Colleague here at work lost a bunch of shingles on his home in Whitby. He found one in the front yard and it only had one ripped hole in it. It appears the roofers didn't nail the shingles down properly.

If it was a single shingle then it would likely only have 1 nail. Shingles are generally 3 shingles in one sheet. 3 nail holes, 3 shingles.

It was the whole sheet with only one nail hole.
