View Full Version : FALL TRACK DAY.
SEPT 13
TMP MOTORSPORTS PARK
Call DaSilva Racing to pre register.
If you've never been, great place to start your on track / lapping day experience.
Yes your bone stock (but in good mechanical condition) ride is more than up to the task.
Yes we have a separate rookie group. No pressure to go an ounce faster vs what your comfortable with.
Yes once you get more experience, no problem moving up to the intermediate group.
Several experienced guys in attendance who would be more than happy to ride along and give you some tips.
Yes non Fords are 100% welcome.
Any questions or concerns, fire away in here.

What ZR said. If you don't want to post it publicly, send us a PM and we will try and answer it. Then we will post it anonymously so others can learn from it. What's that old saying, "the only dumb question is the one not asked".

I’m planning on attending, but will not have project RedSN with me. I will be bringing my helmet. More than happy to ride shotgun with any rookies that want some tips. Might not be Ed or Brad caliber instruction, but hopefully can provide some help. If you’ve never taken your Mustang to the track ....trust me, it’s heroin level addictive.

I really wanted to go to this, but it's impossible to get a day off work right now. So I have a question. Would anyone suggest booking an open car lapping event on the weekend? I would be going in completely blind, I wouldn't know anyone, is it a good idea?

What is the cost? I really want to give this a try...
I'll firm up with Joe today but typically $120/130 on pre registration and $150 or 60 at the gate.

Car in good mechanical condition.
Helmet, Road Race spec is suggested.
Several here are using HJC road race or CL17 helmets (Royal Distributing for CL17).

Don't know you but if you are willing to ride with a 67 year old who drives like he's 17, you're welcome in my car for a lap or two. Frankly, in the past 25 years I have only done two or 3 autocross/track events. Prior to that I did several every summer and in my youth I actually taught skid control.

Problem is...it's not enough of an incentive for people to pre-register, people are willing to see how the weather plays out first before deciding on the day if they are going to go or not...if the weather turns out to their liking...they are only out $14 which is peanuts to most...

Track day guidelines
The first and most important rule for the lapping sessions is to remember these are driving sessions - not a race! There are no positions and no prize money or trophies. If you are driving erratic, competitively, or in violation of the rules and procedures, you will be ejected from the track and facility with no refund.
Track will not provide any official lap times during lapping sessions.
There shall be no contact between cars at any time.
Do not stop unless disabled on track.
Do not tailgate another car.
Do not group together on the track.
Do not block faster cars that are closing on you.
Watch your mirrors, as you must signal faster cars by you.
If you suspect serious mechanical problems while on the track, pull off the track slowly and await assistance. If you can continue, do so slowly and return to the pit area. Get off line and use hand signals and flashers to indicate that you have a problem while returning to the pits.
If it starts to rain, slow down to a speed below that at which you know you can drive safely in the wet. The sessions will continue in the rain unless the track becomes unsafe to do so.
If you spin, run off track, or make contact with another car, you must report to the pits prior to continuing the session.
Windows all up or down. Verts (cage or not) must run with top up and properly secured.
Helmets optional for hard-top vehicles, mandatory for soft-tops (driver and passenger). Strongly suggested for all vehicles.
Passing zones, NO PASSING IN ROOKIE GROUP. Advance / Intermediate, front and back straights and only after being clearly signaled by the vehicle in front.
No signal = no pass...........no exceptions. No passing anywhere else regardless if the vehicle in front signals you to do so.15. When being passed, lift off the throttle, do not turn it into a drag race to the corner
Flagman controls all actions on the track via flags. As your coming into the last corner, give a quick glance his way.
When coming off the track with hot brakes, do not use your parking brake, leave vehicle in gear. Hot pads can and will stick to your rotors
Should you be black flagged, don't panic. Come in and see the flagman for further instructions.
Should a vehicle crash or otherwise become disabled, do not run onto the track under any circumstances. If your on the track, look to the flagman for directions
If your brake pedal is getting soft, safely come off the track and allow them to cool. Only go back on when / if your brakes feel and work as they should.
If you have, bring a torque wrench to check wheel nuts.
When exiting the track, signal your intentions either with a hand signal or signal light on your vehicle
Do not enter the track unless directed to do so via the flagman
Cars will be divided into three groups, ROOKIE / INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED. Flagman will display a flag to indicate which group is out.
After each session, good idea to take a look under the hood / under your vehicle for any fluid leaks
If your in among a group that is clearly faster than you and it's making you uncomfortable, cycle off the track and head over to the flag man, return to the track once the groups passed OR move down to a slower group.
While at least some rookies will be tempted to move up to the faster group, first time out should be about hitting your marks, logging laps and getting experience. Give it at least the morning to get acquainted with the track.
Remove all loose items from your vehicle including from console, glove box, floor, above your visor (remote door openers or similar). Same for inside the trunk, don't want any 1/4 panel dents from the inside. Remove or fully secure spare tire and jacking equipment.
No cameras outside your vehicle unless secured to a permanent mount. Inside vehicle must also be either mounted (suction cup or similar) or secured to passengers hand via wrist strap or similar.
At no time should yours or your passengers hands or arms be out the window.
No drones permitted, pitts or race track
Helmets must be worn properly and secured via mfg's strap.
Have a question, lots of experienced peeps there. Don't be shy about walking up and asking someone. Only stupid question is the one you don't ask.
Yes we will be doing a parade lap or two for the rookie class. Track looks totally different from the drivers seat, will help you get your bearings.
Let's all be safe and have fun.
Many thanks to Joe and everyone at DaSilva Racing for organizing this event.............as per the norm, you guys rock!!

sunblock
water
rag/cloth (to clean numbers off window at end of day)
Aspirin/Advil/Robax
kleenex
bandaids

tell the truth: did you do more laps in the car? or on the bike?
On the bike of course! But what a blast I had in the car, both my own and in Rick's and Craig's deadly civic. Those guys can really drive, but in completely different ways (big hp in Ricks to low hp and crazy handling in the civic)
After me correcting myself that I was only going to ride 60k after the lapping day instead of the typical Thursday 70 with the days getting shorter, we were only able to get 50k in because of a mechanical problem with a friends bike. We did average 36.5km/hr though!
Couple of beers on the patio to top the day off, what a great day! Slept well last night

Thanks to all: Rick(ZR), Joe, and the other volunteers. Terrific day, well organized.
On the way out I got caught in traffic on the 403 so we didn't arrive till 9:40. I was concerned that I might have missed the drivers meeting, but it didn't get started till after 10.
This is not my first rodeo, but I was very dissapointed in my performance. I thought I'd start in the Intermediate class and move up to advance, but after 2 spinouts ZR thought I should stay with the rookies!. I was very humbled.
I'm 68 years old, and the first autocross/racing I did was when I was 20. I guess age does take a toll after all. This must be why there aren't may seniors in racing.
Later I went back out with the intermediates and finally put 3 very satisfying laps together.
My son Noah came out with me, and this was his first ever event. He stayed out for the entire first and second rookie sessions and had a blast. He now has an incentive to pull his 89 Fox(all done up by ZR) out of the barn after 6 years of sitting there, and get it ready for next season.
