What are you guys using for home security cameras? Wishing I had already had something up to catch the low life scumbags.

Not sure I want to get into security systems and alarms and stuff. Dog in the house should help with that. Though apparently he didn’t feel the need to bark when somone was stealing the truck

I’m using a mix of nest and some amazon stuff... getting an industrial quality system as I’m part of a smart home project at work tho lol but the Amazon system works good I think it was 130 for 4 cameras. Not 1080p but pretty good night vision

looking at the defender and the swann from best buy, not as cheap on line but available today, since they have all our keys and made a point of chucking my wifes purse out the window but keeping her wallet and keys, I wasn't something set up to catch the bastards if they come back in the near future

Had a Defender system many years ago, they're junk. Swann is good, it's rebranded Hikivision, Lorex is consumer line of Flir which is not bad, but their customer service is horrible.

For about 3 years now I've been running a Q-see (rebranded Dahua) 8 channel 1080P system, with a 2TB hard drive. I have no complaints with the system.

Look at Costco's website, they usually have some half decent systems on sale.

Just got rogers home monitor installed. 3 cams. Loving it. I too have dogs but I wanted a smoke/carbon monoxide alarm that alerts before it's too late if we're at work or something.
The cams were just a bonus and the night view seems great.

did some shopping, and wasn't able to find anything that I could have a couple cameras at work and a couple at home that were linked up to the same system. so went with a pair of Ring Spot light Cameras, cheaper than the multi channal ones and lets me put eh cameras any where i want. wire less and battery operated vids are saved on a cloud and accessable anywhere. had a customer raving about his new home and all teh Ring stuff so figured id give it a shot, and means i can move the cameras around and put them pretty much anywhere

yep, my uncle is a lock smith so he came over this am and re keyed stuff for us, other than the camp trailer, need to order new handles for it

one of my new cameras will be pointed directly at it for the time being

I have the ring doorbell/camera too. Works good but you need to pay a monthly fee for hosting to record any data otherwise it’s just live stream only

Security is one concern, signal reliability over wifi is a hit and miss.

I use a HikVision PVR https://us.hikvision.com/en and a bunch of high-end Raptor cameras. Everything is hard wired but viewable through the Hik Conect App. If you want junk buy a kit from Costco. You will return it after a year or less for many reasons. Wireless set ups are poor, laggy and tax your wifi system in your home if you run more than 1 camera.

Don't those listed use the router password to access the home network? I don't have experience with these other IoT devices so I'm not sure how you sign them in to the secured network.

Assign a 192.168.x.x i.p with WPA2 encryption, ensure firmware is current, best you can hope for with consumer grade electronics...

had to use the phone to access the ring cam then input password for the router like I would for any other device

I just strated to use a Luxul XWR3150 and Luxul AP both are ccommercial grade. Speeds, power and security you can't find combined in a consumer grade product off the Bestbuy shelf. I have now balanced the family and all their devices. Everyone has their own SSID in this house.

Most consumer grade products dont come secured, they come plug and play, easy to set up. People want to come home plug it in and it works. However, yo leave yourself open to security issues if you don't know what to look for.

Its not really security cam related, but another good security tip and way to monitor your network. Make your router run through Open DNS https://www.opendns.com you can monitor who and what users are doing on your network. Also filter your kids devices so they can't access things like porn or drug use, suicide etc. Hell you can even limit the amount time they use the internet.
