That trend is consistent with each new model.

Graph is a bit bumpy, but definite downward trend since the inception of the Mustang.

Is margin improving on the lower production numbers?

I also believe price plays into this equation.
A fully loaded GT Vert is nearing $63,000 (retail) before tax.

The prices of cars have been creeping up to the point where they are not affordable to many people. Scary how a Mustang GT costs $63,000 though. I still remember paying $14,000 for my LX 5 Litre hatch.

You can get a Mustang GT for 37K and change, with rebates and before negotiation (plus tax tho).

And aren’t stick cars like just 3% of all sales? Looks like no one wants a performance car that needs a little bit of manliness to drive too. Put it in D with your pinky finger and press the gas. Probably has special seats so your skirt doesn’t get caught in the car too lol (being funnah)

yep - paid 13,500 for my '90 5.0 in 1990 - was making 21.00/hr driving a fork lift - not sure people driving forklifts still make that kind of money? would love to have a new Mustang but at my age don't want to finance - young people today just don't make that kind of money. especially out of school. I went to college in the 80's tuition less than a $1000 - my son just enrolled to Conastoga $5000.00 1 year, for what welding which he is already a dam good welder. The think tanks in the industries (cars/bikes) cant figure out why millennials don't buy shit dah!!! or just don't want to admit the real reason, and us old cogs don't want to go into 9yrs of debt while closing in on retirement. In my mind to pay 50-100,000$ for an investment with no return, that may not last much longer then 10yrs if driven daily, and with the gout threats of not being able to buy gas in the near future, it's a no briner I don't even give a new performance car much thought.

just for comparison: accounting for inflation, that $14k back in 1990 would be equivalent to $24k today. So yeah, a $37k Mustang is pretty expensive! Like 50% more.

A car is not an "investment" unless you wrap it in plastic with 0 miles for a few decades (assuming it is a collectible type car/model). Otherwise you won't see any capital gains or dividends that would constitute a financial ROI.

For comparison my first new car was a 1975 Camaro 350 4 barrel 4 speed for $5,250......I only made $100 per week at that time!

And a new 75 Corvette could be had for around $7,500!

according to info online my Pace Car was around $10,000 new (may have been higher than average at that time cause it's a limited supply) - in 1990 I bought 5.0 notch for $13,500 not much increase from 1979 - I do remember the late 80's Cobra's and vert starting I think around $17,000 - sometime in the 90's car prices began to spiral upwards out of control (imo) - I do remember in the late 80's Ford putting together to 5.0 notch package to try a sell cars. My wife's 2015 Caravan (and we've owned many) was 26,000 cash which really has not changed too much I believe over the last twenty years. I can justify the cost if it last 10 years 2600/year ownership - with any luck Ford will have a big sale next year....lol then maybe just maybe....

But it’s priced competitively and it’s way more car.

I’m not denying it’s a great car and great value, but you made it sound like it was inexpensive. It’s still a fun car, but it’s no longer a cheap car. The premise of this thread was the declining sales numbers. The hypothesis is that it is directly proportional to the increased cost.

yes they are competitively priced but way out of my budget - if you look the graph there's a big drop off starting in 2008 to present. it may be safe to say that's due to pricing not flooded market - that's ten years of lost sales - it would be interesting to see what other brands are doing - I know comparing my minivan to a mustang is like apples and oranges but the 2015 caravan is ten time's the 2003 caravan was with very little price increase. That being said maybe after ten years of losing sales there may be a buying increase....

2018 was an extremely short model year. They closed the order book on Mar 6, 2018.Normally you can order new cars into April at least or May. The 2019 order book opened about 2 weeks later. I’m sure the shortened availability plays a factor in less sales for 2018.

What are truck sales like because those are over inflated in price imo.

Mustang is no longer a sporty car for the average joe.

Disagree, pull back the option list and the car is well within reality.

one other factor could be the sharp downturn in the economy that began in 2008 - the lack of sales may be an indicator the economy is not recovering as well a the experts may want us to believe...

5.0 is like 37k plus taxes at the baseline with manual. Ecoboost is just under 30k.

It's true though the Kia Stinger is 47k with the good engine and similar acceleration performance as the 5.0 Mustang. I guess everything is stupid expensive these days, not just the Mustang. Actually the more I research, the more value the S550 presents.

Whether it’s inexpensive or not is personal opinion. It’s priced competitively in the segment. A 1992 Toyota Camry started at $14,368 US. For 2019 it starts at $23,645 US. That’s about a 65% increase, but about on par with inflation.

In 1987, a Mustang GT was about $20,000 CAN. Using inflation, that would be about $44,000 today. Pretty dead, on I’d say.

That's kinda my point: they don't have an inexpensive "LX" version anymore.
Been saying for years would love it if Ford would offer a no-options Mustang. Would also make for a much lighter Mustang.

But there wasn't a track pack option, brembo option or navi option in the Fox days. If your going add these options yourself eventually, why not get them factory installed? This coming from a LX Fox guy who would kill for new GT350

Ok, Ok, new Mustangs are NOT more expensive than in the olden' days. "Expensive" is just an opinion.

It's not that expensive for what you get.

I couldn’t afford one now at these prices so in hindsight I’m glad I bought when I did, even though I still debate trading for a new one.

The new LX would be the base Ecoboost. Blasphemy? Maybe but it makes over 300hp and weighs 3542lbs.

Sticker on my 14 Premium Track Pack GT was $45,000. Same equipped car is like $58,000 one year later. Is there a little more to the 550? Sure, but not that much more. Pricing is out to lunch on ALL cars these days. I wouldn’t have even paid $45k for my car. Got it for just under $36k.

Look at the price for an 04 Focus and an 04 Cobra. Then look at today’s Focus and GT350. Focus has barely gone up yet the “Cobra” is like $30k over inflated.

50+ yrs. in production is pretty enviable/impressive, and one of the only cars Ford says they'll continue to build. We'll see what the next gen platform brings....and who it targets.

As for buying a newer Mustang, if it's something you like, and it's not going to tie a rope around your neck financially, why wouldn't you go get one? Life is far to short not to enjoy some fruits of your labour.....IMO.
