Woke up this morning to find an attempted theft of my 2001 Dodge Ram. Unsuccessful mind you. But when I attempted to start it due to the ignition being intact the column started smoking.
Had to scramble and disconnect the battery while she smoldered. Wife called 911. Got it out. Wiring burnt in the column. Truck needs to go in for repair.
Thankfully I left full coverage on it. Kids are freaking out because we are leaving next Thursday for holidays and we pull the trailer with it. FML.

The old world would have their hands cuts off. Might be worth bringing that back.

Way back in 1982, I had a 4x4 Jimmy (full size) that we used for plowing. One night, around 3 AM, my wife was nursing our son
Daniel in the living room, and she heard the truck start up. She thought nothing of it, as it had snowed the day before and she thought that perhaps my guys were coming to get it to do some plowing.
Anyway, next morning I went out at 7 am, and guess what? No truck. The police came, did their thing, and said they'd find it.
About 10 days later, The investigating officer called me and asked if I'd found the truck yet. I asked him back: isn't that sort of your job?
Never did find that truck.
20 years later, my borther's Corvette was stolen right out of his garage. After 30 days the insurance company settled. One day after getting the cheque, the Montreal police called. They found the car sitting in a parking lot in Montreal, complete with all his construction plans and paperwork (he's a builder). The insurance company wouldn't give him back the car, insisting they had settled, so he bought another corvette!

Initial call with insurance adjuster this morning. Without even looking at the truck they are leaning toward total loss. Fuck sakes. Even though it is old I can't replace it for what they are going to lowball me with.
How bad could it be for them to slam a used column in there so you can get on with your life.
Not right.

Can you call the insurance company back and say "just kidding"?
....and put a new column and wiring harness in yourself?

Isn't there a place out Cambridge way that wrecks a bunch of Ram trucks?

I will be fighting them on this and buying it back if they want to total loss it. New steering column is all it needs in my opinion.
Seems ridiculous write off is even on the table.

The only reason I got the insurance involved is because I am going away on holidays with the travel trailer as of this Thursday. Loss of use gets me a rental with towing capability.

Update:
Appraiser looked at the truck on the 14th. Finally got a decision yesterday. Fixing the truck. My mechanic has ordered the parts.

A week of unnecessary stress and hassle only to agree to fix the damn truck in the end. That's BS.
Glad they are fixing it.

What happened to the good old days where these assholes would just burn the ride after their joyride? Or was this a quebec thing? If a car got stolen in my home town, you never see it again...

The thieves have realized that the cops don’t really care. And the attempts to find the stolen vehicles are non existent. So that when they do get them they can easily get a week or two of use out of them and then just ditch them there will be no follow up once the vehicle is found. So they just keep doing it with no fall out of back lash.
