GPS units...

It's been almost ten years since I purchased my First and only GPS unit and I know nothing about the current offerings. What are you running? What features should I look for, avoid? Any information would be appreciated.

I only have experience with Garmin and would replace the current units (2 of them) with updated versions when the time comes. One is 10 years old and the other is about 6 years old I think. The newer one has lifetime maps and traffic so unless it stops working I have no reason to replace or upgrade it. I didn't get it with Bluetooth (for phone calls, etc) but most cars have that now. I still think it's more flexible that the built-in units in the Cadillac and Volvo.

I have a recent garmin that I got off kijiji and it has lifetime maps same as 92redragtop's unit That is a feature that I would recommend.

Dedicated GPS I suggest Garmin.
Another idea, good mount and use your cell with Waze. Maps are always updated, live traffic, accident updates etc.

This unit will be for the Mrs. The simpler the better.

I also recommend Garmin. I have it in my other car as well. It just so much better to use. If you want free then Waze is amazing and the only other way to go.

I’m still using my old Garmin, but when it dies i’ll just use my phone. Dedicated GPS is as redundant now as point/shoot camera. Both replaced by the cell phone.

But would the use of a cell phone draw the attention of the distracted driving patrol?

No, I don't believe so. Just have it in a mount and don't program it while driving. Same rules as a dedicated GPS.

I have Waze but it uses data so I use the Garmin instead - plus I find it easier to search along car/route/destination for any number of POIs available via the Garmin that I find it harder to do in Waze without taking your attention off the road for longer. Plus with free North American maps I just download the map for where I'm going (like Western US) and take the Garmin with me (without the need to have data roaming on all the time in the US. Took it to Europe also.

Just reserved a Garmin Dashcam 35 as a Christmas gift for my dad. Decent sale price at Best Buy for $139.99. Only thing is that it does not record sound.
