View Full Version : Auto vs stick

My plan is to trade my current ride for an '18 Mustang. I've looked at Audi SR 5's, Mercedes c-43 AMG, and Jag F-type. Prices are pretty high, and although I could stretch, it just seems 80ooo+ is a bit much for a car. Heaven forbid getting a Camaro (or even worse a BMW), and my dream car (an Aston Martin), is totally out of my reach. So, Mustang it is.
Question is, auto or stick. I have been driving a gearshift for 51 years, but next week I'm 67, and my patience in traffic is starting to wear thin. Unfortunately, I have to be out there all year as I'm a contractor. I do on average 1200 km a week. It seems I can no longer go anywhere, at any time of day, without encountering some kind of traffic jam.
I'm inclined to stay with a manual, but that new 10 speed auto has it's virtues.
Just curious what other people would do.

I always lean towards manual teanmssion, even in traffic it helps me keep my sanity! I enjoy the feeling of being connected to the vehicle as well

I would tend to agree... As all my vehicles have been and are stick, except my wife's SUV. But doing 1200kms a week not even factoring in age. I think Automatic would be the best option. When ever the OP gets the manual bug, he can always use the manual mode to get his kicks.

I'm doing the same although I have another mustangs that is stick as the toy. I tried the stick on the 17s and decided auto, the 10 speed is a bonus

For a daily driver I go with auto to save my knees and patience in GTA traffic. The Geartronic 6-speed auto (can switch to "manual" mode if needed) on the 2006 Volvo R I currently drive is enough for me to have fun with given the upgraded combo of other features on the car (turbo/power, torque, suspension settings, AWD, etc).

Another vote for auto.
That’s a lot of km weekly.

Few bolt ons and tune and done.

Wish I could. Insurance, reliability are issues with any mods. The car is my daily driver and absolute dependability is paramount. Besides, an automatic 5 litre '18 supposedly will hit 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Seems reasonably quick to me.
Not to mentio nthe extra 40-50 bucks a week for high octane gas.

Auto for traffic, audio books for sanity

Yup, podcasts for me.

why don't you try driving each and see how you like it.
I drove a '17 SS Camaro across Tennessee for 5 days and it was awesome with the 8 speed auto connected to the 6.2 l DI motor. For a DD there is zero choice involved IMO, but it's all about you.

Daily driver, whatever “auto” floats your boat.

Reliability shouldn't be an issue with a tune. I have 86,000 km on my 2014 and 85,000 on the 94 octane tune lol. The added cost in fuel is what will kill ya. However it runs real nice on my 91 V-Power tune. That tune also gets 9L-100km.

Seems you drive almost as much as me. I've seen under 10 l/100 km on the mustang a few times, but only on long highway runs with cruise on and speeds under 120.
At 1000 km plus a week thats 2 1/2 tanks of gas. An extra 25 cents a litre is another 102-150.00/month, so that's another reason for keeping it stock. I run on 87 octane all the time.

My old 04 Cobra was run only on 94, but gas was cheaper then and at the time I was doing less kilometre-age.(there's a good word for you)

The new 10 speed auto is insanely quick at the shifts and being able to go into manual mode is a big plus. I'd go auto for sure. Manual would get tiring after a while. I did the same move as you when I decided to sell my SRT Challenger.

Once more into the breach. I'm 67 tomorrow. I still feel like i'm 17 when I drive my Mustang, and it continues to be a thrill every single time when I fire up those Magnaflows in the morning, so the next one will still be a stick. The one after that, a '20 or '21 will likely be a slushbox.
Somehow, I just CANNOT imagine myself driving a 4 door sedan or SUV. I might be getting old and decrepit, but I NEED a ragtop, and I NEED at least 400 horsepower. What else is out there other than a Camaro, and I would NEVER buy a Chebby!

I love the feeling of rowing gears in a good precise manual, however as life becomes more and more chaotic and murky I am confident my next toy will have some form of automatic, preferable a good dual clutch with paddle option, but something that can be put in roncomatic set it and forget it mode for those times as well.

New auto's are so good now, it's not like the old massive power robbing "slushboxes" of old.

My use of the term "slushbox" just shows how old I am. My God!! I'm gonna be 67!!! Wherever did the time go? I'm not done yet!
Would you believe I was 48 when I bought my first Mustang? Seems like yesterday.

I absolutely love the my auto. Regular mode, sport mode, sport+ with paddle shifters... It can be many things and it's always a lot of fun. I've done lots of track days and a few dragstrip runs - 12.87 being my best - completely stock drive-train, full weight convertible. I still love a great manual transmission, but these newer autos are not like the ones from years past.

If I was in the market for another Mustang I would go Auto. I have been daily driving my current 15 for about 19 month now and even though my commute is very short I am sick of rowing grears (most of the time)
