truck racks, what are you using, pros and cons.

looking for a rack for the truck (2018 f150, screw)

we did have the ford tri folding hard tonneau cover, i liked the security of it but my wife found it heavy. it was damaged by the theives. so isurance is replacing it and gave me the go ahead to go to something different as long as i pay the diference.

was thinking of going to fords aluminum rolling cover, sister in law has it and likes it, get the security and lighter to deal with.

any way we need a rack as well to make it easier to carry the canoes when camping. just looking for opinions on what guys have used, defiantly need one that can be used with a tonneau either the ford one we are looking at or something similar, would like something that looks decent (not like a work truck) or is easily removable.

We run a mix of TrailFX contractor racks and custom built (by a local weld shop) racks on our fleet. TrailFX makes a nice product, be sure to use locktite on your bolts or it will rattle loose every 10k kms or so. This is the TrailFX

It's beefy as heck, but I personally think they look great. You'd need a between the rails tonneau for it to work, these use the stake pockets in the top rails.

It also goes in the stake pockets but comes out easy so you can roll the tonneau on and off.

I personally just run a bed extender but to run it while towing you'd have to stand it straight up and then you need a back rack or roof rack to support at the cab.

I run the Yakima rails on my truck mounted on an ARE cab level cap.
It’s my 3rd truck with identical set up. 98 Tacoma, 13 GMC Sierra and now 16 GMC Sierra
Lots of lockable storage space. Great for work and play. The rails are easily removable and lockable.
I’ve had everything from canoe, kayak, drywall, lumber, trim, table saw, wheel barrel, even prefabricated subfloor for a shed.14627146271462814629

seems to be a problem cant go with a cap as sometimes big stuff needs to go in the truck and all the racks show are not compatible with a cover, seems silly to me. that the only options are a solid one piece tonneau with a rack on top (limits space) or a rack with a soft tonnoeau (limits security)

been scouring the internet for days now and seems to be no perfect solution,


might have to just make something but aint nobody got time for that

Not sure how often you have large stuff but I can have the cap off with 2 guys in about 2 min.
It’s 4 bolts and a quick connection for power and lift off.
At one point I had a 4 hook winch that I made in my garage. I used to back the truck in and lower the 4 hooks down. Hook on to the roof rack and winch up to the garage ceiling. I could have it off in 3 min by myself.
Now I never remove it I just use a trailer for items that don’t fit.

There is, he just seems to be dead set on a specific tonneau cover.

Only options I have found are you n a solid one piece tonnou (which isn’t an option because if I’m not around and my wife needs to move something for work. She can’t lift off herself.)

Or soft rolling tonnou. Which isn’t an option due to in my area they just cut the cover and steal your crap.

I’ll look into the tack rack by my canoe is 17 ft long so may not work. Same reason I’m hesitant about a rack on the roof off the truck. Makes for a lot of overhang.

Seen that one. Still trying to find a local dealer. And the sites that have it only have it listed up to 2015 for the f150.
Not sure what is different that it wouldn’t list up to 2018

Lomax is pretty niche, couldn't find any dealers here. Was going to spec it for my brothers new truck, ended up getting gouged and going tonneaupro.

Made some calls and found a dealer for the Adarac. 675 for the pro.
They confirmed it’s a stake pocket mount and should work with the ford rolling aluminum cover
