It has lots of evidence that it is the real deal (markings from things they needed to do during filming). Bit of a shame that it was undergoing a restoration into an Elanore clone of all things (geebus, get your movies straight) when they checked the VIN with Kevin Marti. I LOVE the movie and all the lore that goes with these cars (even nearly bought a 2001 Bullitt years ago and got to drive the first 2008 to come to Canada before they were available for sale) but I am not sure if I'd rather this car was left alone as a scrap heap the way it was found or if I'd rather it be restored back to the way it was. But it is cool either way that it was found an no longer a mystery.

Ya, from what I've deduced from the varying 400 articles is its real but now theyre futzing with it to make it nice (not an Eleanor clone anymore, almost a Bullitt clone not clone) I feel the fact some rando shop somewhere in Mexicali is "Restoring it" has killed the value pretty hard. Would have been way cooler and way more dollars/pesos if it had been a survivor.

That said the 01 Bullitt and any Highland Green 68 FB is still major boner jams to me.

The beat-up Mustang took its trip to the junk yard alongside both Chargers used in the scene, according to the IMDb records. But from there, its trail was lost.
The new-found treasure, disguised under white body paint and not the Highland Green that “Bullitt” fans will recognize, was first uncovered last year in Baja California Sur by a novice collector named Hugo Sanchez. He reportedly wanted a rough Mustang to rework into an “Eleanor” Shelby GT500 from a much-later movie, 2000’s “Gone in 60 Seconds.” Paint removal eventually revealed the green and inspired a closer check of the car’s provenance.
“It’s not the first time one of these old movie cars showed up in a junk yard, but it’s rare,” Marti told Fox News. Because of his classic-car company, Marti was familiar with the vehicle identification numbers (VINs) for the two Mustangs ordered by Warner Bros. Car sites were hesitant to guess at the Mustang’s potential value given the movie affiliation and because it had been missing for so long. An original Charger from the scene went on sale in 2013, restored, with a price tag of $1 million.
Fox reported that the owner is now taking his Mustang to California for restoration ahead of the film’s 50th anniversary.

I heard it was a DeSoto from the movie "You've Never Heard of It" (1956) and that it was owned by Bob McBean (not Steve McQueen), whom you've also probably haven't heard of.


That could just be rumor/speculation tho.
