Machining a new flywheel???

So on the surface, topic / practice may seem nutz but since starting the practice we've yet to get one back that was "close enough". From OEM Ford or GM to aftermarket, all have been flawed. Typical problem, taper towards inside of the flywheel with a wave running lengthwise along the outter approx third of the friction surface. If you want your new clutch and flywheel combo to feel perfect from mile one, money well spent. Had the new OEM Ford alum version for my own car done yesterday, was one of the worst to date.

That really sucks. Best to always get the surface cut to be safe. I remember you telling me some horror stories about shit flywheel finishes.

How much more is throwing the flywheel on the lathe first?

Needs to be done on a flywheel grinder vs lathe (although some still do em on a lathe with less than stellar results), about $80.

Had a brand new Ford Racing flywheel installed in the Cobra a few years back and couldn't figure out why it was chattering sooooo bad turned out the flywheel was way off and had to get it machined.

Wasted a good chunk of change redoing the job not to mention the time wasted....but lesson learned!

This is the clutch I’m thinking about getting for my gt500. Do they have issues with the supplied flywheels as well? I have cut tons of flywheels with a flywheel grinder but all for trucks. You should she how bad some of them are after being used. Proper technique is to check the flywheel install with a dial indicator. Most people skip that step and just bolt it up but it only take another 5min to do it right and check

Just cut the original, no need for a new one.

Good thread though, I’ve seen it even on new cars (Jeeps) sadly.
