Spy photographers have caught confirmation that at least some versions of the next-generation Ram 1500 pickup will have a new dual-function tailgate (https://www.allpar.com/news/2014/06/ram-reinvents-the-tailgate-25270), capable of both dropping down in the traditional manner or opening up 'French door' style.
The tailgate design makes it easier for consumers to access the pickup's bed, without having to reach over the dropped tailgate or climb up on it. Earlier spy photos confirmed that the next-generation Ram 1500's tailgate can be dropped remotely using a button on the key fob (http://www.autonews.com/article/20171031/OEM03/171039924/2019-ram-1500-touch-screen-power-tailgate-detroit-auto-show).
FCA US plans to begin production of the next-generation Ram 1500 (http://www.autonews.com/article/20171016/OEM04/171019713/fiat-chryslers-ram-sports-new-face-for-2019) in January at a retooled assembly plant in Sterling Heights, Mich., and will introduce the redesigned half-ton at the 2018 Detroit auto show.

Interesting idea. Not really pleasing to the eye tho with that big line down the tailgate.

Came away thinking the same. Guess it would be handy when you need to reach further in and not have the gate to content with.

With more and more families purchasing trucks as the family haulers, I can see how this idea would be more appealing than using the step bumper for some.

Absolutely.

Wonder why they would split it and not just have the whole thing swing open.

It’s like all these stupid new fridges with the door inside the door. And three different ways to get into the same spot. In the end it just equals more parts to break.

I was thinking the same. But I guess it's to save weight on the door, and save on the door swing radius especially when parked in a parking lot or on the street.

More and more info on the new 1500 makes me think I'm for sure going 2500 next.

where did they get an idea like that?

oh right, Honda "not-a-real-truck" Ridgeline.

Forget about the stupid French door. Give me a sliding bed....that makes it easier to load and unload. Want it fancy, make it hydraulic or electric....

Yeah Parkin lot swing makes sense.

Should do a fancy gate that tucks underneath. Like the ... the old bmw concept on the front doors?????

I was never a fan of the humongous grille on Dodge Rams, but it was distinctive. The picture above could just as easily be a Chevy or GMC. So much for brand identity.

The swing out tailgate seems like a good idea, even if copied from other manufacturers and class of vehicles.

Great. I bet those will never fail, or rattle, or fit poorly, or.........

Not big on the front, looks like a Chevy big time.

Definitely looks like a chevy, the current ram front end is just bad ass.. why make it look like every other truck? :(

I quite like that new front end. I dont think its a final version in that pic. Ive read that the new grill will have the crosshairs similar to the old style

I can see the two parts of that tailgate never lining up properly. I appreciate that they challenged themselves to change up the look but as others have said it looks very Chev like.

Thats not a bad thing imo....the new gm trucks look amazing. Was the first time in a long time gm produced something id own. Ford is 3rd on my list of trucks i like..they look frowny or something...not my cup of tea AT ALL

Agree on the Fords, to be they don’t look tough at all, they look soft. Although they’re the best-selling truck so what do I know, lol.
Also I hope it’s not the final version, but I’d bet it is. I’m not feeling the front styling at all, looks weak, also I can appreciate the innovation on the tailgate, but I don’t see it being that durable.

Well it’s not the abomination that the chev is.

The black package is actually pretty sleek looking but whoever decided on the giant ugly 1500 badges on the hood needs to be fired.

Yes that black “Laramie Sport” is kind of nice.

I like it a lot. Once again Dodge makes the best looking pickup. Nice to see they have started to take towing seriously. Over 12,000 lbs towing is finally competitive with Ford and Chevy.

Wow it looks a lot better in that video, the black one looks killer, very sinister. I’m not sure how I feel about the mild hybrid, but I guess if it works I’m on board. Tons of cool features on this new truck, really amazing the tech they’re adding.

Well it’s not the abomination that the chev is.

I have to agree with that statement.

It is definitely a lot nicer truck than it has been in the past. Will be interested to see how it does in real world towing. That iPad looking screen in the center console is crazy!

It pains me to say this but id go Chevy. Dodge REALLY buggered that up imo
