheer

To anyone wanting to leave this country to go to the US, please let me know if you need help packing.

I had a job years ago and worked with a fellow who came here when his was younger, with his parents from elselvador(sp?) everyday he would bitch about hating it here, hated Canada everything is garbage his country is better wants to go back

One day I got sick of it and offered to drive him to the airport and pay for his ticket home.
Within 20 min I was in the bosses office getting all kinds of holy hell for discriminating. Almost lost my job over it.

I also remember during Harpers time when were were transformed into the next 3rd Reich, and Obama turned America into a socialist utopia that there were plenty of people who lean left constantly complaining and talking about moving to the states.

The pendulum swings. Maybe if we are lucky someday we can limit that swing and stop the divisive politics.

You guys are nuts if you believe the US is a better country to live in over Canada.. if you named a country in Europe, hell yes. Way more relaxed lifestyle.

But the fuckin US? Have you ever driven through there? Think some of you guys really need to think twice about that.

I've travelled to many of the states and no way I would move to any of them. Driving in Houston or L.A. is a real test of your skills and patience...Arizona is really nice, but returning home always makes me feel glad I live here.

Ya. I'm trying to not go to an Islamic shit hole, so that only leaves Hungary and Poland. Great countries, but I'm afraid of flying.

Does it suck the government is doing this? YEP. Do I feel it's an invasion of my privacy? YUP. Am I going to lose sleep over it? NOPE.

Literally everyday someone making $15/hr has unbridled access to your financial information and if you don't think that a teller/rep or anyone else hasn't look at your financial records you done lost your mind. Also if you make a transaction that's deemed suspicious, FINTRAC is notified and can look in to your shit.

Privacy is an illusion for the most part, you can do as much as you want to protect your data but the end of the day if someone wants it there's means to obtain it. Sucks but it's the way it is.

^^^^

Fintrac comes into play with sketchy purchases etc

and nosey/bored bank tellers are not the Gov't

this requirement from Stats Canada is to access 500,000 bank accounts in year one

I'm in an industry where we rely on measurement/samples etc....so I asked this question to the guys this morning

what is a valid sample size for the entire country according to the industry - the answer is.....1000

one thousand

this Stats Can thing is no fucking sample at 500,000

anyway....Trudeau was questioned about this in the house yesterday and (shocker) he enthusiastically supports it

I've contacted both my bank and my MP

personally....I'd like to take the bastards responsible for this and drive their sorry asses out of the country

I believe the 500K repeats as well with "new" records added in the future so the number will snowball.

There is a lot more sharing between government departments now than the silos they had before and they have been pursuing big data strategies in recent years so expect this data to be shared with CRA (more than CRA has today which is account balance/interest income related versus transactional data. Will be interesting to see it it evolves into deeper dives into the cash businesses/trades/underground economy as they compare this banking data to tax return data (since the banks are not supposed to remove PII before sending to the agency).

Stats Can are emboldened since the Liberals came to power, as Harper gave them a haircut over just the Long form Census. Now that JT is in power they have bellied up to the bar for more.
Census I don't mind, as I was able to track alot of my family history through the early ones, but there is the slippery slope of the intrusiion into your life, almost how the Chinese government watches their citizens.

Trudeau is all for it, but the bankers are sounding the alarm. He did mention he was envious on how the Chinese government operated.
