View Full Version : Surging Rough Idle No Throttle Response

Hi guys, new here, first post and it might be a long one.
TL;DR I need a good mechanic around the Barrie area who knows what they're doing.

So I have a 2006 V6...GT? I never know what to call it lol. The car started off as a 2006 4L V6 but after about 64K I was eager to get some mods done. I was very new to the whole car scene (even more so, the car modifying scene) so after some quick research online I found that getting a supercharger would the V6 would mean topping out at 350ish hp. For the same kind of money I could swap out the motor from a GT which already sits at 300 and work my way from there. For the long term goal of going somewhere near 500/550 whp this obviously seemed like a better solution. Anyway, I got a motor/tranny/rear end from two different 07 and 08 GTs, and went to work. I had a shop in Brampton (where I lived way back when I got this done) and the job was done well. The car drove perfectly and between 2008 and last year the only problems that came across was a blown AC compressor and a broken alternator wire. Now the car is sitting at 142K and one very annoying issue has come up. In stop and go traffic (almost always on hot days) the car starts to surge abruptly before idling rough. The codes that pop up are always pointing to the throttle actuator control (stuck) or throttle sensor/position switch circuit voltage issue. I bought a new TPS and replaced it. Car was fine for a little but the problem came back. This time I took it to Ford in Barrie and they ran a diagnostic...nothing, had the car for a week, drove it to empty tank and nothing. I parked the car away after cause it was close to snow season now. This year I took the car back out in late February early March and the car was perfectly fine until yesterday...same thing. Was driving along Highway 27 and the car forced idle. No response from the throttle pedal, nothing. So I'm kind of stuck...its the exact same symptoms every time so...yeah...
Edit: After the engine swap I stopped modding all together...could only afford school or car mods so school took precedent but I'm done now and would like to finally finish what I started all those years ago...

Are there any non stock parts or tune on it?
Have you removed and properly cleaned the throttle body?
Have you cleaned all grounds including the numerous body grounds?
Assuming MAF has been properly cleaned as well?

Assuming MAF has been properly cleaned as well? There are no non-stock parts or tune. Its basically a 2007 GT. I did clean the throttle body thoroughly and that didn't change much. If it did I couldn't tell. I did not clean or check the grounds...didn't know about it so I'll look into that. As for the MAF, I'm going to clean it tonight so we'll see.

Cleaned the MAF and Throttle Body...still the same. The car idled fine on the driveway, let it sit there for like 10 minutes no problem...even revved it a few times, no issues. Took the car out, 1st gear no problem, 2nd gear no problem, as soon as I got on the gas in third gear it defaulted to limp mode...no response from the gas pedal. Although the idle here was smooth. In the past whenever it would limp, the idle was very rough.

Edit: there is response from the throttle. I put my foot down to the floor and the car revs and holds another 200ish rpm. It idles at 750 and goes to 850/900. Also I said earlier that the car was entirely stock, but this is not true as I do have a h-pipe (not offroad) cat-back magnaflow exhaust.

I'd see if you can borrow a throttle body to try on it.
Odd that the new TPS improved it for a short while but problem returned. Did you go with an OEM Ford or aftermarket?

Update: So I took the car into Steeda...I thought they were like Mustang specialists but they don't do electrical or repair jobs in general but we do know that the intake manifold is cracked. They did a spray test and the car was very noticeably bogging. That being said now I'm going to start buying parts for a complete overhaul to get the car not only into road ready condition but boost ready condition. The hard part at this time is to find a shop that would cater to my needs...

Yet to see one cracked, not that it's not possible but we have seen several with either a failed intake gasket and or leaking due to corrosion on the head pushing / lifting the intake and gasket out of place. In each instance, poor running conditions came and went.

Could you recommend a shop? Honestly even if it's the GTA I don't mind the travel...

Has it been winter driven?
Do / have you washed the engine? If so, we've also seen some degreasers damage intake gaskets.
Oddest part about modern intake gaskets, not at all uncommon to cause an intermittent issue.
Need help with it, shoot me a pm.

Need help with it, shoot me a pm.I've never washed the engine. I've wiped it down a few times with damp towels but nothing serious. As for winter driven, I've got about 1 months worth of winter driving in total.

What are the actual codes that come up?
Seems to me, if you know the intake has a problem, fix what you know is broken and see if it solves that plus current issue.
