View Full Version : School me on supercharging my 5.0

I picked up a extremely low mileage flowzilla with the blowzilla inlet and gt40 intake setup. The plan is to do a cam and head swap, new water pump and aluminum rad while installing the supercharger. Now I am trying to figure out what injectors and MAF I will need as well as other miscellaneous things that I may overlooking.
Please, any and all advise is welcome.

Nice, I picked up a blowzilla with air to air conversion that will hopefully get assembled this year on my 93
Have any pics of the air to air inter cooler setup? I am hoping to make my own

95 will have hyper pistons, so stay under 8psi and a good tune is key.

Very good information. Keep it coming [emoji4] I may do a full rebuild while the engine is out. Should I go with forged pistons? If so did any 5.0 come stock with forged pistons?

85-92 have forged pistons , forged are better but a lot of people have made good power with stock hyper pistons , like said above tune is key

I believe the 1987 to 1992 mustang 5.0 engines had forged pistons.

Yes older engines use forged pistons, but if it was me I’d go 10 psi max even with those. As far as injectors you’d need to know what psi you’ll be running and what power level you’re expecting to be at, 36-42 lb/hr is probably what you’ll end up with, and you’ll also need to upgrade your fuel pump.
Stock 302s with forged pistons can be had cheap ($200?) may be best off to buy a used engine and build it on a stand then swap it in.

Conservative boost + safe tune play well with hyper pistons.

That car is all kinds of sexy. How did it run with the 19lb injectors? The guy I bought the blower from has 24lb injectors I was thinking of grabbing from him but didn’t know if they would be enough. I am planning to run 6lbs and a very safe tune. I don’t need gobs of power but would enjoy the added instant torque.

I wish I bought that car all those years ago, oh well.
If you’re planning heads and cam I’d go with 36 just to be safe, IMO 24s would be right at the limit, if not over the limit. Even with a stock long block I’d bet those 19s were maxed out.

I've got a dart block, lightweight internals/flywheel/clutch and am thinking 10-12 psi, and megasquirt
Similar to what I did when I added the turbo. Tossed the Mass air and bought a Megasquirt 2 plug and play. Running it in speed density, and just entered my 60lb injectors into the software and let it calculate the new fuel map required. Works great, full fueling control and timing under boost. The Autotune feature works fantastic, my '86 never drove so well with a mass-air conversion naturally aspirated. No chip, no retune with a tuner for every change. Still learning the system but getting there, lots of control.

MS3 is a great choice, not much it can't do. I hate wiring which was one of my reasons for the plug and play version of the MS2. I'm sure I could have built my own and got it functioning, but didn't want the downtime or chance of screwing it up LOL! It's complicated, yet fairly straightforward at the same time...if that makes any sense. My biggest hurdle is getting a steady low idle speed, which may be the cam and the ancient idle air control motor I'm dealing with. Driveability is fantastic even with the batch fire fueling, no complaints there at all. Boost tuning has gone well, some street tuning and a few track visits got me pretty close, and I haven't really touched the timing tables yet. I'm pulling huge amounts under light boost.
I've got a MS 3 and am just starting on pulling apart the harness and wiring it in. Definitely not my strong suit. My plan is sequential injection and sequential spark.
I am also converting my Windsor 302 to coil over plug.
I have a second iron motor with small powerdyne slated for my 88 that i was planing to convert to EDIS. That may go on hold depending on potential structural issues with my 88.

I will likely go that route next year.
For the time being would I be able to run the car essentially stock with the blower at low boost?

Here is my recipe lol.Sct 2600 mass air, sct chip, b-cam ,255lph fuel pump 44 # injectors ,tfs heads, gt 40 tubular intake on a 92 block ,10 pounds boost on a safe tune car made 483 hp 447 torque.

Probably the best choice. If you factor in things like a chip and tune. The megasquirt is a no brainer. Also the price guys are asking for A9L the megasquirt is a better choice.

Does anyone know if there is a table to figure out boost from pulley size?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ponyryd

You can estimate any boost level with the following formula:
((Crank pulley diameter/blower pulley diameter*blower displacement/(engine displacement/2)*14.7) - 14.7)*Volumetric efficiency
Volumeteric efficiency is about 90% typically
Example: 5L motor with a 1.5L blower, 6.5" crank pulley and 2.62" (2 5/8) blower pulley
((6.5/2.62)*(1.5/2.5)*14.7-14.7)*0.9 = boost in psi
boost = 6.46 psi
same motor and pullies with a 2.2L blower:
((6.5/2.62)*(2.2/2.5)*14.7-14.7)*0.9 = boost in psi
boost = 15.65 psi.

Awesome. So with my current 2.5” blower pulley and my 6.75” crank pulley I would be making roughly 18lbs Of boost. :s I think I’ll be buying an underdrive crank pulley

I'd go the other route and up-size the blower pulley. Reducing the belt contact area on the crank pulley and a small blower pulley can get into potential belt slippage territory. Keep the stock crank pulley and throw a bigger blower pulley on and that'll help maintain the largest area of surface contact for the belt on both pulleys. That should relieve some stress on the belt and give you a good chance at not seeing much belt slippage under load.

^This is the best option as long as you have adequate hood clearance to clear the larger pulley.

Tuners absolutely have a handle on tuning them these days. Add an SCT MAF n your all set.

Well fellas, it looks like i am going to end up with a set of ported GT40 heads with 1.7 roller rockers. cam decision has yet to be cemented currently deciding between a TFS stage 1, Conor cams xe270hr, and steeda #19. Blowzilla will be going on with 42lb injectors. Should feel like a totally different animal.
Had made a deal on a set of tfs tw heads with 1.6 rr but while my wife was sick in the hospital the deal went south.

That's where I got mine from a few years back. www.efianalytics.com has some info on the Tunerstudio software to look at as well. Tech support has been great, I'm still not dialed in 100% but my junk hasn't left the garage much in the past few years to get it sorted. Other than some idle tuning still to deal with, part throttle and power runs are performing well. Just keep everything conservative at first and sneak up into it. Some of the autotune targets are a bit aggressive for my liking, but they are easily tweaked if you opt to use that feature.

Turns out the lower intake that cane with the Kenne Bell supercharger I bought is from an explorer and not a true gt40 or cobra lower intake. Normally I wouldn’t care but with the explorer intakes apparently they move the supercharger forward 1/8” which causes pulley alignment and belt throwing issues. Dang

I haven’t installed it yet, but I have been doing a lot of research and everything I have read, even from Kenne Bell says I can’t use the explorer intake. It’s only 1/8” so it would be difficult to notice unless it was causing belt alignment or another issue.

Internet can be full of a lot of hear-say and just plan bullshit. Most have no friggen clue even the so called pros tuners.....that’s a different rant.
but that being said, the intake cost is minor and you could probably sell it for a couple of bucks anyways. I have always been a fan of the aftermarket intakes over stock.
Welcome to the world of mod’n cars, if this is your only hiccup along the way then consider yourself lucky.
