There's a small trap door at the top of the filler neck that opens when you insert the fuel nozzle during filling, but is there another trap door further down the filler neck that prevents fuel from coming back up? Like a check valve?

Reason I ask is I tried filling the tank last night and I could only get a couple of litres into it before the pump would shut off. I tried a different pump, same thing. If I tried trickling fuel in it would spill over. Fuel tank is empty.

Could also be clogged vents to the tank. I know there's an anti siphon filter or something down there but not sure about a trap door.

maybe vent solenoid?

Pic is of '99 up, where it tapers at the end there is a spring loaded / floating plug (or cork) of sorts that can get jammed in the closed position. Not sure if it's similar in a '95 or not.

I was trying to find a pic online.

Can't it be dislodged by just jamming something down it's throat? Or do you have to take the filler neck out?

I'd try pushing down gently, if you can fish something like a brake line or similar in there.

S197s have this issue as well, I find it helps if I hold the handle upside-down, looks odd but works

This used to happen on my '05 all the time. It was so annoying. I would just have to feather the pump the whole time while it filled up, constantly clicking off like it was full. I wouldn't even know when it was full, I had to just guess before it over flowed.

In the picture above, the last little smaller diameter bit sticking out the end contains a check valve. I dropped the tank (always fun) and inspected it. Looked fine, but maybe dropping the tank and pulling the filler spout freed it?

It's either that or tank not venting properly Don.

I just put 16L in it, it seemed to fill fine. Now that I know what's inside the filler spout I'll know to just jamb something down there to pop opened that valve.

All the vent valves and EVAP components were replaced last year or the year before.

Bet valve was jammed then.
