Several of the mfgs use a similar design n should likely be included in the suit. Seems ridiculous they could screw up something so simple. I thought the whole design had been abandoned after GM took a stint using them way way way back when.

Hundreds of Ford owners are suing the automaker over allegedly defective lug nuts.
The suit, which seeks class-action status, claims the lug nuts on millions of Ford Fusion, Escape, Flex, Focus, F-150 and F-350 vehicles can swell and delaminate, making it difficult to remove the wheels without paying for repairs and new lug nuts.
Law firm Hagens Berman filed the complaint Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan on behalf of the affected owners.
"We're not talking about breakthrough technology or computerized aspects of the auto world," Steve Berman, managing partner of Hagens Berman, said in a statement. "We're talking about possibly the simplest part of the car -- the lug nuts. Ford chose to make its lug nuts with an inferior design that puts cosmetics ahead of safety and directly led to harm to consumers."
The two-part lug nuts have a steel core with a chrome, aluminum or stainless steel cap.
"At best this defect leads to consumers paying more than $30 per wheel at a repair shop just to get their tire off, and then have to buy new lug nuts," Berman said. "At worst, Ford owners could quickly end up in an emergency situation on a busy roadway, stranded with a flat tire and no way to change it."
So far, Ford owners from Arizona, California, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia have signed on to the suit. The amount of money they are seeking varies individually depending on the out-of-pocket loss and value of the vehicle, the law firm said.
Ford, in a statement, said it cannot comment on pending litigation.

Can't begin to add up the number of broken sockets n wasted time those things have caused us over the years only to see them make a comeback.

I couldn't believe a $50,000 car comes with such shit lugs. I mean put $50 into the price and put some decent lugs on it already. All the RS guys would have paid it. Its probably the first thing most RS guys change. Jay and I found out the hard way. The factory or dealer rounded 2 of mine. As you said socket and hammer time. Such a PITA!!!

Just tossed the original set off my wife's 2014 in the trash. Had enough of hammering sockets on and off. Took less than a year from the car was new for them to start getting bad.

Seen it plenty of times, never on a 2-year old car though, that's pathetic. The FCA ones seem to get at least 5 years before swelling, but I see their point though, the solid chrome ones rust often being scratched by sockets, so maybe this was their fix? Honestly I prefer the old Gm ones that were open-ended with a black or grey plastic cap, looked good and always came off.

On the other side of the coin my 09 F150 with 173,000 kms has those lugs on it and they are all perfect.. Go figure. Always winter driven too.

I had 2 rounded right from the factory. Assuming the impact missed and was forced on. I couldn't change them out fast enough after wasting an hour on 2 of them.

^ Try explaining to a customer it took an hour or longer just getting their wheels off.

Wow that is crap. Similar to GM and their shitty ignition key.
