Some harsh words were said regarding the 3rd gen Mustangs. I agree they aren't great cars, not much good came from the 80's except maybe the Grand National and few other exceptions. Foxes are cheap plastic lined tin cans with bad suspension, shit brakes, shit instrument panel, weak transmissions, 4 lug wheels and poorly designed unibody construction. BUT they were crucial in bringing performance back to cars.
Muscle cars died in the 70's... Ford helped to bring it back in 1982 with the new 5.0HO (Different from the 79 5.0 and 2.3T and obviously the 80-81 4.2L V8), I believe 82 was a very significant year in the Mustang history. Yes it could have been a K-car as Lou mentioned without the small block windsor but it's more than that. It was, after all, a; LIGHTWEIGHT, RWD, V8 POWERED pony car. Maybe if Dodge put RWD in their K-car and offered a 340 it would be regarded as something other than a simple cheap platform that helped save Dodge in the 80's (Don't say Dodge Mirada please)
Foxes are classics, I don't understand the refusal of the fact that these 5.0/T5 things (in decent shape) are actually RARE and especially in original paint, low mile form. You can in fact start seeing them as how we saw 60's Mustangs back in the 90's. I also believe they are the LAST true collector mas-produced cars we will ever see.
People who collected pre-WWI cars are all dead now, people who collected true muscle cars are in old folk homes with cataracts, now it's another generations turn to "collect" cars they once had or their dads had growing up... More demand than supply = jacked up prices. The 5.0 has a serious following, the foxbody has transcended it's own brand, no other Mustang has ever succeeded in that. No matter how slow they are today even compared to econoboxes, they will always be known as "the car to beat", it's now part of a car guy's DNA.
Why am I leaving the foxbody hobby then?
My father's death made some new neural pathways which changed my thinking about cars in general. I feel bad spending time alone in my garage wrenching on my old cars and even worse when my family doesn't really enjoy riding around in the old cars. Plus add to the fact that they are barely any safer than a motorcycle, I don't want to risk getting us all injured on a joyride where the chance of survival are much higher in newer vehicles.
Also, get this! Turns out, I can't stand stock foxes. I had a super clean notch which was 97% stock down to the springs... I hated the brakes, I hated the suspension, I just did not enjoy driving the thing, even the stupid cushy low back LX seats hurt my back. I've spent so much money and time taking the fox out of my notch with thousands and thousands of dollars for brakes, suspension, wheels, etc... and it's still behind the 2017 in terms of handling, comfort, amenities, braking, acceleration, etc... I just don't enjoy it. And of course I have the poor man's notch which came from factory without AC, no power anything and not even a stupid radio. Makes the experience lackluster to me now. <- still don't care about not having cup holders. I'm a 40+ year old who enjoys finer things in life and sitting in a shitty plastic chamber doesn't appeal to me anymore. The only old tech I really enjoy is my Marshall tube amp, it really is a different dynamic and to me music should be analog.
I'm slowly getting out of the car hobby which is why I was in the market for a 2018/19 Mustang (but ended up with a 17 for some reason lol). This is my last V8 car, my next one will be an electric (Probably a Tesla even if I'm not a big fan of Musk, no one else has a good performing electric yet). I figured I can't go cold turkey, I didn't even like the 10 speed auto everyone seems to jerk off to these days. It will take me time to get tired of banging gears and give up and go with the flow of progress. Once I start to feel that owning a gas guzzling manual V8 is just stupid, I'm jumping ship, getting a modern car that can actually drive me to work and just see a car as another place to enjoy creature comforts - not "feel the road, mechanical, raw, I'm gonna die here muscle car" [insert Tim Taylor (Tool Time) grunt arggh argghhh arrghhhh thing]
The funny part is, while I enjoy my 17 very much (did 2400km in a month). I'm starting to feel bad owning a V8 car in 2019 when the planet is about to kill us all with climate change and here I am, someone with at least average intelligence, not smart enough to make a change in my own life to at least not be part of the problem.* Although I get real good MPG on the highway which is 95% of my driving anyway, I get better MPG than all the mid-sized SUV's I see passing me as I mind my own business in the slow lane, going 100kmh in 6th gear lol...
So yeah, the fox is still an 80's tin can. It's a tin can a lot of people love for many reasons. They are important to Ford's history and probably is the reason for 99.99% of everyone on this board being into cars in general (even you S550 10-speed guys who shit on us manual transmission guys lol). I'm only done with them because they don't fit with my life. I've finally moved on after so many foxes and so many hours restoring and wrenching on them. also nothing personal towards foxbodies at all, the car guy in me is dying off making room for other lines of thought.
Thanks for hearing out my rant lol
*Side note: I made my house super efficient, my heating/cooling costs are pretty low. I cut back on cow meat, eat mostly chicken and throw in some vegetarian meals into the mix. I also try my best to telecommute as much as I can and I'm helping to push a company with over 250 office employees to embrace a telecommute policy, I could single handily take 250 cars off the road if they don't fire me in the process. lol So I don't feel "super bad" about my V8 car doing on average 9L/100km on the highway but holy hell does it like to drink if you start shifting past 3000rpm lol

lol - you sound like me in the 90's - didn't even own a car for six or seven years - commuted to work by either running, cycling, and on occasion cross country ski - still love the outdoors -stayed in shape and never took one step into the gym - but now I'm back shit happens - their are many reasons I'm back but I think the main reason is my children - I will make sure my kids stay off your lawn old man....lol

Nice rant Steve but imo the best Fox is a stock one with maybe some exhaust and rear gears because once you start modding that poor 80's motor the reliability goes away fast, also don't get me wrong I still love them Foxes but I do feel just like those classic muscle cars it's a car you should have if you already own another one cuz you never know when it's going to let you down.
The Fox is the reason why I got into the Mustangs and it took the new 5.0L to get me out of the Fox world.

Nice rant Steve! I think much like you. I don't know where the car hobby will be in 10 years or even 20 years, but I'd still like to find a early 80's Mustang to enjoy as a Sunday morning cruiser and throw in a cassette to remind me of the good old 80's! God only knows how much time is left...

I appreciate Fox bodies. I look at them every time I pass them.
But I don’t want to own one again. That’s just me tho.
As far as feeling bad about driving a V8... No. I don’t.

yeah I wouldn't cash in on internal combustion yet - I don't think electric will root too quickly you may see another type of fuel first...the very first internal combustion engine was hydrogen about 100years before the electric motor which coincidently was developed before the gas engine...interesting times.

I love my old v8 powered tin can.. but it’s paid for and dirt cheap on insurance.. can’t say the same for a new gt.
I got back into a fox earlier this year and have spent a good amount on suspension and brake upgrades, but still love the raw feel of the car. I have an AWD turbo Q50 for a daily driver, that’s not what I want out of my summer car. I have full respect and understanding of what the new generation cars can do, but it is just not what I am looking for
I had a total blast in my modded fox last week, zero chance it could have been anymore enjoyable with anything else. Drove it to the track, drove it hard, drove it home and took it up to blue mountain the day after. What more could I ask for
That being said, if it is not what you are looking for out of your vehicle, then you should find something you enjoy more

I don't see battery powered electrics coming to the fore either. Electricity is too expensive. If renewables like solar, wind, hydro provided the bulk of the base load I could see a maybe. Personally I think it will have to be a form of fuel cells with something like nuclear plants providing the base load and surplus power used to generate hydrogen. Then's there's a distribution system required.

yes Horse would be cool - the way technology is now I would say 50-60 percent of the people maybe more could work from home - tech like youtube is a great teaching platform that could also eliminate the need for a large chunk of the transportation and the need for buildings that only get about 6-8 hours of use for about 9 months of the year. Robotics posses a threat to many manufacturing and health care jobs which may open doors for more people to work from home - if business and governments really want to make a difference there are more affordable and maybe affective ways that would relieve a lot pf pressure on growing infrastructure and rapping and threatening the earth mining minerals, sand, gravel, and extracting oil and natural gas at such huge volumes. It seems simple but in my experience most people especially the Napolean types are bent oppression, doing things the hard expensive, and often wasteful way.

I’ve owned my 88GT for 27yrs and have made so many memories in it over the years.
I have customized it my way and still enjoy it for what it is every time I drive it.
It’s like the never ending project car and I’m still okay with that and if I wasn’t it would be gone.
The way I see it is drive what you can afford and what makes you happy.
I can also tell you that as many thumbs up or compliments I get in my Fox it’s no where close to the attention my dad gets in his 69 Roadrunner each time he drives it....but that’s not why he’s kept it since new all these years....he kept it to pass on to me to also enjoy. He’s been offered great money for his car but turned it down saying it’s not about the money. I guess we both have an attachment to cars and enjoy the thought of passing them down.
My son already feels the same way about the Cobra I purchased for him when he was born.

Nice - my new fox in 1990 was my first new car - I said for years I was going to keep it and pass it down. I later sold it and always regret that I did...

The resistance I get for a telecommute strategy is uncanny. If an employee is to slack off, they will slack at the office as well - I guarantee it. I say if you don't trust your staff to work - fire them... It's F-ing easy! Honestly, there are a lot of poor quality managers that feel they need to micro-manage. I trust my team to work, I can check their productivity with the burndown rate in my agile projects and commits to the codebase (on my phone via a tool called slack of all names which is integrated into the code repo) but I typically don't use those metrics for their productivity - I just make sure our sprints are going smoothly. I won't keep an employee for long if I don't trust them to work. I also don't believe in 9 to 5, I like the ROWE type environments as well but that's a little too forward thinking and risky (ROWE = Results Only Work Environment).
In a nutshell my remote work strategy is pretty simple and can be used even in teams that require a site-presence to work. In that case a schedule is required, using a rotation, to ensure there's always an attendance. My rule is there must be at least 1 in 3 butt in seat for teams with little to no interaction with the rest of the business and 2 in 3 butts in seats for higher interactions.
I think, overall, there needs to be a balance. I don't believe in 5-day-a-week telecommuting. My ultimate goal is 3 days a week telecommute but my roadmap starts with 1 or 2 days a week for telecommuting. Some roles require "bluesky" type meetings and you just can't do that with skype, it's not the same. My team has to be in the office together at least one day a week for such meetings. Our scrums are done via chat rooms and sometimes skype calls lol. Sadly in higher management positions such as myself, I can't telecommute too much. I reserved a day a week to work from home (except now since I don't have an office with all the renos going on at work). My secretary booked a "meeting" day for me so I can just not be bothered and focus on strategies - making business plans and business cases requires me to lock up in a room, lots of blow, hookers and coffee and just work 20+ hours straight lol <- joke, I don't drink coffee past 2pm.
Creating a modern work environment is stupid hard these days. Lots of managers are stuck in the past or just bad managers who do not know how to manage people or processes. It's all moot anyway, in 10 years or so (maybe less) AI will replace a lot of jobs in offices. I bet you I could reduce staff significantly even with today's AI at work. I started to hint around that, let me higher a few more devs and architects and I can reduce staff in my department by half and have better tools for better BI and whatnot...

This! Drive what makes you happy is key. I hated my 2011 5.0 (auto), just did not enjoy the car. I remember saying it felt too much like a daily driver or something. I replaced it with my notch project. Today I want a daily driver Mustang... my life changed.
But I have to say, my 2017 gets far more attention (much to my chagrin) than my notch ever does. Teens to older ladies give it the thumbs up. I'm pretty confident I can pick up ladies in this car much more than any foxbody ever could lol... Not that I would but this stupid car gets much more attention than I'd like to be honest.

If it wasn’t for the Mustang specifically the foxbody Mustangs, I wouldn’t have been on these forum sites. I agree that there was a time when the fox was the shit and if you had one stock you were the odd man out. Would I buy one today? Maybe. Would I buy a new S550? Maybe. I do have an appreciation for the new S550’s for what it is but I have admit that I do like my luxury and performance. Let’s see what Ford has to offer for the next gen Mustang.

I don't think foxes are ugly, I think from an 80's perspective they look great. And it's hard to stray from the fact that they're econoboxes with RWD and V8's... Lots of cool factor. Best looking fox of all (to me) is the 82GT.

This is sorta what happens with my car.....I get thumbs up, people coming over to me all the time. Put my car in a group of 05+ stangs and mine is the one people look at. Not gonna lie, I like it, partially because its almost a bit of recognition of the hard work, time and money I have put into it over the years.
With my toy, I do not want it feeling like a daily, cause it isn't, I want it to be a bit of a rough ride, loud and stand out in a crowd.

My wife doesn't like my coupe, my dad said "why did you buy that POS". One of my co-workers in his 60's told me, "that's not a real Mustang". These foxes are really only appealing to those who grew up around these iconic cars in their high school years. I made a promise to myself, one day I'll buy my high school dream car and thankfully I was able to fulfill that promise.
Sure it's raw, it rides and handles like shit. But that classic sound of a 5.0 piped through a flowmaster system, it's chiseled into our brains. These cars bring back so many great memories, it puts a big smile on my face every time I go for a cruise.

Now every time I take out my s197 beast with all the comforts and power to me it still feels like a muscle car and it sounds like one too and I get more likes with this car than I ever did with my Fox because like mentioned they don't look like boxes from Russia and the s197 especially are a throw back to the 67 Mustang which more people recognize.

Maybe you’re right but who knows we may or may not be around . Lots of factors involved ie fuel, legislation, parts , the lists go on .
However I think someway it may continue, evolve?( maybe) in ways we might not have thought or imagined. I only think this way because I see it around with some young gens. My son is 14 ( 30 yrs) will put him at 44- he is a strong opponent lol on not trading for the s550, he prefers older lol.
He prefers older body style gens mustang except mustang 2 lol
His dream car would be a charger from the 60 or 70’s ( boo)
This is just one kid, but what about world wide.? I think as enthusiasts we just continue what we do and hopefully some of that trickles down to the new gens. Ahh maybe part of me still lives in Disney land lol

LOL, the only reason I mentioned Russian car is somebody else said it.
I really hope that some of the Fox guys in here can see the :sarcasm: in my posts and if not well too bad and get over it already.
Although maybe this is what Lou meant when he said Russian car

Joe,
Don't listen to me and go buy yourself a mint early 80's Fox that will cost you a pretty penny cuz at least when you get bored of it you'll have a car that can fetch you some decent coin. Start looking State side you should find something nice and then you can fly down and pick it up yourself.
Good luck Joe, you have all winter.

See you at the next track event and hope I don't have to tow your Fox home with my generic Mustang.
Lou I’ve been driving a coyote longer then you have and it’s just in my truck where that motor belongs.
Real motors have pushrods! If you don’t believe me skip a rental day and check out OSCA or Street Outlaws lol.
Regarding towing at least I use a Ford for that and for my daily....you drive a Toyota which reminds me of a popular saying “If it’s Jap it’s crap” :ford:

... the copycat 5.0 badge that was made famous by the immortal Fox Body.
ironic that the 2018 coyote is now finally, actually 5.0L.
