A bear has been spotted wandering around Scarborough’s Malvern neighbourhood late Friday, sparking a police search to ensure the animal's safety.
Residents reported the bear along Tapscott Road between Steeles and Finch avenues at 10:30 p.m.
Earlier, one person said they saw it near the Toronto Zoo. Zoo officials told CP24 all their bears are accounted for.
It's not clear what kind of bear is on the loose -- whether it's a black or brown bear.
Toronto police are reminding people to not approach the animal.
Residents are advised to secure their garbage and composts in case it is foraging for food, the Ministry of Natural Resources said in a Tweet.
Officers have launched a bear hunt in the area.
Why does this continue to happen? We have no one in this entire province we can bring in to better deal with the situation vs killing it?
Toronto police shot and killed a bear after it roamed through a residential area of Scarborough late Friday night.
A spokesperson for Toronto Police Service's 42 Division said Emergency Task Force members were deployed to a neighbourhood in northeast Toronto after multiple bear sightings were reported.
The police official said the animal, which according to unconfirmed eyewitness reports was an adult black bear, was rummaging through backyards, and at one point banged on the door of a residence.

He said ETF officers shot the bear in the Middlefield Road and McCowan Road area after animal control officials advised police that they were not equipped to deal with the potentially dangerous situation.
"The bear has been seized and is no longer at large," police said in a tweet.
Police began tweeting about sightings of the bear in the Tapscott Road and Finch Avenue East area at about 10:30 p.m. and launched a bear hunt shortly thereafter.

Police had no immediate information about where the bear came from, its gender, or whether a post-mortem examination would be performed to try to determine if it was suffering from any abnormalities.
Members of the public had been warned to stay away from the area and not to approach the animal.
The Toronto Zoo, which is located less than four kilometres from where the animal is alleged to have been seen, had informed police that they were not missing any bears.

That's the first thing I thought too lol. The zoo released a statement assuring the public that all of their bears were accounted for.
